The Fine Print (A Heated Rivalry Fan Fiction) - Chapter 2
(gif source: flopugh)
plot summary: When vampires reveal themselves to the world, governments respond with rules, contracts, and something called the Ethical Feeding Program. Shane Hollander signs up because he believes in consent, in structure, in doing things the right way. He doesn’t expect to be chosen by Ilya Rozanov — ancient, powerful, and far too interested in Shane. What starts as a strictly negotiated arrangement becomes something far more fragile — and far more dangerous — than either of them anticipated.

Chapter 2
Shane sat cross-legged on his bed, the contents of Ilya’s folder arranged in a careful semicircle before him. He'd been staring at the papers for nearly an hour, reading each clause with the same careful attention he gave to reviewing player injury reports. The lamp on his nightstand cast a warm glow across the crisp white pages, making the black text stand out starkly against the paper.
He’d expected—he wasn’t entirely sure what. Something sinister hidden in the fine print, perhaps. A clause that would give Ilya more control than Shane was comfortable with. Something that would make this decision easy—a clear red flag that would let him file the contract away and forget about those blue eyes and that accented voice.
Instead, he found himself impressed by the thoroughness and care evident in every paragraph. The language was precise without being cold, careful without being distant. Each section addressed Shane's concerns before he could even fully formulate them.
"Feeding shall only occur with explicit verbal consent prior to each session," he read aloud, his finger tracing the words. "The Provider may withdraw consent at any time for any reason, and the Recipient will cease all feeding activity immediately."
Shane flipped to the next page, scanning the section on safety protocols. The contract specified regular health screenings for both parties, limitations on the amount of blood that could be taken in a single session, and mandatory rest periods between feedings.
The longer Shane read, the more unsettling it became. Not because of anything wrong with the contract—but because of how right it felt. Every clause, every protection, every consideration had been meticulously crafted. Ilya had anticipated his concerns, addressed his fears. The contract was perfect.
Shane ran his fingers over the signature line at the bottom of the page, still blank and waiting. He could picture Ilya drafting these terms, that intense gaze focused on getting every detail right. Making sure Shane would feel safe. Protected. Valued.
"Fuck," Shane whispered into the quiet of his bedroom.
The problem wasn't the feeding. It wasn't the contract. It was how easily he could imagine Ilya following every word of it with exacting care. How he could almost feel those cool fingers on his wrist again, gentle and reverent. How he could hear that accented voice saying his name—Shane Hollander—like each syllable deserved attention.
Shane closed his eyes, but that only made it worse. Behind his eyelids lurked the memory of Ilya's office, the way he'd looked at Shane while explaining the contract. Not as prey, not as food, but as something precious. Something worthy of his focus.
"This is insane," he muttered, gathering the papers together.
He'd known Ilya for all of a few hours. And somehow, impossibly, he trusted him. Trusted him with his blood, his body, his safety. And that was the real danger. It was dangerous how Shane's pulse had quickened when Ilya touched him. How he'd leaned into that touch without even realizing it. How he'd been thinking about those blue eyes for days.
Shane stacked the papers neatly and slipped them back into the folder, but he didn't return it to his desk drawer. Instead, he placed it on his nightstand, right next to his alarm clock. Where he would see it first thing in the morning. Where it would be waiting when he came home tomorrow night.
He didn’t sign it.
But he didn’t put it away.
Rolling onto his back, Shane stared at the ceiling, listening to the distant sounds of the city through his partially open window and trying not to think about how much he wanted to sign the contract.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand. Shane reached for it, half expecting—half hoping—to see Ilya's name on the screen.
It was Hayden. Did you sign it yet???
Shane typed back a quick No, still thinking, then set his phone aside. He needed to sleep. The team had a big game tomorrow, and several players were nursing minor injuries that would need his attention before they hit the ice.
But as he closed his eyes, all he could see was Ilya's face.
***
The ice beneath Shane's skates made a familiar, comforting sound as he glided across the rink. Practice had ended twenty minutes ago, but he'd stayed behind. Even though he couldn’t play professionally after the injury, being on the ice still grounded him. The cold, the silence, the simplicity of blade against ice cleared his head.
