Classic BASSSSSSS
Hey guys we are psyched about Psychic Mirror's free show at Blackbird Oridinary! Their music is sexy and groovy and I haven't seen them live yet! Can't wait.Â
It's the kick-off party for the Heineken Transatlantic Music Festival. This fest is unique in Miami because its run by the Rhythm Foundation. The Miami Beach-based non-profit has cemented itself in Miami as a tastemaker, booking eclectic world music artists solidly throughout the year and this fest is the annual celebration of that legacy.
The coolest part about this fest is that they book amazing local acts. Psychic Mirrors, The Hongs, Krisp, DJ Pauer and Beatmachines are all playing alongside the invited artists.
Fun trivia fact: Beatmachines is the sister band of Afrobeta :)Â Here are my picks for this weekend:
Thursday - Psychic Mirrors at Blackbird Ordinary 9 PM
Friday - The Hongs at the North Miami Beach Bandshell 7 PM
Saturday - Krisp at the Bandshell 7 PM
Sunday - BBQ at Gramps with Dj Pauer and Beatmachines 4 PM aka Jimbo's Birthday Bash! (who's Jimbo you ask? click here )
Check the Rhythm Foundation site for the full lineup and set times.Â
Here's the full Hongs EP to get you warmed up!

Afrobeta at SXSW!
Hey all! We are so excited to be heading to SXSW for our first time on Wed, March 13th. We will be playing two official showcases during the week. One on Wednesday and one on Friday!
Keep in touch if you around in Austin this week!Â
if i can make my mind up, i will use this as a sticker. It’s loosely based on season 5 of Breaking Bad.
Virginia Key Grassroots Festival x Afrobeta
Have you ever been to the Virginia Key Grassroots Fest?
We haven't.Â
It starts tonight! At 7 pm!
Don't feel too out of the loop because it's only in its second iteration in Miami. Apparently the fest has a storied history, it began two decades ago as a way to raise money for AIDS awareness in Trumansburg, N.Y. Â
Fun trivia fact: It was founded by veteran folk band Donna and the Buffalo.
The lineup at the fest has usually been geared toward the crunchy granola set but that set it is a-changin! Deep groove supporter and production company Moksha Family Arts Collective is hosting a stage next to the main stage this year. Which means all of our friends and our slutty sister band, Beatmachines will be playing (set time is Friday night at 12:30 am). Keep your eye on this stage for the greatest local electronic acts you've never heard of.
Meanwhile on the other 3 stages our friends, Elastic Bond, the Cornerstoners, Art Official, Nag Champayons, Suenalo, Locos Por Juana and Spam All-Stars will be playing among fest founders Donna and the Buffalo, reggae classic hit-writers Inner Circle and southern faves Stokeswood.Â
I was also psyched to see WMC founder DJ Bill Kelly on the lineup.Â
There will also by a myriad of workshops on everything from dance, music and sustainability. If you've ever thought about how to make your little piece of Miami greener, our friends at 305 Green and Ready-to-grow gardens (who recently planted an edible garden in our yard, watch it here) will be doling out tips!
We gotta get there at some point to setup camp today…so we better get our stuff together! Don't just hear about it-be about it.Â
Stay tuned for the re-cap next week. Hope to see ya in the key!
See the schedule.
I've always wanted to grow my own food. My research online led me toward protecting your plants from frost. I couldn't find info tailored to our tropical climate. So i added one more word to my search: Miami.Â
The first name that came up was Ready-to-grow gardens. I emailed and Dylan from Ready to Grow called and arranged to come over the next day. He consulted me regarding what I wanted to grow and what would be the best way to go about it.Â
I had my heart set on sweet potatoes but he advised we should start small because sweet potatoes overgrow a yard quickly. We decided on a 4x8ft raised bed garden. The wood for the frame is salvaged from a miami dock. All the soil for our garden is locally composted earth.
We chose a mix of veggies and herbs, like spinach, kale, swiss chard and tomatoes, about 15 diff varieties in total. They even installed an irrigation system so our garden won't wilt away when we travel or sleep in or both.Â
It's been amazing watching it grow day by day.Â
To get your own go to Ready-to-Grow ;)
