There's Room for Mercy in Life - My Thoughts on METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty's Prologue
Warning(s) for: spoilers and violent references.
Some people in this world are deserving of an early death. That doesn't mean that I have to be the one to pull the trigger, nor always wish that another person or force of nature will. Leaving conflicts with dirty but non-bloodied hands can keep oppositions at bay long enough to change the conditions that repress their potential to change.
These thoughts of mine cropped up while playing the opening section where Solid Snake infiltrates a Marine tanker to gather intel on a new Metal Gear. What would have been an open-and-shut case for non-lethality against seemingly unarmed Marines suddenly becomes less so as armed Russian forces invade the tanker, killing those Marines in the process. An understandable reaction would be to kill them before they can kill Snake. A justifiable reaction is to bear in mind that these enemies are likely indoctrinated by fascism or knowingly forced to serve a power that will kill them if they disobey. Killing them resolves an immediate problem. Knocking them out or tranquilizing them, on the other hand, may break through the propaganda thrust upon them, inspiring resistance, or prevent unwilling combatants unable to escape fascism from becoming victims of it.
Uncertainty undoubtedly pervades this life-threatening approach to conflict. Hope can get diminished by incapacitated forces recovering, and then promptly returning to patrol. Then again, maintaining the status quo just leads to more of a "kill or be killed" world, so isn't it worthwhile to instead take a risk on a better future?
