"Huh. How âbout that! Back home, Mondays were part of the work week, but shoots, bro. Guess things are different here on the mainland."
Marlonâs grin spread as Fire talked to him with the condescending tone of a grown-up speaking to a child or small animal.Â
Oh yeah. The kid was givinâ off some vibes all right.Â
"Sure, dude. Gimme a sec."Â
The previous advisorâmay he rest in peace and let him forever hang ten on the big kahuna we call the afterlifeâleft behind a few things. A stash of granola bars, nearing expiration in the desk drawer. A well-loved Jiggypuff mousepad, perhaps passed down from his predecessor. And a file cabinet stuffed with the studentsâ records and transcripts.
Smiley swimsuit wondered if the old counselor left him any notes about this swagged out teen. There was probably an email sent to his new staff inbox, which was yet to be checked. Woops. Thankfully, Samsung GalaxyÂŽÂ Note III comes with the new Samsung Galaxy Gear Watch, which Marlon was sporting on his left wrist. The watch was bound to be broken at some point, likely to meet its demise after an unintentional dip in the pool. But for now, Marlon used it to log-in to his email account and figure out who the h*ll this punk was.Â
Marlon swiveled over to the cabinet (the novelty of the wheeled office chair still fresh), opened the top drawer, and skimmed through the manila folders.Â
"Himura, right? LesseâŚYeah. Youâre some credits short, yo. Did you transfer in late?"Â
"WH-WHA--" He swallows hard, eyes wide in panic. "It's. Monday?"
As the counselor reads the file, Fire scrambles to dig his phone out of his pocket. He hastily flips it open-- why yes, it flips, of course, being a scuffed up red Motorola RAZR V3â˘-- and feels his stomach sink to the floor. Monday, the display reads. 2:45 PM. He missed all his classes and was now eligible for a detention for breaking the dress code. Great start to the year, Fire.
He groans and for lack of a better word, facepalms. Ugggggggggh. "No, I. Just. I failed algebra and chem, and then I withdrew from a bunch of other classes when my grades got too low." Withdrawing helped keep his GPA high enough to stay on the basketball team.

Sizing up your competition?
Maybe! Thereâs nothing wrong with a little friendly competing, right?Â
Atta girl! Heh... I was gonna run, but⌠I forgot what the positions were⌠.⌠âŚ
Bench For Two? | Jasmine & Fire.
The lack of warm sunshine and bright blue the atmosphere had to offer mellowed out most of the students, many of them deciding that perhaps it would be best to focus on their classes and assignments. Even the more rambunctious of the student body seemed less then enthused to spend their time shouting and waving to others â they opted instead for pulling out their Xtransceiverâs and making calls to others across campus.
Jasmine sighed gently, her shoulders slumping ever so slightly as she sat down on one of the benches. In the midst of the courtyard, there were only a few brave souls including herself who had decided to sit out as the somber, overcast sky left a gray film over the usually bright sitting area.Â
While it was usually to dismay others, the Olivine Leader had to admit that she did enjoy cloudy days like this. Something about the darkened silver sky reminded her of the steel she loved so much. Not to mention that the lack of others made her feel comfortable, allowing her to finally eat in peace without having to rush about â she still hadnât mustered up enough courage to eat with the rest of the teachers in the faculty room.
She really did enjoy teaching, but the surprise of students popping in and out while she was trying to have lunch at her desk always managed to cut into her time.Â
â.. Thanks for the food,â she muttered gently to herself, straightening her posture and moving to her lunch box that sheâd prepared.
Finally, it seemed like she was going to have a nice lunch without any disturbances! .. Well, maybe..
The scene shifts to our lovable trainwreck protagonist, Fire Himura. He'd already finished scarfing down lunch from the cafeteria-- it was Taco Tuesday, so of course he'd been the first to get there-- and found himself with some time to kill and an insatiable craving to light up.
He heads down the hall with a particular destination in mind: the isolated courtyard sandwiched between two buildings. This being his fourth year here, Fire knew the ins and outs of campus. There were even a few hideouts that he alone knew the location of.
He pushes through the emergency exit door and a young woman comes into view, sitting alone at the benches. Aw man. Not that he didn't like meeting new people, but she was definitely not in uniform, which meant she was a teacher, even if she looked only few years older than him. Guess he'd go with cigarettes today.
Who hung out in the natural science building during their free time, anyways? His eyes trail over the neatly prepared lunch on her lap. Well. Now he felt kind of bad. Smiling in that goofy, signature way of his, Fire makes his way over.
"Mind if I sit here?" he asks, though he's already comfortably seated.

"He croaked!"
