I made this zine last year to teach Japanese stab binding. It's a technique that every artist should know—with just a few tools, it's so easy to bind your own sketchbook or to make a physical version of your art/writing/etc. Download the PDF version (with bonus photos & tips!)
So it’s been awhile since I’ve bound anything, but when I read the Cursed Amulet Story by @sunderwight, I was like, I gotta make an actual, physical evil amulet now. Except the evil amulet is also going to be a book. And the book is like a diary by the guy trapped in the amulet.
How to make a 16 page small zine !
Doing a little something something , n wanted show you all how to make a 16 page zine (as feel theyre rlly uncommon and underrated)
imo its extremely easy and more interesting engage with as can open them in multiple ways !
All you need is just a piece of paper and scissors (you also dont need scissors if youre confident in doing clean tears) , however you may want glue and some cardstock / cardboard for covers
example of one we made while back , you can open them as book , as 4 spread , or fully unfurl all of it and show all pages at once ! (keep in mind this can only work as single sided , other side doesnt work)
--
Tip here is to fold middle folds first , then fold rest them to line it up with middle line . you dont need measure or ruler at all for this project
for crisp folds we use bone folder , but you can use things like a card (you can of course use your nails but we personally find it uncomfortable)
Easy way remember folding steps is "middle vertical line always goes upwards , and all hinge / horizontal folds go down"
And youre done with all the cutting and creasing steps ! Easy way remember how cut is that the pages basically makes a snake shape
!! if your zine reads right to left , make the cuts instead go "right - left - right" instead of "left - right - left" . think of it as "you want to start and end with it in your reading order"
-
Also , pay attention to the page numbers and where hinge is , theres two options (1st page either being top left or bottom left) you can do and it Does Not change how the zine is cut and folded , just where you personally want the art and order to be
We personally recommend test both number variations to see which one like better as both open and feel different
if yours open right to left instead , the number order is reversed but still works same way
-
If idea of numbering is too complicated , you can instead either number the first or last row "1 2 3 4" , then fold up whole thing into book form , and number it as you flip through it !
its lot faster and easier do if don't want think about technical aspect
Biggest con is that this zine format tend naturally want to puff out or open , so we recommend gluing cardboard or heavy cardstock as covers
We also recommend leaving the zine under some weights (something like under heavy books or other heavy thing) to flatten it
and thats it ! its really that simple :]

How to bookbind your fanfic!
Part 1: From AO3 to printing
The necessary first step is turning your AO3 fanfic into booklets. Your whole book will be a bunch of booklets piled on top of each others and stitched together.
Booklet examples:
Btw, this is the official Word tutorial on how to make a booklet.
You can see there are different options. I usually do 8 pages, which is what you will see in the video. This means that a booklet of 8 pages is two sheets of paper, printed front and back, folded and one put inside the other. To have your word pages in the correct order you will need to format your word document.
Everything is in the video but here is the text for easy reading (btw the fanfic I used is Exit by schwutthing, an amazing Valjean/Javert fic)
Do not download the fanfic on AO3. Click on "Entire work" and copy paste it on word.
Format your word document. Click on File-> Margins. Select "Multiple pages: Book fold" and "Sheets per booklet: 8". Put "Gutter" to 1cm.
Double click on the empty area just above your text, on a random page of the document. This will make the "Do not download the fanfic on AO3.
This will make the "Header and Footer" option appear. You can click on "Footer" and select the format for the pages' number. Always add the pages number, it will make your life easier.
Now you can justify your book. I usually justify (select all text with CTRL+A and click on Justify), but keep in mind that some documents might not enjoy passing through "justify" so double check your final document. For example, if there are lines of poetry and the author wrote into the next line without starting a new paragraph the justify option will make it weird.
Make your book pretty! I added some illustrations and blank pages. I also made the title of the fanfic bigger.
Fix the chapters' titles and notes. I clicked on Home-> Find and searched for "Chapter", so I could select on each chapter title and make it bold, and also delete the "Chapter text" added just after. You can do the same with "notes" in case you want to delete notes.
Now it is time to print! I prefer to save in pdf before, so I will do that.
IF YOU HAVE A PRINTER THAT DOES NOT PRINT BOTH SIDES
Click on print
Select "Microsoft print to pdf"
Select "Manually print on both sides"
This will create two different files pdf, one for the front pages, and one for the back pages.
Click on the file for the front pages and print them all. Do not panic if you see the pages number all over it.
Now take your printed (only on one side) block of pages and load it into your printer again, making sure that you will now print on the blank back. Open your back pages pdf file and print.
(you can do a trial with a few pages to see if everything is lining up correctly).
IF YOU HAVE A PRINTER THAT PRINT BOTH SIDES
"Click on print
Select "Microsoft print to pdf"
Select "Print on one side"
This will create a single pdf that you can print on your both-sides printer. You will see that the page are not in the order you had on the word document, but the whole file will start with page 8 (see video).
Now print!
What you want is this:
You can see that on the front you have page 8 first, page 1 after, because when folded it will end up with page 1 at the start of your booklet! And on the back of this first sheet you have 7 and 2, that will end up in the correct position.
Now you will have a lot of pages... time to fold and create your booklet! Every two sheets... you will fold as you see above.
Next post will be specifically about folding the booklet, making the holes and sewing them together.

it really is quite bad for your military to have an image of itself as a warrior class. what you really want is for your soldiers to think of themselves as boring professionals who will fill out a report form if someone gets a little too warrior ethos out there
Good news: if you’re currently laying around and not producing anything, you are a credit to your species.
It’s recently been found that even hive insects rest. Bees will play with colorful toys. Ants sleep for about 1 minute but they do it so frequently it amounts to a few hours per day. Even trees take breaks.
The only things that work without rest are machines; literally everything that lives requires rest.
EVERYTHING THAT LIVES REQUIRES REST. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING A ROBOT.
robots require very frequent breaks! welding machines generally have it programmed in that they can’t run so long they melt themselves. ive overseen two different manufacturing robots now and each of them were fragile, finicky idiots that require constant maintenance and repair. they pause in between moves, in between jobs. you’re always keeping an eye on programming errors, on coolant levels, on heat. you’re always pulling bits of scrap out of joints, sweeping up debris, washing off nozzles and untangling hoses. and even then it snaps a chain and takes a whole morning’s vacation.
even robots need downtime.

As I mentioned in the previous post, I was completely fed up with GW paints, so I straight up ordered a whole new set of paints from AK and some fresh brushes and actually got back into painting semi regularily.
Switching to new paints took a bit of adjustment and there's still the occasional paint that I need to come up with the perfect replacement for but I really like the results so far and thought, why not share things here for the few peeps that still might be instered in seeing some miniature painting from me :D
I'm pretty happy with the results too and was surprised that I didn't need THAT much of getting back into it, so let's see, maybe I can actually finish this boardgame

know your strengths & the strengths of those around you
We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
Linux is a very good and powerful alternative.
reminder: you cannot Personal Choises your way out of an Intentional Structural Problem
Fun fact! School Chromebooks block Linux. It's not an easy alternative. You are missing the point
