Extremely rare White Auroras like never before spotted in the skies of Alaska last night…
you're right, reader. these images have been faked in some way. there's a neat long exposure trick, and gen-ai, and editing software, etc. but they are art rather than reality.
HOWEVER!! why do we know this? judt because it's surreal and beautiful it must be fake??
NO!!!
It's suspicious because it's white.
(lol)
If you know a little bit about Aurora, you may know yhat they are mostly created by the earths magnetic field shooting particles into the atmosphere near the poles, protecting us from all that radiation. but what happens then?
Particle Plinko.
Space Gun Particles hit the Earth's Defenders Oxygen and Nitrogen, and these bouncers take some of their energy before letting 'em into earth. That energy comes at a cost - they now have to let loose a photon of their own, and it has to be a very specific photon — red or green for Oxygen, blue for Nitrogen. (check this out if you want a much more comprehensive laymans explanation of aurora phenomena, if northern focused, tho tbh idk who this guy is and I've only read through this page)
How is White Aurora possible???
White light is made up of a continuum—multiple colors of light stacked on top of each other. You might notice that the aurora we have consist of RGB light...which can make white light, but only when it overlaps.
These images are sourced from spaceweather.gallery.com. But that's not even the wildest part!! All that energy being released is heating up the air like crazy, which leads to even more interactions, which leads to the possible REAL White Aurora: chemiluminesce. We don't really understand a whole lot about these structures yet, but if you're willing to try and parse this paper I'd definitely recommend trying to learn more :) maybe you can meet STEVE!
The image OP posted doesn't have any color other than a sort of bluish cyan, and maybe a yellow. Very common light colors for us to expect stuff like the sun or a lightbulb mimicing the sun to make, but not much else. There's also something strange about those streaks - it kind of looks more like something is falling out of the sky?
Unsurprisingly, I found this posted all over. Three different facebook groups posted this on Nov 12 2025, one praising a christrain god, one claiming this was a supernatural phenomenon, another posting a broken link to ''see the science behind it''. All had a comment immediately dismissing it. This post appears to be posted a day before the other versions I could find, but I'm not sure if that's tumblr being badly coded or not. It was also circulated to a bunch of polish sites, but I couldn't figure out how to display dates on mobile.
Weirdly, it's been reposted again more recently this past december and january, but some sources are using this similar image, which appears to just be...a worse rendering of it? This looks distinctly ai generated to me, and it's possible someone used op's image to generate another?? Which seems. recursive.
Sometimes questioning why something is rare is fun! And there's no shame in sharing something beautiful just because it's beautiful.
The only reason we understand aurora like we do today is because of people seeing something beautiful and excitedly telling each other about it (on twittr even) :) YOU are discovery. get excited!

Idk why but as a kid I used to get hysterically upset everytime I would imagine a gif of a rotating cow because I could never stop the cow from rotating no matter how hard I tried and I would be crying and no one knew why
This is probably an unnecessary addition, but OCD is missed in cases like these because it's deeply misunderstood by most people.
It's talked about like being obsessively neat or repeating pointless tasks is the main part of it, when really those are just potential symptoms.
The main thing behind OCD is not being about to turn off a thought. There's a thing where most people can just stop thinking about something. If it's over, it's not relevant, it doesn't matter anymore, people can turn their attention away. For OCD, that mechanism can get stuck. And some thought that was supposed to just temporarily pass through your head just stays there. An image of an object rotating. An anxiety about something bad happening. A wish that you made on a dandelion. These are all things that have at some point gotten stuck in my head, sometimes for years at a time.
The compulsions, the rituals, are the person trying to address the thought so it can go away. After all, if you're worried about the door not being locked you can check the lock. But for someone with OCD, that doesn't make the stuck thought go away. So they check it again. And again. And they made a ritual, maybe if I check it exactly five times, I'll know that it's locked and I can let this worry go.
It helps a little. It feels like you're doing something. But it doesn't solve the problem. Actual therapy for OCD involves not doing the compulsion. Instead, you ignore the thought, move around it, try not to give it space in your life. Your mind won't let the thought go normally, so instead you fill yourself with other thoughts. Other parts of your life.
It's not easy at first. Your mind fights you on it. But as you get practice, it gets easier. You learn tricks around your own mind, ways to look at the thought and go, hm. I guess I'll go distract myself now. It does get better. I promise
