the bitcoin collapse is funny and all but i really hope it sticks because the bitcoin industry alone (not even counting other cryptocurrencies) is currently a bigger consumer of electricity than half of the countries in europe. we’re talking a measurable ecological impact just from pretend money that’s created by running massive amounts of meaningless calculations through computers

i know money is inherently absurd in the first place (piece of paper/metal token with arbitrary value etc etc) but cryptocurrencies are the most absurd money of them all. it’s literally pretend money. it’s the emperor’s new clothes. it’s ones and zeros that only mean anything because so many people chose to believe that they meant something, and as that belief fails, so too does the currency. jesus. at least you can still start a fire or wipe your arse with paper money if belief in that fails