Marlon probably sounded a little too chipper about that, but after all, you would be too if youâd just beaten level 28 of the notoriously challenging Candy Crush. Setting down his Samsung GalaxyÂŽ Note III in triumph, he greeted the kid with a smile.Â
Haha. Oh boy. The swag was just emanating off of this guy. He reminded Marlon of his younger yearsâa simpler time, an era of frat parties and fake IDs. Freshman year was a wild ride.
"Whatâs up? Sent here âcuz of your shirt?"
"Oh," he says. "That. Sucks."
Fire hated that fart. Every visit to the office over the past few years had not gone his way no matter how valid his points, and it always ended in a long, annoying lecture about being a contribution to society. He especially hated when the old guy would threaten to call his mother, like he was still a kid or something.
To Marlon, he cracks a half-smile in return, but it's rather derisive. He talks slowly, as if explaining to a moron. "No... It's the weekend. I can wear whatever I want. Do you have a problem with my shirt?"
He clears his throat. "Actually, uh. I was told I needed to make an appointment because I can't graduate, apparently... It's probably in my file."Â While speaking, he pulls his hat off and punches it into shape repeatedly. His hair flops over his eyes.

Leaf smiles for the first time since she arrived in Unova. Itâs not the obviously fake, bitchy smile sheâs had plastered on here face for the first two days of school - itâs genuine. She shrugs, sitting down in the chair next to Fireâs. âIâm just here, I guess. I got bored of doing nothing.â
She fights the instinct to grimace. Fire had been her best friend for pretty much her entire life, and she hadnât even bothered to keep in touch with him. He was one of the only people she truly cared about. Heâd at least been traveling around different regions, chasing his dreams, so it made sense that he hadnât kept in touch. But all Leaf had done in the last four months was reorganize her closet. She shifts uncomfortably, wondering if she should do something - Fire usually would have tackled hugged her by now.Â
She punches him back lightly, glad that Fire chose to end the awkward silence. âUhh, about two days ago! I still have no idea where anything is, thoughâŚâ She pauses for a second, trying to remember where she is right now. She canât remember. âIâve been ok, I guess. I finally stopped pretending I was going to challenge the Elite 4 someday. Howâve you been lately? And when did you get here? No offense, Fire, but I never wouldâve expected you to be here.â
"No way? Welcome to the academy!"Â
Now clearly more at ease, Fire props his feet up on his desk, which is covered in a stack of books. He was at the library (?) working on some sort of project, but judging from the loud rap blasting through his headphones and the fact that none of the books had even been opened, it was fair to say that he hadn't been very productive.
"Yo, bored of doing nothing? You kidding me? Whydja think I'm here?" Fire chortles. "I'm so not a scholar. I went to school to kick back and relax. And staying in one place is pretty great. Been here three years, babe."
At her admission that she hadn't finished the League, Fire tilts his head to the side, unsure of what to say for a second. It took him four or five tries to beat the champion, and he nearly lost the faith and respect of his team during that whole ordeal. Leaf had always been more strategic about it. She probably didn't want to challenge them unless she was certain she would win. That was good... and bad, perhaps.
He doesn't say any of that though. "Hm. You always could, you know. You could kick my ass any day of the week. You have time. But if not, I guess high school's all about discovering yourself and all that bullshit." She was so brilliant she could do literally anything.

the start of something new (reprise)
'The good stuffââŚSomehow, Buck knew he was talking about weed, but all he could think of was cake.
Man, he was hungry. Anyway.
"Yeah, yeah. Long story." And not one he could remember, to be honest. It seemed like heâd been smoking for a long time, maybe even in a past lifeâŚbut, regardless, it was one hard habit to break. And as long as no one found out, heâd be fine.
"Just, uh, keep it a secret, yeah?" Buck grinned at Fire, lighting his and taking a puff. "Anâ itâs okay! I got in a while ago, I just havenât actuallyâŚmoved in. All my stuffâs sittinâ in a storage shed not too far from here. Summer cheerleadinâ hasnât left me a lot of time!"
"Of course, man," Fire says very seriously. He gives him a fistbump of confidentiality. "We're bros."
Truth be told, he's only known Buck for less than a year. He was the newest kid to make the basketball team last season, and his confidence and energy (not to mention the eye-catching golden streak) appealed to Fire right away. They're a pretty good duo, on and off the court.
"That's right! I forgot you had camp! You've gotta be so jacked now, yo. I have to go see you at a game sometime. And set me up with one of your cheerleader friends, remember?"
academydirtbag started following you
Leaf stared in surprise. âFire. What are you doing here?â The last time sheâd heard from him, he was still in Kanto, training. Or maybe it was Johto? She couldnât exactly remember, but he definitely hadnât been anywhere near Unova, or in school.Â
"Is anyone else we know here?" She wasnât sure if she wanted the answer to that question to be yes or no. It would be nice to already know a couple of people, since then she could probably avoid most people - but she wasnât sure if she could handle dealing with Fire, Red, and Green being there.
