How I Format and Use Flashcards
1. Ā Less is More: no need for a paragraph to define a term, choose the simplest and most efficient one. Also, donāt include common sense things or things you know by heart, youāll waste time and space by writing them down.
2. Sketch it Out: Sketches can be helpful in allowing you to visualize the term/concept.Ā
3. Say it Out Loud: When reviewing through the cards, try and say the definition out loud. It will require you to think about it more, and it also helps with memorization. If I try and define a term in my head I usually speed through it and leave something out.Ā
4. Write them as you go: Donāt sit down right before finals and try and write down every term/definition from the course. It takes forever and you will kill your hand. As you finish a chapter in the course finish that set of flashcards. You will thank yourself later.Ā
5. Repetition: I go through my flashcards before a test maybe a thousand times (exaggeration but very close). Remember to focus on the harder ones, youāll most likely remember the easier ones during the test.Ā
Here is my method:
Round 1: Go through every single card. Donāt set any aside. I usually donāt know aĀ majority of the terms at this point, I most likely just finished writing them down.
Round 2: Go through every card again, this time setting aside ones I didnāt know or had trouble with.
Round 3: Go through the harder ones I missed.
Round 4: Add the harder ones back in with the original and shuffle.
Round 5: Go through them all and repeatĀ the process until pleased!
11:29 PM // January 9, 2016 | Hereās a āMagicā Trig Hexagon trick I found a while back when I really needed help learning my trig identities! Hopefully this helps you guys memorize them a bit better and add a trick up your sleeve for exams!Ā
How to read scientific papers part 2
Here is the second part, I find this part of reading the most time consuming and challenging, which is why I procrastinate it so much...but well it has to be done. Ā
Materials and methodsĀ
Since this part isnāt really the most relevant, I only copy theĀ ānameā of the method used and what was it used for, that way, if I needed I can see what methid is used for what I need to do and then research the selected method so I can apply it.Ā
Results and discussionĀ
Now this is the real important part, everyhting we just read, understood and summarized comes down to this...what happened once they put allthe theory to work on the lab? Because we have to be able to comprehend and relationate concepts, what I tend to do since Iām a visual learner, is to make charts, maps and diagrams of the info, as well as mark the figures and tables in the article itself. This helps so much to understand how theory relationates with practice.Ā
ConclusionĀ
This one is never very extensive, so I just make a mind map, putting the central idea or hypothesis of the article in the center, and connecting it with other findings or with the procedure they used to find out if it was true or not,
So thank you so much for reading! this methid has been very helpful for me, and I hope some of it works for you and makes it easier for you to understand scientific research, because at least for me, article reading is very tedious and challenging, though I really like it at the end of the day! Happy summer and studying, hope you all are enjoying and making the most of your time.Ā
How to read scientific papers part 1
So, my major challenge when I first went into researh were the research papers I had to read. I used to just read them, without understanding a word of what was said there (seriously), so it was just really tedious to me, not productive at all and I wasnāt learning anything or making the most of my time in the lab since I wasnāt able to apply new concepts properly. But as time passed and I got more experienced, I found and developed a method that works pretty well for me, it helps me analyze and understand so I can later apply what I learned in my own research and time in the lab. It does take more time that just skimming through it, but itās so worthy, trust me. But note that this may not work for everyone, itās just a method I developed by experience (and honestly itās pretty simple and typical) and also learning from others, which happened to be very effective to me.Ā
WHAY YOU WILL NEED
2 highlighters: one for findings in the research you are reading, one for general andĀ āuniversalā concepts mentioned.Ā
Your article
A notebook (try to have one exclusive for the research project youāre doing, if thatās the case, with a section for articles read that can be helpful)
The first thing youāll do is write the title in the notebook, because this will help understand the whole article. The title ususally has the ability to summarize everything in a sentence: itās basically the hypothesis and procedure in one.Ā
Second, weāll work a little with the abstract. Itās a really small summary of everything but it contains the most common abreviations used throughout, so,Ā weāll extract and write them down to have them in handy while we read.
3. Usually the abstract has it too, the hypothesis, we have to find what was done or what was tried to prove with this research.Ā
4. Now, we analyze the introduction, tough simple and general, it can help us understand concepts better so we can later apply them. I like to make maps, charts and diagrams with the info so I can make sure Iām processing it correctly, and if I have any doubts Iāll just look it up!Ā
HIGHLIGHTING
If important information is regarding the research itself, like a result or something like that, Iāll highlight it with one color
If and important concept is mentioned, but itās a universal or general concept, Iāll highlight it using another colorm because it might be useful later, (like what are anthocyanins, or the explanation of a procedure commonly used)Ā
It is indeed and extensive post, so Iāll write the rest later.Ā
Completely new to this studyblr community, I would like to say that @hexaneandheels has been my principal motivation to make this blog! I love how her tips are always useful and practical, that she always creates great and original content and I admire so much that hardworking and productive personality of hers, besides sheās so beautiful!Ā
Thank you so so much! Thatās really sweet of you. Iām glad Iāve had that impact on you!
A little extra info. If youāre writing a persuasive/research paper for an English class or somethingmlike that (where you donāt really need to understand the methodology) you should really start by reading the abstract and the conclusion. Usually thatās all youāll need.
Thank you so much @compsciengineergirl!!! It's true, a different way of tackling the reading tends to be needed according to the subject/area we are studying or working on.
