Aeyus Personnel Logs

Greetings and salutations, Andromeda citizens! As of this week, the new site on Eos has been established! Though not a full colony in itself, the new location - colloquially known as Aeyus by the residents - will help further our foothold on the planet as well as provide other settlements and the Nexus with much needed supplies to continue with ongoing projects and repairs.

Some of you have shown interest in contacting the residents there and after some debate, it has been agreed that a line of communications will be provided to the inquisitive souls wishing to reach out and pick at the minds of our brave pioneers down in Aeyus.

For the safety and convenience of those taking part, the option to submit anonymous requests and questions is available but will be carefully curated to be certain that the line is not being used to hurl abuse at those working hard to provide a future for the Initiative. Personal questions are entirely permitted, within reason, and the staff on the planet are permitted to decline to answer or reply.

I arrived earlier today and met the site supervisor. Most Salarians I’ve met tend to be brief but he is different. He likes to talk a lot and I do not know why. He never says anything profound, just long words.

Never mind Silse, I am just being rude. [Word deleted by user, restored for records: mean.] He meant well and welcomed me on time. I spent most of my day helping move materials for this tower of their. [Sentence deleted by user, restored for records: It looks like it belongs in the poor district of a city.] I don’t like the tower much, but it keeps walking convenient at the best. I wonder why they needed a botanist.

Who knew a new night sky would be so pretty. So alien. It was clear out tonight. Maybe I will sit outside for a while. It would probably be cooler out.

Firstly: water. There’s definitely water underneath us. It wasn’t terribly hard to find and tap into it, but initial readings are dubious at best. It’s not clean to say the least - toxic metallic elements in the water, most likely from some deposits somewhere - as well as some general filth & higher levels of bacteria. If we’re going to start drinking it long term, we’re going to need some sort of water processing.

The second concern is Eos’ latent radiation. Readings are certainly lower than the initial readings taken at Site 1 and Site 2 - as Prodromos has already found - but there’s still some latent radiation around the ‘Aeyus’ site. Inhibitors are keeping the area around us clean and perfectly livable, but I’ll need to scan and potentially treat anyone returning from expeditions. No doubt Teague will be a common visitor.

Let it be know that I am a patient and gracious Salarian. Like many of my species, I remember all things in absolute clarity and, as such, cannot bring myself to lie, even in situations that it might do me harm. Why lie when another Salarian could very easily prove me incorrect and have a reasonable authority to do so?

It is today that my record of being truthful has broken. Our new botanist - someone I requisitioned for the sake of image and potential scientific growth as a side-effect - is a strange sort. Most Turians have quirks, or so I have experienced, and this one is no different. She walks hunched, she is mostly quiet, she tends to not follow standard Turian cultural behaviors, and even acts very informally for both her species and her status. Who have the Nexus sent me? An oddball. Perhaps they had no one of quality to spare?

Comments: Thought it was a little weird we would stack a whole bunch of prefabs in one spot like a tower. I'd think it would be unstable but the site supervisor seems to be very happy with it. Since it was the hand I was dealt, made sure to make the most of it. Might secure a ladder on the top prefab and set up barrier railing around it. Stargazing, sniper nest, I dunno but it could be useful. If we're building upwards, might as well make the most of it.

At the firm insistence of Site Supervisor Silse, a very early (both in the sense that we’re still getting everything set up, and I left at an ungodly hour) reconnaissance patrol was undertaken, surveying the terrain around the Aeyus site. Assessment was made, pertaining to the defensive quality of the area around the site.

Cliff behind the site offers a distinct defensive advantage; attack from above would be difficult, concern only needs to be directed toward potential attacks from north, west, and south. Flat land gives a solid advantage, little cover to hide an advance, and to safeguard an approach. Once any attackers are within firing range, they have a long open charge to clear before they can hope for any cover. Looking to set up defensive siding on all walkways, and emplacements at the base of the stack of prefabs. (Personal Note: Seriously, who’s idea was it to stack them? The tower is defensive but it wasn’t what I expected.)

Doctor Ethlon, writing my first log now that the system is all set up. Not really sure exactly how much detail these can have in them. Could have been useful if they gave us a short seminar on just how they want us to write these, what is allowed in personal logs, what isn’t...probably would have been wasteful.

We're still getting everything set up. Making sense of all the survey data will take a few days. It could take weeks to really know what all these numbers on water and radiation levels are. Hopefully the shielding works. It glows at least, it must be working. 

Hoping to get some good readings of the groundwater before we run out of purified water. It's fine to tell us where to find the water, and give us the tools to tap it, but if I end up finding some kind of disease in it...well, it will be bad. Even adjusting to bacteria cultures some distance away on the same planet can be hard on the body...bacteria alone here, so foreign, will be bad enough without us all catching some ancient disease that fifty years from now researchers will find out wiped out the people that left behind all the strange tech here. Hopefully it’s clear and untainted by dirt, too. Wouldn't want to be drinking foul-tasting water every day.

Supervisor Silse tells me I’ll be working with a Turian. Petrana something or other. Hard not to question the merit of bringing a botanist, no doubt anything here will be entirely toxic to everyone, but I will play nice and at least humour the idea until there's something that is conclusive whether or not it's a feasible effort. Better to involve me than have someone blindly tasting plants to see which ones are lethal. I suppose.

For the posterity and history of those to come and those that will leave us, I am Nukol Silse and I have been assigned to supervise the expansion of our efforts on Eos. Though Prodromos has been successful as an outpost and living area, recent deep crust scans have revealed a particularly promising vein of aluminum deep enough to merit an outpost but not so deep as to dissuade eventual generalization of our residents. The area has been likewise populated by intriguing flora not seen normally around the primary settlement and, given our scientific origins, I have seen it fit to request a botanist to be brought from stasis for some token research. Perhaps it will provide us with a miracle, hardy crop suitable for all species? My doubts, as well as my boundless patience, should be evident enough.

Officially we are Site B, but names were suggested back on the Nexus in hopes of fostering a certain degree of positivity for our new endeavor. Indeed, our new outposts here in Andromeda have supplanted our original attempts and replaced them in history but the memory of past failures still sting, especially for those of us inclined towards memory permanence. I suggested it be named Robur, in honor for the hardiness and resilience our program has shown, but the name pulled from the hat was Aeyus. A human creation no doubt, a guess I hazard thanks to the snickers and smiles it created in the simians, but as it stands I honor the system we selected and such Aeyus has begun its construction.