Actually, who was she kidding? She couldnât. If more than two of them were already at the academy, she was seriously going to consider transferring.
Fire pulls an earbud out, turning around quizzically to see who had called his name. Standing behind him is the last person he would've expected to see here-- "Leaf?" he says, eyes widening. He moves to get up and nearly trips over his own chair. "I could ask you the same thing."
His best friend since childhood, pretty much the most important girl in the universe... at the academy? Fire feels a sudden tinge of embarrassment and holds back the bear hug greeting he'd usually give. So much for best friends. It'd been years since they'd been in contact, and I guess living on the road for most of your teen years can be isolating. He should have checked Facebook more often.
"Uh... No, just me. Haha!" He slings a light punch at her shoulder. "When did you transfer? How've you been?"

At the mention of âdollâ, Hikariâs pout deepened before she straightened back up to maintain some air of authority. She looked between Calem and Fire, who looked dubious and unsuspecting respectively.Â
Hika tapped her foot impatiently. âYou guys know the fountain isnât a pool, right? Youâre not supposed to be in there.â
After locating his hat in the middle of Fire talking, Calem returned his attention to the conversation. He knew for sure that this wasnât a pool and he didnât want to get in trouble for it. He really hoped this wouldnât turn into a situation of âin the wrong place at the right time.â
Lifting a foot to step on the fountainâs edge, he brought himself to a stand on top of it before hopping back down to the ground. âI know that, at least. It was just a joke, really.â He was referring to him implying it was a pool party.
He really didnât know who this other guy was, but⌠he was.. uh, really weird, to say the least.
"What-- what are you talking about? You've never heard of running through the fountain? This is a time-honored tradition of our academic institution!"
Catching the look on her face, Fire grins. "Heheh... Juuust kidding. This guy over here," he says, waving to a thoroughly soaked and unimpressed Calem, "felt like taking a dip. And I felt like joining him. It's hot out. Can you blame me?"
Fire steps out of the fountain too and pulls his shirt back on, but not before pretending to flick water at Hikari. "Oh, lighten up. It's a beautiful day. Just enjoy it."

the start of something new (reprise)
Buck was hyped. Almost too hyped. Like, the hypest hype.
Hype.
He made his way up to the roof where he had seen his roomie hanging out; dangling over the campus like some sort of 90âs movie protagonist. When he reached the doors, they were already opened, presumably propped as to not be locked up here.
And there he was. Fire. Senior at FP. Fellow basketball player and also, apparently, fellow smoker. Whether or not his addiction was a secret like Buckâs could be discussed later.
The redhead sat down next to him, grinning while pulling out a cigarette of his own.
"Havinâ a deep moment up here or somethinâ?"
Fire glances over his shoulder and acknowledges his old teammate and new roommate with a respectful nod. The rooftop was kind of sacred space for him, particularly because it was the only place that the hall monitors left alone. The school rules were ridiculously strict.
"Hey bro. Haaaaaaa... Nah, haha. This isn't the good stuff."Â
Maybe Fire should be more surprised, since Buck is underage and all, but he had started early, too. Maybe when he was thirteen? Fourteen? "I didn't know you smoked," he says. "I'd have offered you one of mine, you know, as a goodwill gesture. When'd you get into town?"
Blind leading the blind? | open post
The start of a term meant that students were moving into their dormitories, and new teachers were settling into their classrooms. Although Marlon wasnât an instructor, he had a cornerâmore like a modest sliver, reallyâof campus to call his own. He wasnât going to complain, though; the fact he was working a salaried job was enough to impress the guy. He reckoned that was pretty good for a recent graduate anyhow. Especially since he wasnât exactly the dude for the jobâŚbut he was a natural swimmer (as to be expected of someone described as âmore marine than the seaâ), the school needed a coach, and they managed to find something for him to do while he was on land.
Marlonâs Business Bachelor of Arts hung ever so slightly askew in the guidance counselorâs office, and while waiting for the first troubled student of the year, his thumbs swiped across the screen of his cell phone. Time to kill what was probably going to be eight hours of nothing.
âŚProbably.
Fire breezes in, looking sleepy and strangely devoid of his usual enthusiasm. While no one has more school spirit than this senior, the guidance office-- wait, the entire administrative building-- was not his favorite place to be. No fond memories here.
He sits down and takes a second to readjust the Supreme snapback (with its official sticker still on) perched atop his head. He's also wearing unwashed basketball shorts and a marijuana leaf print tank, which I'm telling you just because I feel like it's relevant. And he hasn't showered, but it's whatever because he's b-balling later.
