Surviving the summer of PhD program admission 2/?
- Officially graduated last week. I guess it was fun changing my degree to Master's on ORCHID and ResearchGate profiles.
- Started on the slides for my interview for the PhD programm. It's so hard to make slides that are both pretty and efficient. I'm also nervous about the interview because I don't have much of a groundwork for the dissertation yet. Well, I have some, but it's either incomplete or a bit far-feched.
- I started learning LaTex! I guess I should've do it earlier, but it's not so popular in our lab. So far I think it's cool and very helpful faith the text formatting.
- I'm leaving for the conference on Sunday. I have to give an oral talk on Monday. I'm so scared to give a talk on the conference that is not aimed to students.
- There is also a lot going on at the lab. Like I've started writing another paper. Also, I'm trying to prepare new structures for the (PhD) experiment but keep failing due to very stupid reasons. Me and my friend got an old microscope (it made in 1960s, I think) from our advisor. We're tinkering with it. Hopefully, we'll be able to upgrade it bit and use it to make a set-up for the assembling structures from 2D materials.
The worst thing I've had to learn over this PhD is that thinking takes time. And sometimes that time looks like you are fucking around.
Surviving the summer of PhD admission 1/?
It's graduation day tomorrow but I'm so deep into PhD application I don't have time to process (or celebrate) that I am Master of Science now. Like 15 years old version of me would think that it's cool.
A few days ago an email poped up with an information about admition. As it turns out, I'll have to submit a thorough four year plan for my studies at the interview. I had a hard time completing it since the first steps will affect the later steps in a way I can't really predict. I'm also changing my research direction a bit, so I'm kinda scared to mess up the interview.
I also have to present at the conference in a week and I'm so not ready.
Accomplishments for today:
1) Got a recommendation letter from the lab director.
2) Prepared a draft for my four year research plan.
3) Submitted the admission documents.

Finished my master's at the uni of my dreams and all I fell is a relief, not an achievement.
Like I know that I'm good at what I'm doing and I love my job at the lab. I know I deserve the 10/10 grade for the thesis. But somehow, getting it feels like it's nothing.
I'm also really happy I didn't embarrass me or my advisor.

My advisor wants me to present my work on the seminar of our facility. He thinks it might make my presentation at the conference in july easier. It might me true, but I have a thesis defence this month and a lot of stuff I need to do. Also, presenting a work to a crowd of people I know is very boring and very terrifying at the same time.
I also feel like I can't say no cause I'm afraid to disappoint people :(

I was very close to perfecting my e-beam lithography design and parameters when the equipment started working wierldy. Now I have to understand what's wrong and fix it. I hope that the computer is at fault.
We didn't start our grant application and we have like 13 days until deadline.
I also didn't get an answer from my thesis reviewer.
So, a great couple of days!
Me a week ago: I hope no one I know irl will ever see my Tumblr posts.
Me now: wonder what will happen if I add my Tumblr to my ORCID profile.

Some things I did past week, scince I disappeared a bit:
- spent two days on alignments of the SEM optics. You might wonder if I'm qualified for this. I'm not. But it went well and the resolution actually got better.
- performed some fib milling and microscopy
- tried to improve my technological progress. I still have a lot to improve
- found out we want to apply for a grant and we don't have a lot of time to write an application
- got a first response from my thesis reviewer and started revising the text
- found out my whole team knows I'm gay and no one hates me for it (i live in a homophobic country). So happy pride month I guess.
Never let anyone tell you you're too stupid for a STEM career. Science technology engineering and math all are skills that are difficult and need to be practised, but they're achievable
