Even if he hadnât gotten to know Basil as well as he had over the past few weeks, Jack could hear the awkwardness loud and clear in those questions. He was good with people, always had been - one of his many talents was understanding people and reading between the lines of what they were saying to what they actually meant. Now was such a time, and it made him smile.
âIâm alright,â he admitted, staring at his hands for a moment before he looked back out across the room. âIt hasnât been easy - actually, itâs a lot harder than I thought itâd be - but youâve helped me a lot, too, you know. So thank you. You didnât have to do that.â
Basil didnât really know how to respond to that. He didnât often do things for others that they would want to thank him for, so he didnât know what he was supposed to say. âI know I didnât have to. But I wanted to.â Why he had wanted to - well, he couldnât really explain that. Or wouldnât. Either one of those.Â
He decided he didnât want to say anything more about that, so changed the subject. âDo you have a least favourite guard yet?â Basil certainly did, and had ensured that he was that guardâs least favourite prisoner.Â

Random starters: Fainting/unconscious edition
"Wake up... please wake up..."
"Hey, are you okay? You seem a bit faint..."
"N-no no! Stay with me now!"
"Keep breathing, you'll be fine."
"Oh! You're awake! You've been out for so long-!"
"I found you unconscious back there. What happened?"
"Hey, are you alright over there?!"
"We found you in a horrid state.. but we patched you up as best we could!"
"Don't try to move. Just get some rest, okay?"
"Oh, I guess you weren't dead after all."
"Hey! This one finally woke up! Get me a doctor!"
"Shh... take it easy, there's no rush. You were passed out for a long time, you see."
"Ow.. my aching-"
"Ugh... where...?"
"Help me.. someone..."
"I can't hold on... fading away.."
"What happened? Where is this-!"
"Gah! S-stay away from m-me! I don't know who you are!"
"Did.. did you save me back there? Thanks.. I guess."
"I was passed out for that long?!"
"Help me up.. please help me up..."
"What happened to me anyways? I feel so lightheaded..."
"Am I in a hospital? I wasn't here before.."
"Where is everyone? How long was I gone?!"

âSuppose it depends on where you go - most places Iâve been are a bit more comfortable with the shades of grey. Then againâŚ. some places are even worse than this. Guess itâs in their best interest.â
âIn their best interest, yeah. Not ours though.â Basil watched Jack for a moment. âHow...are you? Are you...coping?â It was becoming increasingly obvious that Basil had no idea how to express any care he had for others. He hadnât had a close relationship, platonic or otherwise, the whole time heâd been in here. He wanted to express concern and care for Jack, but he was honestly just guessing at how to do that.Â
simplicity-of-control:
âThat I can use.â Harry said, already hatching a plan. âOne weak link is all we need, and humans are so deliciously superstitious.â He smirked. âI will need to get close to him, allow him to knock me out if needed.â He went on to explain. âBest case scenario I need thirty seconds of uninterrupted eye contact, worst case I can do with a touch.â That was all he needed to plant the seed in the guardâs mind, spark the paranoia and fear into action.
Basil thought for a moment, deciding it would be best not to question Harryâs methods. He was his new best friend, after all, and Basil wanted to keep his friend. âTheyâll only knock you out if itâs less trouble than keeping you awake. Whenever Iâve caused problems by shouting, screaming, kicking the bars, that sort of thing, theyâve just beaten me until Iâve âlearned my lessonâ. They donât like it when you shout because the other prisoners might join in. Eye contact might be an issue, because they have mirrored sunglasses. To make them more anonymous, I assume. But a touch will be easy enough.â
simplicity-of-control:
âIn that case I shall be your new best friend.â Harry said, or more stated as he didnât leave it up for argument. Basil was useful, and heâd be sure to keep the man close for his own benefit. Perhaps even help him get out when he eventually escaped.
âWhich guard is the weakest willed one.â He asked.
âNew best friend,â Basil repeated to himself. Well, that felt strange. He couldnât remember the last time heâd been able to consider another living person a friend.Â
âWhich guard? Well...I wouldnât say any of them are particularly weak willed. Theyâre hired for their ability to carry out orders accurately, and use violence without hesitation or half-heartedness. Theyâre strong. And wonât hesitate to knock you out if youâre causing them a problem. But one of them thinks one of the cells is haunted, and he was involved in denying a sick prisoner treatment, who went on to die here. I think heâs afraid of being haunted by the ghost of that prisoner.âÂ
starryhost:
Well, this was going to be interestingâmost days Al could barely do the whole living thing themselves. They offered a slightly reassuring smile in any case.
âIâŚcould probably help with that. First things firstââ
They rubbed at their arms for a moment.
ââitâs cold. We should, uh, go back inside.â
âIs it?â Basil couldnât tell that it was any colder than he was used to in his cell. Was that bad? It was probably bad, because it meant heâd grown accustomed to being cold constantly.Â
He didnât argue, though. His hesitation wasnât because he didnât want to go inside, but the straight street was suddenly unfamiliar and lacked the corners and turns of the corridors he was used to. Which one was his house again? It wasnât number twelve, because that was his cell number. The other number he was supposed to remember had just sort of disappeared from his mind. So Basil just stood for a moment, not looking at them, hoping some kind of plan would develop.Â