Three days had passed since his visit to The Ice Palace. Three days of staring at that folder on his nightstand. Three days of checking his phone, wondering if Ilya would text again.
He hadn't.
Shane pushed off harder, picking up speed as he circled the empty rink. The contract remained unsigned. Every time he reached for a pen, something held him back—not fear exactly, but a sense that once he signed, something fundamental would change. There would be a before Ilya and an after Ilya. No going back.
And yet, there was something about Ilya that kept drawing Shane back to the idea. Something in those piercing blue eyes that made Shane feel seen in a way he hadn't experienced before. It wasn't just physical attraction—though that was definitely part of it. But it was something deeper.
Shane executed a tight turn, spraying ice as he changed direction. The empty arena amplified every sound—his blades cutting through the surface, his breathing, the occasional creak from the boards. He needed this solitude to think clearly.
His phone buzzed in the pocket of his tracksuit. Shane slowed to a stop near the boards and pulled it out, his heart skipping when he saw the now-familiar number.
Have you made decision?
Ilya.
Shane stared at the screen, his thumb hovering over the keyboard. The fact that Ilya had waited three days to follow up—not pushing, not pressuring—somehow made Shane want to say yes even more.
Still thinking, he typed back. Sorry.
He waited, watching as three dots appeared immediately.
No sorry. Important decision. Take time you need.
A pause, then another message: But I hope you say yes.
Heat bloomed in Shane's chest. Those six words shouldn't have affected him so strongly, and yet they did. He tucked his phone away without responding and pushed off again, gliding across the ice with renewed intensity.
***
Ilya told himself he wasn’t waiting—right before he checked his phone again. He set the phone down on the marble counter with a sharp click. Nothing. It had been nearly an hour since his last text to Shane. The silence weighed on him in a way that made his jaw tighten. Ridiculous. He was acting like a lovesick teenager, not a centuries-old vampire
He moved to the floor-to-ceiling windows of his penthouse, gazing down at the city lights spread below him. The Ice Palace pulsed beneath his feet, bass vibrating faintly through the reinforced glass. Hundreds of people dancing, drinking, living their brief, bright lives, while he stood alone in his tower, waiting for a text message that might never come.
"Pathetic," he muttered in Russian, the language still more natural to him in moments of frustration.
Ilya ran a hand through his hair, disheveling the careful styling. Why was he so fixated on this human? Shane Hollander was attractive, yes. Intelligent, certainly. His blood had smelled rich and sweet, even from a careful distance. But Ilya had encountered countless beautiful humans with delicious blood over his long existence. None of them had left him checking his phone like this.
Had his last message been too forward? I hope you say yes. Five words that somehow felt more revealing than they should have. Perhaps he had miscalculated, misread Shane's interest. Perhaps Shane had been repulsed by his touch at the club, by the cool press of fingers against his warm wrist. Perhaps Shane had shown the contract to friends who had warned him away.
Ilya paced across the penthouse, his footsteps silent on the polished concrete floor. Why did he even care? If Shane didn't sign, there would be others. There were always others. Humans who would leap at the chance to contract with him, drawn by his wealth or power or the dark thrill of his teeth against their skin.
But they wouldn't be Shane.
The way Shane had looked at him—curious rather than afraid, thoughtful rather than dazzled. The way he had talked to him like he was human. And Shane wasn’t in it for the money, or the thrill. He hadn’t signed the contract right away like others would have. He took it seriously, studied the contract and considered the consequences. It was…refreshing. He liked it.
Ilya caught his own reflection in the window and frowned at what he saw. His eyes too intent, his posture too tense. This wasn't him. He didn't pine. He didn't wait. He turned away from the window and snatched up his phone again, checking it before he could stop himself. Still nothing.
“Fuck,” he swore, tossing the phone onto the nearby couch. It bounced once before settling into the leather cushions. The action brought him no relief, only a surge of irritation at his own behavior.
The elevator dinged, startling Ilya from his thoughts. The polished metal doors slid open silently, revealing Svetlana's slender figure. She stepped into the penthouse, her eyes taking in his disheveled appearance with one sweeping glance.
“You look terrible,” she said in Russian, pleased about it. "What has you pacing like a caged animal?"
"I didn't invite you," he said, also in Russian.
