Modified the “QR” from the Revell Halifax to “OF” for 97 Squadron Lancasters.
617 and 619 Squadrons were formed from leading flights of 97 Squadron RAF.
97 Squadron also took part in the historic Augsburg raid in 1942. This was the first and last time the RAF tried using Lancasters at low level in daylight. Having said this, Jonnie Johnson witnessed a Lancaster pilot buzzing the Caen road below 2000 feet on D-Day, such was the air superiority and numbers of escorts.
OF-Z belonged to at least three Lancasters during WW2.
Avro Lancaster I R5497 - shot down on a mission to Neustadt on 1942-12-18
Avro Lancaster III ND739 - shot down. Mission to Normandy Beach 1944-6-6
Avro Lancaster III ME623 - Mission to Brussels from Brussels 1945-5-10
I believe this Lancaster carried an HS2 radar dome in the ventral position.
