7th & Canid Ave

both logan & adem act as parallels to one another. in a sense. i think moreso to logan herself than we may personally believe. parasociality begins to erode critical thought and research, muddied by familial bias as well as environmental, and identity-related neuroses that lead to the lines being blurred between the two of them. adem herself is not entirely a reliable narrator either: we are forced to consider not only the historical integrity of what logan provides to us on adem's life, but also of adem's own account. what is true & what isn't fails to be overtly obvious to the audience as they go through this rabbit hole with logan. within adem's own life that we have presented to us, we consider entitlement. how much do we believe adem truly deserved the fame she wished for, and never got? not only that, but we are actively seeing a person, who passes just fine her communities, undermine her own identity and cast herself out, on her own, from personal growth. in what i've described in text before: "Adem is suicidally self-destructive, in the wake of his all-consuming goal: to fulfill his internalized prophecy of leaving a culture-altering legacy, through, what he's so naturally talented at without due practice, being people that he isn't." she abandons what opportunities she is given that would significantly improve her as a person for opportunistic decisions in all of the Wrong places.

there are the two big pieces of the puzzle, and there are several more scattered for you to pick up as you read the story once it's published, or in the progress of publishing (fingers crossed) (indie!). in the pinned msg for this blog, we're also giving a few other floating, vague clues, that i have provided to not spoil too much but be just enough information to give you an idea. "[Canis Latrans] contains themes commentating on and exploring racial oppression, internalized racism, exploitation (sexual and else wise), egregiously self-destructive behaviors, intersectionality, & queer identity. As well as ethics pertaining to the sensitive information we share of those we connect with post their death, the destruction and or alterations we make to history, & parasocial relationships."

ROLEPLAY

there have been several roleplay-specific iterations of adem in particular, and also in a few of my other characters from separate stories, or other cast members of canis latrans. new zinnowitz - created & written by me, a weird town in west virginia that sits in this sort of well in the time space continuum, where anything from any point in time can travel into it & have no ability to leave. the roleplay fell apart at some point due to college & the rlly lackadaisical approach we took instead of the horror thriller i intended. also my fault. there was crossover of a modern iteration of adem's character with this one (as initially i didn't have the idea of the time space continuum bs). adem was at one point attacked by a were-tiger woman and it turned her into such. nothing crazy. i fancy myself a nice were-animal character every once in a while, so u cant rlly blame me for going this route... because they're fucking awesome.

this one was the most developed. there was also torncreek, a small desert town for the ostracized monster*folk (*or whatever nonhuman or once-was) to live in peace. super slice of life. super relaxed. adem went from werewolf to ghost in this iteration. i'm way too lazy to go into further depth with some of these. i'm pretty intentional in the way i portray adem in particular in roleplays because she is both the easiest and hardest character to roleplay for me. it's incredibly easy to slip into a caricatured, ooc interpretation of her in the heat of the moment... so i limit my roleplay time for the most part, besides 1 on 1 things. a lot of the decisions made for what kind of form adem will take on is also informed by the original canon. for example, i had a super au for another rp server i didn't spend much time in, where adem was a shapeshifter, however whenever she tried to go back to her original form, she would always Picasso herself, unable to remember what exactly she looked like. yk generic body dysmorphia allusion.

REALLY SELF-INDULGENT SHIT

i'm a sucker for character relationship writing. it's obvious. whatever. i have quite a few memorable favorites from this, & of course mostly written with adem in particular. there are some with other characters of mine (elvio, for example). most of the time these are just a fun past time with a friend while you're sitting on the couch, talking abt ur work, & one of you go "what if"? two of my most developed are with @tallhouses (ollie) and @twerpulator (felice) (both more active on their instagrams, same users). with felice, adem is in a tumultuous polyamorous situationship with their characters eli & harper from What's In Between. takes place in Richmond, Virginia, and a lot of my other characters, even ones unrelated to Canis Latrans, make an appearance here (like Josiah, for example) (real ones know). at some point it sort of felt like a crossover universe. there's a ton of art still from this era on felice's instagram page, but everything i had up has been archived. here's some snippets though

i could go more in depth if you wish but a lot of it was discussed orally for hours on end, like 7PM-11AM STRAIGHT No stops and a lot of it is lost to time. all we have are the remnants of nostalgia & fondness. with ollie, we have Mazi, who used to be a more significant character in narrative before I went a more My Characters Only route with my writing and limited heavy collaboration on incredibly key narrative parts & character functions (for the sake of how this could impact the future of the narrative and its ability to be published if i wished, lol) (also takes a lot of stress off ur shoulders if you get too attached & then have to rewrite everything after a falling out) (tricky stuff!). it follows the original draft of that particular pair's storyline before it was rewritten (back when Canis Latrans was named Interstate kind of old). again, not something i care to elaborate on right at this minute because that would take an entire dedicated blog post of its own to do.. so just know... it was awesome.

so on so forth... lots of relationship bullshit scattered here and there with a lot of my friends. it's great if you wanna practice writing in collaboration with someone, or you want to polish your interaction and dialogue. well. if you're utilizing it for that reason. i was, but we all know i was also being, as the title says, incredibly self indulgent. and some self indulgence is needed ya know ... !!!!!!

MISCELLANEOUS

modern au, the usual au you would make if a percentage of your work is mainly in historical fiction. this au is also completely self indulgent and i never take these aus as seriously as i take my main canon... it's like home away from home. in the modern au two distinct things you receive from this is how adem & rodney approach their identities differently in a modern context versus a mid-century america one (which is really good practice and insight into how u can tweak the canon to be far more realistic in comparison to each other). and that adem has an entire tattoo sleeve in this iteration. whatever