Svetlana shrugged one elegant shoulder, the sequins on her black dress catching the light as she moved into the room. "The club is packed. I needed a break from the noise." She paused, her nostrils flaring slightly. "And you need company. You're brooding."
"I don't brood," Ilya muttered, though he knew the denial was pointless.
“You forget how long I’ve known you,” she said, switching to English. She made herself comfortable on his couch. She picked up his discarded phone, glancing at the dark screen before placing it on the coffee table. "Still waiting to hear from your hockey trainer?"
Ilya's jaw tightened. "How do you know about that?"
"Helena told me. She and Lucien signed his friend. The chatty one." Svetlana's lips curved into a knowing smile. "They say you gave him your personal card. That you took him to your office. That you're... interested."
The way she said 'interested' made it sound like an accusation. Ilya turned back to the window, unwilling to let her see whatever might be written on his face.
"Mmm." The sound was noncommittal but heavy with implication. "And that's why you're up here alone, staring at your phone instead of downstairs where you have a club full of willing blood donors?"
Ilya didn't answer. The city lights blurred before him as he focused on controlling his expression. Svetlana had always been able to see through him. It was why she was his best friend, why he trusted her, why he loved her and why she irritated him so thoroughly.
"When was the last time you fed?" she asked, her tone shifting to something closer to concern.
"Four days," he replied automatically.
"Too long." She rose from the couch, moving to stand beside him at the window.
Ilya turned to face her, annoyed by the criticism even as he recognized its truth. "I'm fine."
"You're fixated." Svetlana's dark eyes studied him. “You need to feed, Ilya,” she said quietly. “You can’t wait until he signs. If he signs.” Her voice softened. “Feed and think clearly. You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.”
Ilya knew she was right. Four days was pushing it, even for him. The hunger sharpened his senses but dulled his judgment. Perhaps that explained his fixation on Shane—blood hunger playing tricks on his mind.
Svetlana touched his arm lightly. "Not downstairs. The club is too public, and you're too distracted." She reached into her clutch and pulled out her phone. "I'll call Sergei. He's discreet, and his blood is clean."
Ilya shook his head. "I don't want Sergei."
"Then who?" Svetlana's patience was clearly wearing thin. "You need to feed. Tonight."
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed on the coffee table. Both vampires froze, their heightened senses picking up the sound instantly. Svetlana raised an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing at her lips.
Ilya moved to the couch in a blur of motion, snatching up his phone. Shane's name illuminated the screen.
"I'll see myself out," Svetlana murmured, already moving toward the elevator. "Feed, Ilya. Soon. Before you rip half of Montreal apart."
Ilya barely registered her departure, his focus entirely on the message before him.
Can we meet tomorrow?
Ilya's fingers hovered over the keyboard. He typed and deleted four responses before settling on: My place. 8pm. Come to club.
He sent the text, then immediately second-guessed himself. Too commanding? Too presumptuous? Before he could overthink it further, Shane's reply came through:
OK. See you then.
Ilya set the phone down carefully, as if it might shatter under the weight of his anticipation. Tomorrow. He would see Shane tomorrow, and he would know his decision. The hunger that had been gnawing at him intensified, sharpened by excitement and uncertainty.
Svetlana was right. He needed to feed tonight if he was going to be in control tomorrow. Whoever Shane brought to his doorstep—whether it was himself as Ilya's contracted blood provider or merely the signed documents declining the offer—Ilya needed to be at his best.
He picked up his phone again and made a call.
***
Shane stood outside the club at 8pm sharp, the folder holding the contract in his hand. The Ice Palace wouldn’t open for another hour, and still there was a line wrapped around the block of hopefuls wanting to get in. The bouncer recognized Shane immediately, giving him a slight nod as he approached. Sweat beaded at Shane's hairline despite the cool evening air. His hand tightened around the folder, creasing the expensive paper slightly.
"Mr. Hollander," the bouncer said, pulling the door open. "Mr. Rozanov is expecting you."
Shane stepped inside, the sudden shift from street noise to near-silence making his ears ring. The club looked different with the house lights up—more ordinary somehow, its magic diminished without the crowds and pulsing music. Staff members moved efficiently around the space, setting up the bars, arranging furniture, testing lights. A woman with a clipboard directed a team unloading boxes of liquor behind the main bar.
