It’s interesting to see Mikasa and Jean on a similar wavelength! I have my minor issues with Mikasa’s scene but I like that both characters address this issue in different ways. Jean by trying to minimize causalities and Mikasa by more or less making sure that Eren is fully aware of what it is he’s doing.

I’m not sure I believe that Mikasa’s stance is what it seems; I don’t think she’s so ignorant she doesn’t believe that some civilians will die and that if they do die then someone did the killing. I just think she’s trying to call attention to the fact that as a person you don’t come back from this. 

Eren’s more than aware that what he is doing is “irredeemable.” As he told Reiner: he understands, now; he is the same. This is something he feels he has to do. And yes, he knows what it means for him as a person–how it’s going to make him feel, later.

What’s really cool is that you can see the stances other characters take on this, too. Sasha’s face when she sees Gabi tells us that she’s a little horrified to see children running around amidst the military targets and Flocke isn’t shy when it comes to sharing his opinion that the enemy is the enemy and they can’t afford to be kind.*

I like that Mikasa and Jean are both taking a more middle-ground stance. Yes, civilians are going to die! It’s war! That happens! But they need to keep the number low. I think for Jean and Mikasa that reason tends toward being moral, but from a political standpoint it makes sense, too. If peace is going to happen, the “enemy” needs to see that there was an effort made to reduce the loss of civilian life.
