Honestly between everything that has happened to rick and morty's runtime I'm glad that the show is good again, this new season has been very consistent in quality.
After a whirlwind season that took us through exhilarating highs and devastating lows, peeled Rick's character down to the root, gave Evil Morty a bombastic reintroduction, and reminded us, over and over again, that Morty's a broken child trapped in an abusive home, it all came down to this. We knew from the previews that Morty would run away in "Field Of Dreams," but we didn't know how it would play out.
Would Morty finally get fed up and march out of his family's lives, leaving season nine on a cliffhanger? Would he beat Rick's ass and tell him that he's not coming back until he gets his act together? Would he break down in tears and finally force the Smiths/Sanchezes to confront how much they've hurt him?
Well...not exactly. This is still Rick and Morty, and an explosive breakdown would've been too predictable. Instead, the writers went in the opposite direction, which challenged the way I think about the characters and their relationship--and it challenged Morty's perception, too, in ways that will probably stay with him for the rest of his life.
At the start, we learn that whenever a Rick or Morty dies, a bunch of Ricks and Mortys from other universes immediately show up to take his stuff. During one particular visit, C-137 Morty runs into a suave, laid-back Morty who has his own portal gun. He gives C-137 the idea to start watching other Mortys' funerals--which, for an abused child, seems like the perfect way to see how much his family really loves him.
Most of the funerals are a little goofy until he finally reaches a universe where Jerry gives an impassioned speech about how much he loves his son. As always, Chris Parnell nails the voice acting, displaying an impressive range of emotions without losing Jerry's distinct tone. Morty's clearly impressed, too. He even follows the family to a graveyard and watches behind a tree until a friendly dog blows his cover, forcing him to confront the Smiths.
I expected C-137 to pretend to be Mort resurrected so that he could stay in this universe forever. Instead, he surprised me by telling them the truth about his existence. These loving versions of Beth, Summer and Jerry don't quite know how to react, but they get attached to C-137 and invite him to visit whenever he wants. Morty also learns that this universe's Rick took off so that they wouldn't have to deal with his alcoholism, which seems like another bonus.
Despite everything, C-137 does love the family he has at home, so he decides to go back--until he has to deal with their bullshit, and then he runs right back to the happy household. The Smiths greet him with hugs and take him to a nice restaurant, where he shocks them with tales of his own deaths and resurrections. He's so used to Rick's sci-fi hijinks that he doesn't even realize how disturbing they are to outsiders.
After C-137 Morty bonds with Jerry in the garage, the two of them decide to spend the weekend in Jerry's log cabin. It's safe to assume that C-137 Jerry has never done anything like this (when's the last time he even had a plot with Morty?), and Morty's about to learn what a good father is like for the first time. Or so he thinks.
This is the part that didn't surprise me at all: turns out, this version of the Smiths isn't as great as they seem. A sudden argument leads to the reveal that Jerry basically played Rick's role, dragging Mort on wild outdoor adventures and forcing him to become strong in the hopes of making him immortal. We met the Rickest Morty at the start of season nine, and we concluded with the Rickest Jerry.
In fact, the whole family seems like a bunch of Ricks. When C-137 Morty escapes, we learn that this household is smart, obsessive, resourceful and violent, stopping at nothing to recover their surrogate son. Morty running away from the Smiths isn't shocking, but who would've guessed that he'd have alternate versions of them on his tail?
Luckily, C-137 Morty is smart and resourceful, too. He reconnects with their Rick, who kicked the alcohol habit and works as a university professor. Unlike his extended family, this Rick seems to be genuinely good. He's not perfect, but he's attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, holding down a steady job at MIT and enjoying life with his Swedish wife, Uli. He even agrees to help Morty get back to his universe without expecting anything in return.
Sounds great, right? We know that the Smiths are going to confront Morty at some point, but it seems safe to assume that this Rick will hold them off and let Morty escape. Maybe he'll die tragically in the encounter, but he'll die as a decent man.
It's no secret that C-137 Rick is a bad influence on Morty. In fact, nearly every adult in his life has harmed or neglected him to some degree. However, this episode brings up a point that I'd never considered: maybe Rick and Morty's dynamic is toxic for Rick, too. And, maybe, Morty just can't help but feed into it.