He stood uncertainly in the entrance, unsure where to go. The contract seemed to burn in his hand. He'd read every word at least ten times, examined every clause, researched vampire feeding contracts online until his eyes burned. He had made his decision, but that didn’t mean he was any less freaked out.
“Shane.”
The accented voice came from above. Shane looked up to see Ilya at the top of the staircase that led to the VIP section. Even from a distance, those blue eyes seemed to pin him in place. Ilya wore dark jeans and a simple black sweater that clung to his broad shoulders, more casual than Shane had seen him before. Ilya motioned for him to come up the stairs. Shane's feet carried him forward before his brain had fully processed the command. The folder crinkled in his grip as he climbed the stairs, each step bringing him closer to Ilya, closer to the reality of the decision they had made.
"You came," Ilya said when Shane reached him, as if there had been real doubt.
"I said I would," Shane replied, his heart racing.
Ilya's gaze dropped briefly to the folder in Shane's hands, then back to his face. His expression gave nothing away. "We talk upstairs," he said, turning toward a hallway Shane hadn’t noticed on his previous visit.
Shane followed Ilya down the hallway that led to a singular elevator. Ilya pressed his hand to a panel on the side and the doors opened. He looked back at Shane. “Biometric scan. Only me and few others I trust have hand prints that open elevator.”
The elevator was sleek and mirrored, making Shane hyper-aware of his own nervous appearance. His reflection stared back at him, eyes a little too wide, the contract folder clutched a little too tightly. Next to him, Ilya looked completely at ease, his posture relaxed as he leaned against the wall.
The doors closed silently, and the elevator began to rise. Shane's stomach lurched slightly with the motion—or maybe it was the anticipation of what was coming. He glanced at Ilya's reflection in the mirrored wall, only to find he was already watching him.
"Nervous?" Ilya asked softly.
"Is it that obvious?" Shane attempted a smile that felt more like a grimace.
“Your heart,” Ilya said, tapping his chest. “Very fast. Like a hummingbird.”
Shane turned red. Being so thoroughly exposed was as captivating as it was unnerving. He couldn’t hide his nervousness even if he wanted to. And right now, he really wanted to.
“Sorry,” he mumbled.
“No sorry,” Ilya said, like he was amused Shane still tried. “It’s normal.”
The elevator came to a smooth stop, and the doors slid open to reveal a spacious penthouse that seemed to occupy the entire top floor of the building. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Montreal's skyline, the lights of the city spread out like a carpet of stars beneath them.
"Come," Ilya said, stepping out of the elevator. "Drink?"
Shane followed him into the living area, taking in the minimalist decor. The space was sleek and modern, yet surprisingly warm—dark hardwood floors, leather furniture in rich browns, abstract art in deep reds and blues adorning the walls. A fire crackled in a slate fireplace along one wall, casting dancing shadows across the room.
"Vodka?" Ilya asked, moving toward a bar cart in the corner. "Or something else?"
"Water is fine," Shane said, his mouth suddenly dry. "I, um, don't want to drink if we're going to... you know."
Ilya paused, a crystal tumbler in his hand. He turned to look at Shane, his expression unreadable. “You signed,” he said—soft, like he didn’t want to scare the answer out of him.
Shane glanced down at the folder still clutched in his hand. “I—yeah. I signed it.”
Something flickered across Ilya's face—relief? Satisfaction? It was gone too quickly for Shane to be sure. Ilya set down the tumbler and crossed the room to stand before him.
"May I see?" he asked, holding out his hand.
Shane handed over the folder, his fingers brushing against Ilya's in the process. That same electric jolt shot up his arm, making his breath catch. The folder contained not just the contract but a list of questions he'd prepared—clarifications about scheduling, privacy, what to expect during the first feeding. He'd spent hours crafting them, trying to sound professional rather than terrified.
Ilya opened the folder and flipped through the pages, his eyes scanning the signature at the bottom of the contract. A small smile played at his lips.
“You have questions,” he said, unsurprised.
"A few," Shane admitted. "I wanted to make sure I understood everything."
Ilya gestured toward the couch. "Sit. We talk. Then decide if you still want this."