"So," he says with a defeated breath, "Where are we now--"
"...Wait... Wait a second. Hey, what happened to the old guy? Is this the counselor's office?"
no time for peace and quiet | open
Fire was not the only person witness to the event. Seeing the boy whoâd done the pushing run off, Hikari had run after him in a huff. She wasnât a hall monitor for nothing, after all. When she caught up with him, she pulled out a notepad, handing him a detention slip with puffed-out-in-annoyance cheeks.
As she put the notepad back in her bag, she felt as if she was forgetting something â oh right! The boy whoâd been pushed into the fountain⌠Hikari turned around just in time to spot a boy she recognized from Student Council ripping off his shirt and jumping into the fountain with a declaration she couldnât hear.
Oh noâŚ
Putting on her best stern expression, Hika approached the fountain with her hands on her hips. She was trying to come off as intimidating, but at best, probably appeared like an angry toddler.
"What are you two doing?"
Just as he was pushing himself up and becoming his own rescuer, there seemed that someone else would be joining him in the fountain today. Not only did his jump into the shallow water cause some of it to splash in his face (again), but it also made it difficult for him to see immediately once he was on his feet. His hat had been abandoned somewhere in the water and he was working on pushing his hair out of his face just as a girl he didnât really recognize approached.Â
Hey, no one ever said that angry toddlers couldnât be scary, and if Calem had anything to say about it, this one definitely was, even though she wasnât actually a toddler. Actuallyâ hey, she wasnât in any of his classes, but he definitely knew her face from somewhere.. Hmm.. But where- oh, right, not the point.
He realized that heâd been squinting at her (how embarrassing), so he turned his attention over to the other⌠swimmer, allowing his bangs to fall back once he was sure he could see. âUhâŚ. Pool party?â He offered. That was what this guy said, right?
Overhearing some kind of conversation going on, Fire momentarily pauses in his revelry. He wades over to join them, a grin spreading wide when he sees the baby-faced blunette. Hahaha. That girl! Yeah, yeah. Of course.
"What's up, doll?" he asks casually, hanging over the side of the fountain. He snaps his fingers a couple of times before coming up with a name. (During StuCo meetings he just mentally referred to her as Buzzkill.) "... Right! Hikari! There a problem?"
no time for peace and quiet | open
It was just another day at the academy and Calem was making the best use out of it that he couldâ haha, not really, that was just a joke. It was the beginning of the year, so it wasnât like there was anything he could particularly slack off on yet, anyway. Instead he found himself sitting on the edge of the school parkâs fountain, trying to find some peace outside of the dorms.Â
It was nice and simple like this, just him and his cell phone to keep him company (he was becoming progressively better at 2048 as the minutes passed), and he was starting to think that if time could just stop for a while, this would be a great way to spend it. Being alone, but not lonely, was one of his favorite past times as of recent.
Of course, nothing ever stays this way forever and time just moved on normally. Before he knew it, his intense 2048 playing had led his phone to slip right through his fingers. Calem leaned down to grab the device, but as he was sitting back up, someone walked by with a particularly hazardous bag that just so happened to nail him in the face.
âOwââ
Not only did this cause him to drop his phone again, but the momentum caused him to fall straight back into the fountain, his legs hanging over the edge of the stone garden decoration, and the person who caused the crime didnât even notice! This was definitely not part of his plans.Â
Fire was not the pusher perp-- he was harmlessly passing through-- but the loud splash to his right definitely catches his attention. Some nerd fell in the water. This was guaranteed to happen at least once every year, but this was pretty early...
WHOA. WAIT. The fountain, a beloved academy landmark... It had a fairly large basin, a nice girth... HMMM. Why hadn't he thought of this earlier?!?
"POOL PARTY!!!" he bellows before whipping his shirt off and leaping into the shallow waters. This is a scene. Everyone is staring. It has a ways to go before becoming a school tradition.
the start of something new (reprise)
Evening was on the precipice; the clouds were tinged just the slightest shade of pink. Fire smirks amusedly as the smoke he is exhaling disappears into the velvety air. Great weather.
He looks down to a bird's-eye view of campus, where various people are milling about the fountains and the library steps. Freshmen, their hovering parents, several people he recognized here and there. Geez, that was, like, forever ago. Right now, being a senior feels totally awesome. He is literally above the rest of the school. Well, not that far up-- like, two stories. He could jump down and only break an ankle.
His lanky legs kick back and forth against brick as he takes another puff of his cigarette. As of this current moment he is sitting out on the edge of the dormitory rooftop.
There's so much pressure this upcoming school year. Pressure to be the best year yet, to win the basketball tournament, to leave his mark on the academy, to figure out what to do with his life...
It's not such a bad thing to just sit here and take it little by little. Yes, Fire is capable of deep thinking and self-reflection. This was a good moment to start with.