I'm not blaming Morty for C-137 Rick's behavior--he's a child trapped in an impossible situation, and it's Rick's responsibility to get help--but as MIT Rick starts to change, Morty's character takes a surprising turn. He watches Rick become increasingly violent and angry, but he doesn't urge him to back down for his own sake. Instead, he encourages Rick to keep going as his obsession with inventing portal travel starts to erode his marriage and his sanity--and eventually destroys everything around him.
C-137 Rick is a hot mess. And yet, Morty still smiles when he sees MIT Rick for the first time because he misses his grandpa. And when Uli asks Morty how he became so manipulative, Morty says, "He belongs more to me than to you." And he reaches out in panic when he thinks Rick's going to die back in "Rick Fu Hustle." And he hates Evil Morty for trying to take his Rick away from him because Rick belongs to him, and nobody else.
When MIT thinks he's finally cracked portal travel--after losing his job, his wife, his empathy and his sobriety--the Smiths barge in, ready to take Morty away. This leads to a violent confrontation where Jerry kills Rick, Rick kills Jerry, Summer ends up dead and Beth commits suicide in front of Morty while screaming in agony. Morty's all alone...until a few seconds later, when Estate Sale Rick barges in and a bunch of Ricks and Mortys arrive to start looting the joint.
C-137 Rick shows up, too. He has no idea what happened (or maybe he does; who the hell knows with him) and takes Morty back to the house. After all that, he and Prime Rick are still the only two Ricks who successfully invented portal travel. He might be the only Rick who loves his Jerry, too, even if he'll never say it to his face.
Morty might have changed from this experience, but he learns pretty quickly that his family hasn't: Beth and Summer are still distant, Jerry's still self-involved, and nobody comments on his blood-streaked MIT shirt. Rick even drunkenly barges into Morty's bedroom at night, a callback to a recurring joke that's been around since the pilot.
However, Rick doesn't have destruction in mind this time. Instead, he invites Morty to go on a nighttime ride on his motorcycle. He gives Morty a helmet, then encourages him to take the wheel while he triumphantly shouts, "I'm your dad, Morty! I'm your fucking dad!"
I didn't expect that to be the final takeaway from this episode, but...honestly, he's not wrong. I've been saying for a while that Morty and Summer are basically his kids, and Morty smiles and agrees. Who's the one who spends the most time with him? Who else loves that kid more than anything, despite his trauma and addiction?
After the emotional turmoil in this season, I expected a brutal conclusion, but the writers wisely chose to end season nine on a gentler note. I learned a lot about the characters while these episodes aired--and, if you've been following along with this blog, I learned a lot about myself, too. It was a wild ride--but, ultimately, the show didn't lose sight of what really matters.
Sometimes, it's easy to get caught up in the chaos surrounding this series. But when you strip away the controversies, toilet humor, sci-fi craziness, twist endings, emotional pitfalls and graphic violence, you realize that none of that noise really makes the show great. It's not about shocking the audience. At its core, it's just about Rick...and the 14-year-old boy who loves him.
I think this finale, like the whole season, showed that Morty is looking for an adult who would accept and support him no matter what – a theme that really comes through in the finale, which is emotionally devastating. I also think the aim of the finale was to show that Rick’s alcoholism isn’t the root of the problem, but rather a consequence of it, and that giving up alcohol or abstaining won’t solve it at all unless Rick makes certain decisions.
Following the episode’s plot, Morty goes on a run through the funerals despite Rick’s warning that it’s just emotional self-indulgence, because Morty hears how much his family cares for him and that they love him. I think Morty was, in a way, envious of those Mortys, because he believed that a family shows that kind of love whilst they’re still alive. But probably not because those Mortys received more love, but because the family were grieving – since those Ricks weren’t able to revive the Mortys, they were mourning, so they focused on the nice things and happy memories.
An Alternative Family and Professor Rick
We see Morty getting what he wants and ending up with a family who’d never had a portal gun or any of those adventures. Their life was normal and, according to Morty’s first impression, perfect, and he, craving love that wasn’t tied to transactions or humiliation, would visit them. Outside the home, he made up for what his family didn’t give him, but still, when that Jerry gave him a choice and offered to let him become his son, Morty hesitated and didn’t want to stay. This shows that he still valued Rick and his family, even if they neglected him in certain ways (because the fact that they care about each other has been shown many times, but there’s no denying that they’re also cruel to one another and neglect each other, as was evident in the camp episode, where, even though Beth and Jerry were drunk, they wanted to save their children, but they were drunk).