simplicity-of-control:
âSo actually it would be in my best interest not to be seen talking to you at all, is that what youâre saying?â He raised an eyebrow at the other man. âThere hasnât been a prison I have not been able to escape, but no need to make it harder than it has to be by painting a target on my back.â
âYes, thatâs what Iâm saying. But itâs also in your best interest to befriend me, considering I know everything itâs possible for a prisoner to know about this prison. You donât want them to associate you with me, but you want to be on my good side.âÂ
Basil leaned back on his chair, appearing relaxed, but his tone suggested otherwise. âThis prison is probably a little more difficult to navigate than youâre used to. Itâs designed deliberately to confuse everyone in it.â
starryhost:
Okay, they knew that was a really, really stupid question. Al stared at him almost blankly for a second, collecting their thoughts. Well, time to attempt to fix things, and hope they didnât indefinitely make things worse.
âSorry, Iâm sorry, that was dumbâIs there anyway I couldâŚmaybeâŚhelp? At least at the moment?â
âHelp.â Basil repeated, and went silent for a while before he answered. âHelp, yes. With life. I donât know how toâŚlive.âÂ
Of course he literally knew how to survive, but live a life worth living? Well, Basil wouldnât know much about that. Life in prison certainly hadnât been that, and that was all he knew.Â
simplicity-of-control:
âNot much left to corrupt, I assure you.â He chuckled, still looking into the cameras and smirking. Whoever was looking through it would definitely be able to tell he was up to no good. He turned and looked at Basil. âWeâve got to trick Big Brother into thinking weâre not going to do anything then.â
âNo, no, stop...you might not care about those cameras, but Iâve got a reputation that means I have no choice but to care. They know me. Iâve been here long enough. They will come for me.âÂ
starryhost:
Oh, oh no, Al didnât mean to make him start crying. That wasnât goodâHow were they supposed to help him without crossing any boundaries? Their primary comforting attempts almost always involved hugging, or something, and they figured he wouldnât want it.
âUhâŚyouâŚyou okay?â
âOkay?â Basil repeated, turning to look at them. âAm I okay?â There were tears on his cheeks, but his voice remained oddly calm. Right up until the point where he snapped. âNO. I am not and never will be okay.âÂ
simplicity-of-control:
âYouâd think they were holding the worldâs most dangerous criminals in here.â Harry said and smirked. âYouâre sure of it, so you donât actually know if someone is always watching?â He asked and moved his gaze to one of the more visible cameras in the room.
âI donât know for sure, but I canât see how else they couldâve caught me every time Iâve ever done anything. Theyâre quick about it, too. They seem the type to watch constantly, anyway. Regardless of how wrong that is.â Basil cleared his throat. âDonât look. Donât look at the cameras. Or theyâll think weâre plotting something. Iâve got a reputation. Youâre new. Theyâll think Iâm corrupting you.â

simplicity-of-control:
âI will manage it.â Harry said confidently. There wasnât a cell or prison in the universe he couldnât break out of given enough time. This was only a human prison, shouldnât take him that long. âJust point me to all the cameras and the guards schedule and Iâll be out of here in a week.â
âItâs not that easy.â Basil shook his head. âTheir schedule changes every day. Thereâs always someone watching the cameras, Iâm sure of it. And if youâre caught trying to escape...well, you wonât be able to try again for at least another week.â He spoke from experience.Â
starryhost:
Al shrugged and shoved their hands back into their pockets. Their only reason was, well, something theyâd know heâd deny. So they stood silent for a few moments, trying to come up with something else to claim their reason was.
Nothing came to mind, unfortunately, and with a quiet sigh, they just said their actual reason.
âIâŚthought you might want company?â
Basil didnât reply to them. He wasnât sure whether he wanted company or not, really. Heâd always felt lonely in prison, but now that he was out, human interaction frightened him. The only contact heâd had with people in there was either in fights or being pushed around by guards. People were cruel, and his mind held that perception as a defence and a wall. Let nobody in, let nobody close. Basil didnât need anybody. At least, that was what he told himself even as tears came to his eyes.Â
