The Sound of Music (1965)

Rewatching The Sound of Music as an adult feels like pulling back a curtain on my childhood only now, instead of just dancing nuns and kids yodeling, I’m also staring into the existential abyss. As a kid, it was all about the songs and the twirling. Now? It’s a gut-punch of love, loss, and, oh yeah, figuring out how to outrun Nazis.

Julie Andrews is pure chaos in the best possible way. Her Maria is that rare combo of “messy disaster” and “completely irresistible.” And Christopher Plummer? Let me just say, I get it now, Grandma. The way he stares at her during "Something Good" could melt glaciers. Their chemistry walks the line between romantic tension and "Seriously, just kiss already."

The music is, of course, untouchable. “Do Re Mi” will make you want to drag strangers into an impromptu flash mob, while “Edelweiss” sneaks up on you like a bittersweet goodbye you didn’t know you were about to have.

But here’s the thing: this movie isn’t just a sugar-coated musical. That undercurrent of dread, the creeping rise of the Third Reich, adds this edge that makes every joyful moment feel a little fragile. It’s a reminder that even the most beautiful stories can have shadows hanging over them. And honestly, rewatching it in today’s political climate hit me hard. Seeing the Von Trapps face a society sliding into fascism feels uncomfortably prescient. The way propaganda spreads, the fear of speaking out, the normalization of hate these aren’t relics of the past. They’re warnings we didn’t take seriously enough. The film doesn’t just entertain; it quietly asks us to pay attention.

In the end, The Sound of Music is a forever classic equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking. And yeah, the “So Long, Farewell” earworm is still haunting me.

I kind of wish disney’s ~weird period~ had lasted longer. Like all of a sudden we were getting these films like lilo & stitch and Atlantis and the emperor’s new groove and treasure planet and they were so fun and DIFFERENT. Just thinking about what the pitches for those movies had to have been like is so surreal?? A little blue criminal alien crash lands on a Hawaiian island and gets adopted by two sisters dealing with social services that teach him about the value of family. An Inca emperor gets turned into a llama and john goodman helps him get back to his palace and one of the bad guys talks to squirrels. Treasure island but in SPACE. Like, on the surface, the premise for these films seem so random but they all TOTALLY WORKED IN REALLY GREAT WAYS??? idk I just really miss that early 2000s spark of offbeat creativity in Disney’s timeline.

All these movies came from the Florida studio, which for a long time was a backup animation studio that did work the main Burbank studio didn’t have time for.

Then in 1996 Disney decided to focus all their energy on transitioning to 3D animation. They acquired Pixar and started working on A Bug’s Life.

They basically told the Florida studio (their only remaining full-time 2D animation studio) – “Eeeeeeh, do what you want.”

And the Florida studio, for the first time, got to produce feature films:

Mulan (1998)[27]

Tarzan (1999)[28]

John Henry (2000)[29]

The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)[30]

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)[31]

Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Brother Bear (2003)

Then in 2004 Disney decided to stop producing 2-D feature films altogether. They closed down the Florida studio and laid off all the Florida Studio animators.

Many of whom then got hired by Dreamworks.

Donna/Ten are the only DW pairing I love. I like all of them. But there’s a huge difference between what I feel for the others and the affection I have for Ten/Donna.

I love their friendship in canon. I related to their “none of that nonsense” decree in Partners in Crime.

But I do see something between them. I blame CT and DT for that. Their chemistry is undeniable and they click so beautifully. Had Donna been on for another season, I could see it slowly turning into the Doctor fancying her and she being oblivious, as a reverse of the Doctor/Martha thing.

I agree. It’s a shame that Catherine and David did not stay on for another series. Their chemistry is so perfect, they are so in sync with each other it’s amazing. It broke my heart when she had to leav and the way she had to leave crushed what’s left of it.

Amy’s absolutely right. The whole Doctor/Martha thing could happen to Ten/Donna in reverse. He’d be so confused and clueless as to what to do with his feelings and how to explain to her why he’s been acting all strange (well, stranger) around her.

It’s time for the Doctor to move on from Rose. Their relationship ended when he left her in the parallel universe and while she has a special place in his hearts for her, he needs someone in his life. Donna would be so perfect for that role. She knows when to let him rattle on and when to stop him.

I can go on for days about how much I adore this couple but I won’t. I miss them though.

I think this ship is one of the least appreciated in Doctor who. Because they were best friends and best friends NEVER become lovers. Yeah tell that to the writers of nearly all the romcoms in existence.

I totally feel 10 was madly in love with Donna by the time JE rolled around and that explains why he went absolutely insane when he lost her. He didnt do that with Rose. No he immediately went on to invite Donna with him not even 24 hours later. Not so with Donna.

Try this ship on for size and you MIGHT just find you have a blast with it because the possibilities really ARE endless!
