Played Tombpunk Mausoleum Edition tonight, and it’s true what they say. This game does not like you! It’s also incredibly fun.
Orcine Volans managed to kick in a door, defeat some skeletons, and shed light on a dim and decrepit dungeon. All for the glorious sum of… ONE COIN.
Played The Witch Is Dead tonight and I have thoughts:
1. One page RPGs are so great for one-shots.

This is amazing! And a great introduction to many of my TTRPG recommendation posts. I see you've also run into the same problem I had when I wanted to organize my own recommendation posts! It might be useful to have separate categorization posts by year - especially since I slowed down quite a bit halfway through 2024.

#What about games that are about building a world instead of a story? Is that a thing? I've been trying to play DND with my dad's group again#And it's just so fucking boring#I want to play a game where the goal is to learn about the fun made up world#doesn't matter if it has to be a preexisting world or one that the players make up as they go along either way would be fun#If it HAS to be an adventure I think it would at least be really cool making it some kind of a cartographic expedition#Or some kind of scientific field excursion but like there's cool magic involved#The only problem is i don't think anybody would play it with me but it'd be cool to know if something like that existed

Prev no hiding this in tags! Worldbuilding games are a WHOLE category of their own! From the above posts, try the Map-Making games. A classic worldbuilding game that tons of other games draw inspiration from is Microscope, which has players build a timeline of an area.
Hands down my favorite worldbuilding RPG though is Arium! I've had a blast making super cool worlds with people in this game, and it's broken down into Arium Create, in which you build the world, and Arium Discover which makes it easy to immediately play in the world! I haven't tried Discover, but have had a lot of fun with Create by itself.
Another option is I'm sorry did you say street magic? which is a city-building story game. It's not necessarily a world you can easily play in after without some extra legwork, but a very fun time creating in itself.
These are all just off the top of my head and personal play experience, but there's tons more out there for worldbuilding specific themes/topics. I've got a folder on my computer dedicated solely to worldbuilding games.
hey thank you so much, I've never had anyone understand so well what I was asking for when I described what i wanted to be doing. All of my close friends and family are very dnd-brained so I've been really struggling to find something like this because Ive had a hard time finding the words to ask for it. The last one there looks the most like what I've been kind of longing for, just based on the descriptions, but I'd like to check all of them out. Still have to find people to play with, but I feel extrmely vindicated rn. I wish I was comfortable playing games with strangers online, it'd be so much easier. Also if I end up not liking any of them at least I have a place to start looking for more now too! Thank you so much.

If your friends and family are dnd-brained, I'd suggest Arium Create (by Adept Icarus) as an entry point into worldbuilding games for them. I've found more people grasp it easier than street magic if they're not used to the game type, because Arium encourages them to discuss tropes/settings they like, and common things they'd encounter in D&D like organizations, NPCs, and equipment.
Street Magic asks players to create a city and take turns wandering/creating neighborhoods/landmarks/residents, which creates a living, breathing city, but is a stranger approach to PC-centric D&D heads.
Also now that I'm back at my computer with my PDF library, have some other worldbuilding games you might find interesting! I haven't played most of these, but they were interesting enough to download.
Pocket Worlds by Alex Damaceno / Gnarled Monster- make a hex map world on a d12 polyhedron!
The Land Whispers by Jessica Osborne - a settlement-building game where you discover the secrets of the land as you play! This one might fit closer to your original ask about a cartographic expedition?
There are Other Worlds than These by Nick Bate - a 500 word plane/world-hopping game where you make quick and dirty worlds you travel through.
There's a lot of other worldbuilding games ranging from creating creatures with speculative evolution in Exquisite Biome (also by the Street Magic author, Caro Asercion!) to creation myths in Cosmogony (also by Alex Damaceno) or new religions in fallible god by Mousewife Games (this one even mentions playing well with Microscope or Street Magic!) so you have a lot of options!
