I have been contacting local designers about getting some clothes for my dissertation, I have also been looking for a stylist to come and help make each shot look great.

I have now found a stylist who is keen to help me make decisions about clothing and has provided me with a list of designers that she things will potentially provide clothes for free, and that will work within my concept.

I have also had a reply from one interested designers, Lambert’s Yard. Who may be able to provide some clothing for one or several shoots.

FRIDAY 22ND FEBRUARY

I HAVE BOOKED THE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO FOR FEBRUARY 8TH AND FEBRUARY 24TH TO START MY DISSERTATION, WHILST I DONT HAVE A FULL PLAN OF MY WHOLE SERIES I FEEL LIKE HAVING SOME IMAGES WILL HELP ME TO DECIDE TH DIRECTION OF THE SERIES. I AM NOW WORKING ON THE UPCOMING SHOOT, I HAVE TWO MODELS, FIONA AND DEYA WHO WILL HELP ME TO CONDUCT A SMALL SERIES OF IMAGES, I HAVE ALSO BOUGHT SOME ORGANZA AND NET TO USE AS PROPS. OTHER PROPS THAT WILL BE NEEDED ARE SOME FLOWERS AND WHITE BODY PAINT. THIS SHOOT ALSO NEEDS SOME CLOTHING AND A MAKEUP ARTIST WHICH I WILL NOW LOOK FOR WITH THE SHOOT COMING UP IN TWO WEEKS.

HOLY FLOWERS BY PIERRE DEBUSCHERRE

This fashion film, along with its wonderful editing techniques, is about the beauty of the model combined with the beauty of flowers. Flowers play an important part in my dissertation as they are not only iconography for life, but also for death. I thought that these stills in particular were an important reference for the photography project as I could see how they fit in with my ideas about flowers being used as a prop to symbolise something else.

Nosce te Ipsum

I am naming my series noscete ipsum, this translates to know thyself in latin and is an interesting component to the series which relates to death. I want to combine these ideas about death into the belief and enjoyment of life. In the same way memento mori was used in the 16th century to remind soldiers about the importance of life, i use this project to remind myself of the same thing.

I am doing late night drawings for the photo project, trying to think about how my ideas will conceptualise in images. I envision all of these to take place in a studio against a black background. I want to do some on locAtion shoots but i am not sure how it will fit in with this style. More thoughts about this is needed

THEMES OF DEATH IN ART

Ars Morandi - The art of dying, preparing for one’s death

Memento Mori - roman translation to ‘remember you must die’ founded in 1140 but used throughout history particularly between the Renaissance and the Baroque era when art used iconographic symbols such as candles, hour glass, clocks and skulls as an indicator that death is inevitable.

Nosce te Ipsum - translates to ‘know thyself’ found on the mirror of skulls in the Burgkmair painting in 1525

Homo Bulla - translates to ‘man is a bubble’ this iconography explores the notion that the human condition is fragile

Vanities - the latin term derives from the bible meaning fleeting or empty. This word is used to remind the viewer to not be concerned with earthly possessions and more concerned about living a good life to go to heaven when dead.

Physical decay is used in art as a symbol of death being all consuming - iconography from this idea can be seen in withered flowers, rotten fruit, dust, finger prints, insects etc.

Pieta - an iconic tale about the virgin mary crying over her crucified son, depicts tragedy and grieving

Transition - an important theme in paintings of the dead showing their transition to the afterlife, is often depicted through illness, old age or violent death

Body parts - shows intimacy, and leaves the perspective to the viewer

Cremation - placing ashes in urns has been a common practice since the dawn of civilisation

My work stems from fear: fear of the body, of death, of men. I think my nature as an artist is something like feeling hopeless. Works are just temporary shelters and painting is a leisure place where you can conceal yourself.
