Latin Witches: Brujos
Latin American countries have always been full of superstitions, magic traditions, and occult and religious societies: from SanterĆa to Palo Mayombe, El Culto a la Santa Muerte, and even remains of Native Shamanism. Latin witches, also called āBrujosā, are famous for their abilities to heal, hex and fortune-telling. They usually work with christian (or Christianized) deities, spirits and prayers. They also see the future in cowrie shells and know how to party and dance like no other witches in the world.

Pura Latina. Pura bruja.
Now Presenting: Brujos
BRUJOS IS A QUEER-OF-COLOR, RADICALLY POLITICIZED WEB SERIES FOLLOWING FOUR GAY LATINO DOCTORAL CANDIDATESāTHAT ARE ALSO WITCHES. THEY NAVIGATE MAGIC, SEXUALITY, AND SURVIVING A WITCH-HUNT LED BY A SECRET SOCIETY OF WHITE HETERONORMATIVE MALE DESCENDENTS OF THE FIRST NEW WORLD COLONIZERS.
Installment 1: The Devil
Episode 1: Aries
Episode 2: Taurus
Episode 3: GeminiĀ
Episode 4: Cancer
TV can be art. TV can be revolutionary. TV can be popular entertainment AND incite critical dialogue. Audiences are hungry and intelligent enough for challenging work. This describes the philosophy behind BRUJOS, a counter-hegehmonic web series. Produced by Open TV (beta), conceived, written and directed by Ricardo Gamboa and to be shot by cinematographer Ben Kolak, BRUJOS is a queer-of-color web series.
BRUJOS blends the Latin American soap opera, American sitcom, and critical theory as it follows a coven of four queer Latino doctoral candidates as they learn magic, indulge in nightlife, navigate intimate relationships, and write seminar papers all while trying to survive a witch-hunt. These young protagonists confront histories and realities of racial and gendered inequality as they battle the secret society of white, heteronormative male descendants of the first New World colonizers behind the witch-hunt. Twelve, seven-minute episodes corresponding to signs of the zodiac cycle have been developed through queer men of color testimony; interviews with actual practitioners of divination and magic, i.e. psychics, santeras, tarot readers, etc.; and with academics of cultural studies, performance studies, and queer theory.
BRUJOS addresses the current the landscape of television: Gay men and people of color are more apparent than ever in mainstream television. Sitcoms like āBlackishā and āFresh Off The Boatā depict families of color attaining the American dream. Programs such as āLookingā and āModern Familyā feature middle and upper class white gay men searching for love or functioning as an all-American family. While these shows are representational achievements, they are not revolutionary ones.
In these cases, ethnic, racial and sexual minorities are portrayed in ways that support dominant culture, narratives, values and relationality. Commercial television studios and networks preoccupied with āscaleā and ābig dataā seldom produce aesthetically or politically challenging work to secure mass viewership. This only further marginalizes non-normative people whoās lives, realities, and stories do not fit within their depictions and who devise new ways of being under the pressures of inequality that are never affirmed.
Moreover, Chicago has become a hotbed for television production. However, series such as Chicago P.D. reiterate stereotypes of people of color as criminals. Mega-hit EMPIRE provides more complex portrayals but itās get-rich-or-die-trying messaging is consistent with popular culture. Too often work that offers alternative images, narratives, and values is not seen as viable by mainstream producers.
For such reasons, Stephanie Jeter moved from big budget television producing to assume a critical and creative approach to television production. Jeterās commitment to working with independent artists led her to BRUJOS. BRUJOS was conceived by Ricardo Gamboa, an award-winning āartivistā committed to creating work outside institutional frameworks. Gamboa began development for BRUJOS in 2014 through informal interviews with queer Latino men and healers and psychics.

