scrapped painting,, thought i might as well post it
i want to put my thoughts behind this: this was supposed to be a piece for pride month, titled "you were loved". the sky is the color of the aroace flag (just upside down)!
basically, i wanted to show an aroace person — an old aroace person, to be precise. being aroace myself, i am always told that i will forever be lonely and miserable if i don't get a partner. so showing grace, who is aroace to me, as old and happy and fulfilled and oh so loved by his best friend, was really important to me <3

“I knew I would never see him as an old man. No, he’d leave us in a box, with jet black hair, and the only lines on his face would ones brought on by injury. You knew it wouldn’t end well. Despite all the training. All the brilliance. All the strength…Under it all there was just flesh, blood and bone. And a man who never feared death. You know as well as I do he was frightened by a great many things, but his own mortality barely made the top hundred list with him. I just…I…I just wasn’t ready to lose him.”
jason’s post crisis origin is so good because at the end of the day. bruce went to crime alley to grieve on his parents’ 25th death anniversary -> got his tires stolen -> got called a big boob -> laughed -> eventually gained a son
While Jason's pre-Crisis origin was designed to evoke and tie in to Dick's history, I think it makes sense to change his backstory to instead tie into Bruce's, who Jason interacts with much more. And Jason's role as a force for change and hope and belief is embodied by the way he can change a place of nothing but tragedy to Bruce into something he can find joy in. However difficult or traumatic our histories are, we can always grow and find happiness again.
rough Jason Todd page of sketches.

Happy Cow waiting for a train in Scotland having escaped from a field.
Cow detected ✅️
Man, when you compare Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) to Les Misérables (1862) and realize just how deeply the June Rebellion and the February Revolution changed Victor Hugo and his relationship with power and poverty.
Like he really went from a 29yo writing “poor people have tiny little lives that come and go, but our beautiful physical manifestations of power live on despite them, how cool is that” to a 60yo writing “we should be willing to burn it all down just to save one child. There are bloodstains on our hands every day that another baby in our community starves, another man is enslaved by the law, another woman must sell herself for bread. Vive les abaissés - we must join them to build a better world for our children.”
I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.
