Whenever I read academic texts, basically anything before the 2000s and even some after that, when the author refers to an anonymous individual, the pronoun is always “He.” Of course I know that “he” is often used to refer to both men and humankind in general, but it is obvious that the language itself is biased towards men, that the universal meanings and implications the author argues for is oriented towards men as the primary frame of reference — subconsciously, except to those who are not men. I am tired of being forced to envision a humanity whose face is always male, because language is power is authority is history is inequality.
