Imagine if that kid gave the biggest piece to himself instead of sister and Rei slapped a kid. He looked so grumpy until the kid showed love for his little sister.

I honestly think animators realized they would look so good together and hence why they added extra scenes. It's part of why the love story is so good, you know they would be a good match in both personality and looks as a couple, and then you know the tragedy of how it ends.

Bat & Ein's dynamic is pretty much Joseph & Caesar; I wonder if Araki used it as inspiration. (Bat is Joseph because he's more playful in how he handles danger.)
