After the encore, Lonnie sat back down and asked the audience if they had any questions. One guy yelled, "Tell us about America. What the fuck is going on? What the fuck is happening?" Here was Lonnie's answer, "What about America? Grandmama had a rub board. And she said you have to rub, you have to really rub that big quilt. You have to rub it. You have to rub that big quilt. I'm not saying America is a big quilt, okay, but if its dirty and something needs to be cleaned, you have to wash it on that rub board, dip it in the water, wash and dip it back in the water, and then you have to take it and wring it out. Then put it in the rinse water. Then wring that out. And put it in another water. You've got about three or four waters before you get through with the quilt being clean enough. I'm not saying that America is a quilt. For every little patch to mean something in a quilt, we really need to give an understanding to the quilt. You gotta really care about it. Grandmama and them did all the labor. They already made the quilt available for you. It's on your bed. It's able to keep you warm. If you don't want it on your bed, you can put it at the foot of your bed. Or you can make a pallet on the floor. A quilt did a lot of things to keep people comfortable.
