Yellowfacing
Iâve recently seen a lot of confusion regarding yellowface. People saying âwhat? Iâm not yellowfacing!â or âItâs not racist, I really love X culture!â so Iâve decided to make this post on it.
"What is yellowface?â
Yellowfacing is any time a non-Asian person changes a physical aspect about themselves in order to try to look Asian*. It doesnât have to involve literally painting your face yellow. Most of the time thatâs not involved at all. It can be as simple as putting on a wig and colored contacts or doing full-blown âgeisha makeupâ. Itâs literally anything done in an attempt to make yourself look Asian. Thereâs also internet yellowface where people pretend to be Asian online.
*Specifically East, South, and Southeast Asian. I see dressing up as Western Asian being put into the category of brownfacing. Please correct me if Iâm wrong here.
"Why is yellowfacing bad?"
I really wish I didnât have to be explaining this in 2015. Yellowfacing is racist as hell because it turns a real life group of people into a costume. It also reduces us to whatever key features someone decides is ~Asian~. If youâve never had to face the hardships specific to the different groups of Asian people, and never will, why should you get to pretend to be us? You can take off the wig and wipe off the makeup. We canât.
Yellowface has also been used historically to exclude Asians from acting roles while still being able to cash in on âexoticnessâ. Asian characters were more often than not played by white people in makeup and prosthetics. You can see this in Breakfast at Tiffanyâs, The Conquerer, The Teahouse of the August Moon, and countless other films and plays. Seriously, there are so fucking many. Yellowface is still being used to this day to give white people Asian roles, notable examples being Cloud Atlas, Ushi Must Marry (a ridiculously racist film to begin with), and a performance of The Mikado in Seattle (also ridiculously racist).
These are all examples of yellowfacing:
(This fucker got surgery look like that)
They are all trying to âlook Asianâ in one way or another. Some examples are more extreme than others, but it is all harmful and gross.
"But I really love [insert Asian country] and this is how I want to show my respect for it!"
No. Thereâs nothing respectful about harming the people of the culture you supposedly love so much.Â
"Iâm just taking ~inspiration~ from the traditional makeup of X culture!"
Why do you have to try to make everything yours somehow? Is it really that difficult to appreciate something youâre not part of from afar? Donât fuck around with aspects of a culture that isnât yours to fuck around with. You wouldnât copy from someone elseâs artwork without permission, would you?
"But my friend from [insert country] said it was okay and they donât mind!"
But do they really think itâs okay or are they just trying to make you happy? Do they have issues with internalized racism? And when it comes to people who live and have grown up in countries where they are the ethnic majority theyâre not going to recognize racism the same way as those who are diasporic will. A Japanese person born, raised, and living in Japan isnât going to be as perceptive to racism as a Japanese-American, for example, because they donât face racism in their everyday life. Also is this person your friend or your excuse to be racist?
"Is it okay to cosplay as an Asian character?"
Yeah, thatâs totally fine to dress up as a fictional character as long as you arenât trying to make yourself âlook Asianâ while doing it. If you want to use makeup to give yourself big, anime-looking eyes though, go right on ahead.Â
"What about gyaru and ulzzang?"
This one really depends. Itâs not bad in and of itself, in my opinion. I see people doing gyaru and ulzzang makeup without being problematic, but I also see a hell of a lot of people doing it as yellowface because their intention is to âlook Asianâ. Iâm usually pretty suspicious of non-Asians who do this kind of makeup because itâs often indicative of them being weeaboos/koreaboos.
So in conclusion, donât fucking yellowface. Donât do it. If youâre not Asian, you donât get to pretend to be. It upholds a long history of racism and makes a mockery of our struggles, cultures, and identities by turning us into a costume. If youâre someone who has done this donât get all stubborn and defensive. Instead: stop, apologize, and learn from your mistake. Itâs not going to magically redeem you of your actions but you can still make yourself a better person.

I love your art style!! Can I ask you a few questions about it? How many years have you been drawing? Is it just a hobby or is it something you do for a living (Because, honestly, you totally could.)? Also could you maybe do a tutorial on how you color your lineart? It's not plain black and I don't know which colors I should use. Or maybe link some tutorials? Also the last eye tutorial you reblogged was amazing, but do you know any in English? I know this is a lot, and I'm sorry to bother you.
Hey hey! Itâs okay to ask me anything and always remember youâre not a bother in any for doing so! To answer your question, I started drawing in 6th grade? So aboutâŚ10+ years? I used to draw a lot back when I started but I stopped after I became so busy with relationships and schoolwork that I hardly drew. I also had health problems to worry about so that added to my long hiatuses too;;;Honestly speaking, drawing is more like a hobby for me probably because I donât see myself pursuing a career in the arts (since Iâm more inclined towards studying medicine) (Ëシá´ď˝ĽË)Coloring the lineart is quite simple! Hereâs how I do it usually (bear in mind I use Paint Tool SAI!) :
(I just realized Tumblr shrunk this image but what you should click on is the checkbox that says, âPerserve Opacityâ. Then choose a color and a drawing tool like the Pen Tool (on 100% opacity) and go over the lines with the desired color.)If you want to be more creative, you can use the AirBrush tool + Blur tool and different colors for a gradient effect:
Depending on whether youâre coloring your drawing or not, if itâs colored, this is what I do (cause I dunno how to explain it in words):
As for the eye tutorials, the ones I reblogged were from pixiv so I doubt youâll find much English-based ones there. What you can do is also look âeye coloring tutorialsâ on Deviantart. There are a lot of artists who provide a variety of tutorials based on different art programs!I hope this helps you in a way! If youâre a little more confused, you can ask me and Iâll do my best to help ya (cause Iâm kinda terrible with explanations and such but if you can understand all of that, bless you) ~ â(-âż-)â

At long last, the hip tutorial appears!
Poor neglected hips, such an awesome part of the body but so difficult to do *right*. It really just takes a few plotted landmarks and theyâll draw themselves, promise.Â