When the truth about this ‘normal’ family comes to light, so does Rick’s past. This shows that the Smiths tried to be perfect in every way – that ideal American family, led by the self-assured Jerry with his perfectionist tendencies, which, as we can see, weighed heavily on their Morty, as he sought an escape (the question is whether suicide wasn’t also an escape, given how Jerry was stalking our Morty).
The story of this Rick – let’s call him Professor Rick – is different from ours. I think this is a rather significant point, because this Rick never invented the portal gun and, from what he says, hasn’t seen his daughter for 17 years – that is, since Summer’s birth or since Beth fell pregnant. It was probably Jerry who kicked Rick out, because Beth grew up in a home with an alcoholic, and Jerry became her saviour. That’s why he had a firm position as head of the family and quite a lot of authority.
I think it’s also important here to show that Professor Rick, even though he didn’t drink, didn’t choose his family. He moved on with his life – and never spoke to Beth or her family again. Even though he didn’t drink, and they would probably have accepted him (albeit with some reluctance and after a long process), he didn’t choose his family. He chose science, but he failed, so he gave up completely. Although he got married and, as he claimed, led a happy life, he still never spoke to his daughter. On the contrary – he still harboured a grudge that he hadn’t managed to invent the gun and that he’d lost Diane. This is evident from the fact that he still had his workshop, photos of Diane and the plans for the pistol, but they were hidden away deep inside – like a thorn he allows to remain there. And if he’d truly come to terms with it, he would have thrown them away. Furthermore, Rick’s wife said that this would have been his second divorce, which means that after Diane, and before this wife, Rick had been married once more, and that marriage had broken down.
To be honest, I do wonder what sort of medication Professor Rick is taking – could it be, for example, medication for ADHD or depression, although I’m leaning more towards ADHD.
But getting back to the point: Professor Rick demonstrated through his behaviour that alcohol was not the root cause of the problem, but rather a consequence that allowed the problem to develop. The problem was, as Professor Rick himself puts it, his desire to create, innovate and develop in science – an almost obsessive one (perhaps at that point he’d even stopped taking his medication, which intensified his obsession, especially as Morty was fuelling it, and Professor Rick hadn’t previously managed to invent the portal gun). Professor Rick chose science over family, and he stuck to his moral principles because he had to – because, despite being intelligent, he wasn’t the cleverest being in this universe.
A comparison with Rick C-137 and the complexity of the relationship
Which, all things considered, I think places him closer to Rick Prime and the Ricks from the Citadel than to Rick C-137. Because C-137 invented the Guna portal, but was able to give it up for his family, as they gave him fulfilment – yet it was Rick Prime who took his family away from him. That’s why Rick C-137, having been forced into it and with no other options left, chose science. This is the opposite of what Professor Rick and many other Ricks did. But he has problems with alcohol, with depression, and with being emotionally immature, giving in to impulsive thoughts which he later regrets.
This shows just how complex Rick C-137’s character is, and the depth of his problems. Even though he got Diane out of his head last season, he still hasn’t come to terms with his grief. And we’ve seen time and again that, although he can be supportive and isn’t afraid to show his feelings to Morty (as in the episode ‘Rick Fu Hustle’), emotionally Rick quickly gives in. He doesn’t know how to resolve the conflicts he himself causes, stemming from his lack of emotional maturity and his alcoholism. Rick is unable to communicate openly, and his inner conflicts were highlighted in the episode where Rick decapitated himself. This demonstrated the issues he blames himself for and how, at the same time, he over-analyses his every move, yet also succumbs to impulsiveness – knowing that both are wrong. Rick is a character with serious problems.
Morty isn’t a good person either, in the sense that whilst he just wanted to go home, he fuelled Professor Rick’s obsessions and ambitions in the process. He’s also dependent on Rick, but in a different way – because Rick is simply the only person in the family who is there. No matter what happens, and even if Morty insults him, Rick is simply there, which gives Morty more than the rest of the family (which is toxic and terrifying). But Morty’s just a child. The line about Rick being ‘more his’ than that wife refers more to the fact that Rick always ends up with Morty, and Morty always ends up with Rick, because Morty has seen this happen a million times, treating it as a constant in the multiverse.
