Honestly Xie Lian to me is the biggest proof that they are no bad ideas only bad executions because he is pretty much perfect and always right, which isn't usually appealing in a main character and yet he's still a 10/10 character and the blorbo of all time because MXTX is good enough to pull that off

No, but literally so many MXTX characters are the Mary Sues of Mary Sues, but because she writes all her other side characters so realistically, having a protagonist who says, “I think we should all be nice to one another and spread kindness throughout the world.” They get called extremists who ruined people's lives with their radical thinking, which is, you know, so real, like sometimes you say things like I think homeless people should have access to food, shelter, and water, and you will get someone saying so you think rich people should be hanged in the street. Her stories are so good because she writes other people as realistic assholes alongside her deranged, evil villains and perfect protagonists. Like, yeah, Xie Lian is great actually, because it feels like he's suffering for his sins even though he has none. That's honestly like the whole reason he's suffering. These people are assholes.

Xie Lian is the first character in a long long time for me to come in and just blow me away with how amazing and perfect he is. He's sweet and innocent without being boring, because he's also hilarious and sassy and his inner monolog is downright brutal. His kindness and sincerity gets interpreted as weakness by everyone around him and he just doesn't care, because he's literally the strongest bitch in any room he's in and he knows it. He has no shame, so he's always saying the wildest things and it makes him come across as insane, but he's an actual genius. He's so damn smart, he's like batman level detective smart, and everyone (except hua cheng of course) thinks he's this naive baby deer, but he's a cunning ninja street rat with a baby face. He's so well written and he's been thru so many fucked up things that you can't help but feel intensely protective of him. Like yes, he's perfect, and it was a hell of a journey to get to that perfection, he earned it. I'd worship the ground he walks on too, hua cheng is so real for that. He knows ball.
