Summary

Despite being attacked by the Port Mafia's militant "Black Lizard," the Armed Detective Agency easily repelled them. Just as Kunikida had feared, the employees were busy cleaning up the mess in the office. Meanwhile, Atsushi was ordered to accompany Ranpo to a crime scene. However, he was a little suspicious of the "great detective" who was so out of touch with the world that he didn't even know how to ride a train. Waiting for them at the crime scene were Detective Minoura and the body of a woman who was believed to be his subordinate. Ranpo boasted that he could solve it in under a minute, but…

"You're the culprit!" he declared, pointing to none other than Officer Sugimoto, who was standing right beside him. Contrary to Detective Minoura's astonished disbelief, Sugimoto was gradually cornered. He eventually pointed his gun at Ranpo and the others, but was apprehended by Atsushi. The direction of "Super Deduction" was intended to subtly show the "difference" between what appears to be supernatural ability and what isn't.

It's the opposite of the superpowered characters whose white writing glows on black manuscript paper.

If you look closely, you'll see that mathematical formulas are embedded in his glasses. That was the idea of ​​the cinematographer, Kambayashi-kun. Besides, only Ranpo thinks there's wind swirling around there (laughs). Think of it as a dramatic pose before the hero appears.

However, the glasses he wears at that moment have a special meaning. As will be revealed later, the detective agency was founded by Fukuzawa Yukichi solely to create a "place" for Edogawa Ranpo.

Those glasses were a gift from Fukuzawa Yukichi. But Ranpo isn't stupid, so he probably knows he can deduce things even without the glasses. I think of them as a symbol of the "lie" necessary to establish the mutual trust between Fukuzawa and Ranpo…

I think Akio Jissōji's "The Murder Case on D Hill" is a masterpiece among his later works... but that's beside the point.

Ranpo's obsession with the marbles in ramune soda reminds me of Teppei Arashi, perhaps because of the voice actor connection... but that's also beside the point. Sorry about that (lol). The original setting that Ranpo's "super-deduction" isn't a supernatural ability is really interesting.

Therefore, I understand that the character introduction captions use "ability name" instead of "supernatural ability name" almost entirely because of this setting and device by Ranpo (lol).

In the case of dialogue, characters often say the wrong things, but you can't put lies in the captions.

Episode 6 Azure Messenger Script: Enokido Yōji, Storyboard: Ikezoe Takahiro, Direction: Asai Yoshiyuki, Animation Director: Hattori Satoshi

Summary

A series of disappearances of tourists visiting Yokohama occurs, and the Armed Detective Agency receives a tip revealing the victims' whereabouts. Kunikida has Taguchi Rokuzō, an illegal hacker, investigate the source, but all that is found are photographs of the victims and the mysterious phrase "Azure Messenger" Uncertainly, they call a taxi driven by a driver and informant who claims to have seen two of the eleven victims, and Atsushi and his companions head to their destination.

While Dazai and Kunikida engage in their usual fruitless exchange, they arrive at a suspicious abandoned hospital. Imprisoned there is a beautiful woman who calls herself Sasaki Nobuko. Just as they are about to count the other men who were also imprisoned, gas is released. The next morning, the newspapers are filled with news of the Detective Agency's unauthorized raid, which resulted in the victims' deaths. It was a trap. Kunikida realizes that the taxi driver is involved in the case and heads to the building where he had been in contact with the mastermind. That place held a deep and fateful significance for Kunikida. And then, a letter of request arrived from the "Azure Messenger". Defuse the bomb by sunset tomorrow, or hundreds of people will die…

Creator Commentary

◎Takuya Igarashi (Director)

I wanted to focus on Kunikida's personal side while also showing Atsushi his interactions with Dazai, in order to succinctly represent the nature of the Armed Detective Agency. The fact that the anime could slightly alter the structure and "add a twist" is because there were elements that connected to the original work.

This episode made me appreciate the depth of the original work once again.

Now, they say that people of the opposite sex are more likely to fall in love in dangerous places, and that newborn animals mistake the first thing they see for their parents, but what kind of psychology does Kunikida fall into when he encounters a woman in a special situation? After helping Nobuko, everyone is talking about superficial things.

Dazai, however, is suspicious of her and is investigating her alone. Kunikida, too, is carrying something heavier than Dazai realizes. Everything that seems unrelated at first glance is actually connected behind the scenes and gradually overlaps into one… I hope that feeling is depicted in a satisfying way. This work doesn't feature many adult women, so the atmosphere changes quite a bit with just Nobuko. As the story shifts to her perspective, I consciously tried to keep the pace of episode 6 as fast as possible to create a more mature, roundabout mood.

I like Kunikida, that hopelessly straightforward "idealistic fool" with a screw loose… but that's a story for the next volume.

◎Enokido Yōji (Series composition and script)

Episodes 6 and 7 are a bit of a stretch, as the script for the first five episodes was mostly faithful to the original manga.

Because the timeline was changed from the original novel, Dazai and Kunikida are joined by another character, and the trio solves the case together. Since there wasn't an episode where the main trio worked together as detectives, I decided to boldly rearrange it and insert it here.

I'm grateful to Asagiri-san for his quick response to my hesitant question, "Is it okay to change the timeline of 'Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam' in the anime version and insert it in the middle of the first season?"

He immediately replied, "That's interesting!"

This episode also features Kunikida as the main character, and I thought his tragic love story with the heroine, Sasaki Nobuko, would be quite interesting, but when I actually wrote the script, the presence of young Rokuzō unexpectedly became thematically significant.

Because the Azure King incident left both Rokuzō and Nobuko feeling isolated, they needed a shared visual image. Inspired by the aquarium used when the Nobuko first appeared, I had Rokuzō place a single tropical fish in a large aquarium.

Memo

A university teacher saved by Kunikida and Dazai from an abandoned hospital, Sasaki Nobuko. She pointed out that a warning to bomb the city was related to the Azure Flag Incident. She shows wisdom and patience when speaking of the case but sadness when speaking of her lost love to Kunikida while looking out at the ocean from a cemetery.