The Smith family, indifference and lessons from the finale
On the one hand, one could criticise the fact that the family didn’t look for Morty, nor did Rick, but how on earth was Rick supposed to find him? Morty had his own portal gun and set off on a funeral run without Rick, so from Rick’s perspective, when Morty didn’t return for a long time, even if he was aware that Morty might have got into trouble, he wouldn’t have been able to find him (or it would have taken a very long time). Such a search – even if he were to look for Morty’s signature, as Rick once did when searching for Prime – would certainly have taken some time. And the family? Rick could have told them that Morty was doing something for him, or made up an excuse. We’ve seen many times in previous seasons that Rick doesn’t tell anyone in the family when something happens to the children or when he loses track of them (as in the post-apocalyptic world episode, where he prepared the robots, or the Kuato episode). The family might not even have realised there was a problem (which also shows a certain kind of neglect, but also a habit of dealing with this situation and similar ones).
I think the fact that Rick was worried about Morty is shown by how quickly he disappeared from the auction and how unemotional he was during it, as he showed practically no interest in it at all, but simply snatched Morty away straight away.
Morty is deeply traumatised by this episode, partly because he might feel he destroyed that Rick and those Smiths, but they already had their own problems and were toxic (albeit in a different way to his own family). Morty was more of a catalyst who sped things up, although he might not realise this and blame himself for the whole situation. But he also saw that Rick’s problem isn’t alcohol itself, but rather that it’s a consequence.
The motorbike scene shows that Rick cares about Morty, because he listened to his advice about the magnets and took him for a simple ride. This cemented Rick’s character as a supportive figure who loves Morty (yes, in a toxic way – I’ll agree with that – and that it brought them closer together, but also made Morty dependent, leading him to consciously choose to stay in the relationship with Rick because that’s what gives him stability).
Incidentally, despite everything, I wouldn’t blame Rick for the fact that Morty has no friends his own age, because Morty didn’t have any before Rick either. The fact that Rick ensures Morty still doesn’t have any is another matter altogether, and is more a choice on Morty’s part – it’s hard to say whether it’s a conscious or unconscious choice, as Morty does spend time at school and with others.
Summary and expectations for the future
Overall, I found this season satisfying, as it focused heavily on Morty and his relationship with Rick, as well as on several aspects of his relationship with his family. For me, this season carried the story through from start to finish, although I do wonder how it will develop in future seasons, given that Season 12 has been given the green light.
I think that for Rick and Morty’s relationship to be healthier, Rick obviously needs to stop drinking, but he also needs therapy. I hope that future seasons will focus on someone in the family finally recognising the problem in Rick and Morty’s relationship, because clearly the family doesn’t seem to realise the full picture or the extent of the toxicity. If I had to pick someone, I’d go for Summer, because it was clear from the camp episode that she and Morty have a close bond. With Summer, even if they argue and are mean to each other, we’ve seen that a single phone call is enough for them to help each other (as in the ‘Empathy Tongs’ episode, where, even though Morty lacked empathy, he helped Summer at her request and they supported each other when Head-Rick and Body-Rick were fighting).

I honestly dont expect them to follow up on that Father-son bit in future seasons (at least directly) But like omg Imagine Jerry's reaction if Morty accidentally calls Rick "Dad" in front of him or something. He'd be soooooo mad lol
There's just so much going on in this episode. I'm not really a person who does reviews or spends too much effort analyzing things, so please be patient with me loll. This might be a little ramble-y
I really liked this finale... Probably one of my favorite episodes of the show, ever... I have a lot to say about this episode but I'll keep it Morty-centric!!
I enjoyed how, for a moment there, Morty got to experience what his family would be like without the inter-dimensional travel and general dysfunction (at a glance!!! (eyes emoji)). He could experience, just for a while, an emotionally open family that could say they loved him so mundanely... a family who genuinely wants to spend time with him... A family who shows concern upon hearing he was once hurt and in pain.
It makes me so sad to see him recall that story of him dying like it's just a funny little anecdote. Things like that are just Normal to him now, so he doesn't think much of it anymore. A reoccurring bit I see throughout this season is Morty directly or indirectly seeking affection from his family... Specifically, I think about the scene in the Sympathid episode where he gives a speech about how all he wants is for someone to hug him, just because. So of course, it's no wonder he gets attached to the affection of the Moral Family really quickly.