āOh I love roses! I try growing them myself, but they never get very far.ā
āWould you like to know the secret to healthy rose bushes,ā I asked, knowing that she would not like the answer.Ā
āDo tell!ā
Grin.Ā āBlood.ā
The customer paused, waiting for me to say that I was kidding. But I wasnāt so it never came. She became nervous.Ā
And before I could explain that blood meal is a common soil fixer and fertilizer, she put her hands up, spun around and said-
āBye.ā
You want to know the secrets to a beautiful garden? You better be prepared for some weird shit.Ā
Well someone felt like being the ominous witch in the small, mysterious shop today.
.
ā¦also, tomatoes like blood too.
My interest in plants extends beyondĀ āoh look a pretty flowerā and straight intoĀ āplants are fucking metal.āĀ
Evidently, youāre supposed to plant garlic in the same places as your roses because the garlic will repel a rose-specific aphid.
So what Iām saying is that between the romantic symbolism of the rose, the bloodmeal in the soil, and the fresh garlic all over the place-
You could really set yourself up for an encounter with some VERY pissed vampires.Ā
Roses really love banana skins, too. Just⦠stick one in there before you plant a rose bush or spronkle around one thatās already inĀ the ground. Theyāll adore you.Ā
Mmm⦠blood banana.Ā
I made tiny ass Home Depot Petunias blossom like magic that theyāre nearly overtaking the trellises.
How did I accomplish this?
Once a week I bury a small amount of leftover meat in the soil.
My morning glories loved the crap out of the charred chicken bones I gave them. Theyāre already an enthusiastic plant, but the blooms I had this year were extraordinary.Ā
Thatās cool as heck. Is this all plants, or just specific plants? Inquiring witches want to know!
See, here weāre getting into soil chemistry, which is an entire doctorate of study and I only know a little bit above the average person.Ā
But the primary reason why bloodmeal is used for rose cultivation is because roses grow best in nitrogen-rich soil. So plants that need a lot of nitrogen in their soil would benefit from blood meal. Others, who do not benefit from high nitrogen, would not fair well. So I would not use it on the entire garden.Ā
Bones/bone meal are used to add phosphorus to the soil, which is why its used as a fertilizer. Generally, most plants benefit from it, but thatās not guaranteed. Crushed eggshells provide the same treatment, with the added bonus of deterring ants.Ā
Coffee grounds will make the soil more acidic.Ā
Ashes of hardwood trees will fix soil if itās been overwatered. I think it serves as another nitrogen fixer, but donāt quote me on that.Ā
Iād have to take a look in one of my books before I say anything else, but thereās tons of materials that double both as soil fixers and offerings.Ā
As a green witch and avid Gardener and plant lover I love all of this so much. All this shit is going in my grimoire.

Life... is hard.
So itās been a while since Iāve been able to catch everyone up on whatās going on in my life - and whatās going on in my practice - so this is me trying to catch yāall up.
To begin, I was sick, like really sick, for a little close to 2 weeks and through that I had to go to school and work (America sucks in this regard). Because of that, when I had free time Iād spend it sleeping, or on this online FB ācovenā Iām a part of. Hence why there were no updates here on tumblr. There were a few things Iām glad to mention that took place while I was dealing with my so called life (yes, that was a reference to an amazing tv show. yāall should watch it. seriously, go watch it).
The first was what I already mentioned: Iām a part of a FBĀ ācovenā where itās basically me and a whole bunch of other amazing witches discussing our craft and our personal paths and seeking advice and sharing tips and tricks with each other. I love it, because it allows me to practice as a solitary witch (and really, I wouldnāt have it any other way), but it still gives me a sense of community. Iāve had a chance to talk with some great witches and thanks to that group, Iām always learning something new!
Second, Mabon took place. (Happy belated Autumn Equinox!!!!!) I was supposed to meet up with some witches for a picnic in Central Park, but one by one they all bailed, so instead I went to the park alone, where I poured some wine at the base of a tree as an offering. I also had a personal moment to reflect on the things I am grateful for (my family, my health, the fact that I have a job, a roof over my head, and food in my tummy). Afterwards, I decided that since I was in Brooklyn I would hop on the L train and head to Enchanted and yāall it was great! I loved it! Got some things for myself and a friend and then went home where I had a small cleansing ritual bath and finished my bottle of wine and ate a few chocolates. It was a great way to spend my day alone and it reminded me that I donāt need others to practice my craft, or to celebrate a day, or to have a good time. (I make great company!)
Third, I have a friend who is about to hold a Santeria ritual so I set it up so that I can go and observe and yāall donāt even know how excited I am about that! Iām dying to learn more about the religion of my ancestors and I canāt wait to partake in this ritual, even if itās just as an observer.
Finally, I already made sure that my work schedule allowed me to leave early on Saturday September 29, because I will FINALLY be going to NYās Pagan Pride Festival! I mean, Iāll be getting the tail end of it, but thatās better than not going at all and yāaaaallll!!!!! I get paid the day before so I hope thereās still some trinkets left because I plan to go on a mini-shopping spree! Lol.
Anyways, this is what Iāve been up to in regards to me and my craft. I had to stop reading books on witchcraft, thanks to work and all the school reading I have to do, but itās good to know that I can fall back on that online coven should I need any questions answered! Thanks to this group, Iām still always learning and I love knowing that thereās a group of amazing individuals who are kind enough to share their knowledge with me.
Everyone who reblogs this will get the name of a deity your blog reminds me of
Iām bored and this seems like fun. Iāll send the name in an ask!
