Servant of the Lake is the same kind of horror as this, to me. The horror in this game isn't about the lake. It isn't about the bone-chilling realization that something very bad and supernatural is going to happen. It isn't the cult, or the brain-melting blend of metaphors and in-universe reality, or even the jumpscares of Alexandra in her mask. And, while it is admittedly terrifying, it isn't even The Night Watch section that's the horror in this game.

It's Kate hiding under the stairs and crying when William is angry. It's the fact that her brother was very likely raped and is being held prisoner at least a year later. It's everyone saying they're surprised you're still around, because they're really saying they're surprised you're still ALIVE. It's Kate not being surprised at the blood DRIPPING THROUGH THE CEILING and that she immediately thinks it's from a person. It's that, for Kate to be so unsurprised at the blood and assume it's a dead body in the attic, Aldous has to either be extremely cruel and frequently kill his servants, or care about them so little that he doesn't care when they go missing during family reunions, or both. It's that when William is angry, he destroys depictions of his family and items in the servant area and that's it. It's that, by virtue of the way puzzle games work, the player does not have a single choice but to go along with these untrustworthy people, to put the mushroom in the soup, to give Aldous the book, to give him and William their guns, but it's that Harvey doesn't either, because they could kill him, and nobody would find them responsible.

over and over again

and in the end

it did matter

you sacrificed your legacy