This version of his family seems perfect, providing all that he could ever want. But under the surface..? We don't know too much about how their daily lives operated outside of Jerry's perspective, but we see some less-than-stellar implications upon seeing Mort's journal. Mort was so pressured by his father to complete all of these crazy and difficult achievements that he wanted to run away. And he died before he could escape. So it's pretty safe to say that the Morty who lived in that dimension wasn't living the ideal life that Morty Prime would expect. There was still some degree of existing dysfunction in the family even before Mort's untimely death.
Another thing that interests me is the funeral hopping bit. It's not uncommon for victims of emotional neglect to imagine drastic scenarios happening to them so they can feel the external affection and validation they long for. After all, isn't it a common trope that your loved ones will voice all of their secret hidden love, and maybe their regrets at how they may have mistreated you, at your funeral? Morty could directly live that fantasy through the multiversal funeral hopping. I'm actually miserable. If he wasn't caught by that dog, I wonder how long he would have kept doing it for... Would he have ever felt satisfied, hearing those loving words for a version of himself that really isn't him, from versions of his family that aren't really his?
Abouutt the topic of Rick calling himself Morty's father as well as Morty accepting himself as his son. It shocked me at first, but thinking about it a little more, I think it's a Very Interesting Direction to take. And I don't dislike it. It mirrors what happens earlier in the episode, where Morty jumps at the chance to call himself Moral Jerry's son. Generally, I don't think it'd be crazy to say that Morty has become very disillusioned with his relationship with his own parents. It's not that he doesn't love them- but even in the episode previous, he mentions that doesn't consider either of them much to look up to, and they usually seem to disappoint him when it comes to meeting his needs. Jerry is usually too absorbed in himself to notice him, and Beth is a little too emotionally distant to connect with him. (There are exceptions but I'm speaking in a general sense). This finale's conflict with Moral Jerry and the Moral Family is one of those nails in the coffin.
Even if he's hurt, or degraded, or put through hell by him, Rick is the family member who consistently seeks out Morty's company. In the Moral universe, Rick is the one Morty seeks when he's in trouble. And that Rick, even though he ruins his own life and dies in the process, does graciously open his home to him and gives a great effort to get him back to his universe.
When Morty's hurt or in danger, he calls for Rick. When Morty seeks advice, he goes to Rick. When Morty wants to go to the store to pick up Pokémon cards, who does he go to? He goes to his blue haired loser drunkard grandfather. ((At the very beginning of the episode, in his dying chili breath, an alternative Morty calls out for Rick.)) In a weird kinda screwed up way, I guess Rick does fill the role that a parent can take.
It's a complicated feeling because Rick's presence in Morty's life is indeed very toxic, and he's a great cause of Morty's screwed up way of thinking. We the audience are used to it by now, but it's really sticks out in an uncomfortable way when we see how he acts around people who are a little more used to a "Normal" life. For example, the comment he makes about Moral Rick's wife being a F*** robot, The story of his death that he tells the Moral Family at dinner, the encouragement he gives Moral Rick on the side of the curb about Diane and portal travel, and the little interaction he has with Moral Rick's Wife when she asks how a 14 year old boy is so adept at "mind poisoning". It's not that Morty's trying to be cruel, or evil. But the things he says and the actions he takes are a result of the mindset he's grown to adopt after all of his experiences. ((I think back to season 3, where he tried so hard to keep Summer away from Rick so that she could live a "normal" life that he felt that he no longer could. That "Normal" or "Moral" life, i guess, is inaccessible to him, now. This is part of why he could never truly be compatible with this kind of universe.))
I have a lot more thoughts on. Moral Rick, Portal Travel, and also Ted somewhat, but I'm geetting tired so Im going to wrap this up. One final thing I want to say regarding Rick and Morty in this episode: I really like how the finale ends with that motorcycle ride... It's another point towards Rick consistently seeking out Morty just to spend time with him. The motorcycle journey so normie of them, especially Rick... But I think it's also meant to parallel the normie stuff that Morty liked doing with the Moral family.
In a way, the closeness of a bike ride is kind of like a hug, right? It's so bittersweet. I'm so conflicted. I'm miserable. Release Season 10 tomorrow!!!!!!