Shane sank into the leather sofa, surprised by how comfortable it was. Ilya sat beside him, close enough that Shane could feel the coolness radiating from his body, but not so close that they touched.
"First question," Ilya prompted, setting the folder on the coffee table.
Shane cleared his throat. "The contract says three feedings per week. How much blood do you actually take each time? The pamphlets had medical information, but it was all pretty vague."
"Half pint, maximum," Ilya answered promptly. "Less at first. Body needs time to adjust." He studied Shane's face. "EFP has strict limits. I am more careful than requirements."
"And recovery time?" Shane asked. "I work with athletes. I need to be able to focus, to have enough energy to help them."
"You will feel tired first few times," Ilya acknowledged. "Maybe light-headed. But body adapts quickly. After first week, most humans notice no difference." He leaned forward slightly. "I schedule feedings to minimize impact on your work. Late evenings, perhaps. After practice."
Shane nodded, his anxiety easing slightly at Ilya's careful consideration. "And what about..." he hesitated, unsure how to phrase his next question delicately. "The contract mentioned 'mutual satisfaction.' What exactly does that mean?"
Ilya's lips curved into a small smile. "It means whatever you want it to mean." He studied Shane's face. "Feeding creates... connection. Intimacy. Some enjoy this, want more. Some don’t." His eyes held Shane's. "Your choice, always."
Shane swallowed hard. He'd read enough online to know that feeding could be intensely pleasurable for both parties, that many contracts evolved to include sexual components. The thought sent heat curling through his body.
"We start simple," Ilya continued, his voice gentle. "See how you respond. No pressure for more."
Shane nodded, grateful for Ilya's understanding. "When would we start?"
"Tonight, if you are ready." Ilya's eyes searched his face. "Or we can wait. Your choice."
Shane took a deep breath. He'd come here prepared for this, had spent days thinking about it, imagining it. And yet, now that the moment was here, his heart hammered against his ribs like it wanted to escape.
"Tonight is fine," he heard himself say. "Better to just... get it over with."
“Get it over with,” Ilya repeated, mouth twitching. “You say that, but your pulse says something else.”
Shane felt his face heat. "Sorry, I didn't mean—"
"Is fine," Ilya interrupted, waving away the apology. "Understand what you mean." He rose from the couch with that fluid grace that still caught Shane off guard. "Water first. Then we begin."
He moved to the kitchen area, separated from the living room by a sleek island counter. Shane watched as Ilya filled a glass with water, his movements precise. There was something mesmerizing about the way he moved—like a predator, but one that had learned to move among prey without startling them.
Ilya returned with the water, handing it to Shane. Their fingers brushed again, and Shane nearly spilled the glass. He drank deeply, the cool liquid soothing his parched throat.
"Hydration important," Ilya said, sitting beside him again. "Helps body recover faster."
Shane set the empty glass on the coffee table. "So, how do we...” God, he felt so awkward and stupid. "I—I've never done this before."
Ilya's expression softened. "We go slow. First time is always most difficult." He moved closer on the sofa, the leather creaking softly beneath his weight. "Most comfortable if you sit like this, back against arm of sofa."
Shane shifted position, leaning against the arm of the couch as instructed. His heart hammered so loudly he was certain Ilya could hear it across the room, let alone sitting right next to him.
"Roll up sleeve," Ilya said gently.
Shane's fingers trembled slightly as he rolled the sleeve of his shirt up past his elbow, exposing the skin of his forearm. He was muscular so the veins stood out prominently against his skin, blue traceries mapping the paths of his blood. Ilya's blood. For the next six months at least.
Ilya reached out slowly, giving Shane time to pull away if he wanted. When he didn't, Ilya's cool fingers wrapped around his wrist, the touch startlingly intimate. Shane's pulse jumped beneath Ilya's thumb.
"Relax," Ilya murmured. "Will hurt less if you are not so tense."
Shane tried to steady his breathing, focusing on the sensation of Ilya's touch rather than what was about to happen. "Sorry, I just—this is all new."
"I know." Ilya's eyes met his, those impossible blue depths holding him steady. "Trust me, yes? I take care of you."
The words shouldn't have been as comforting as they were. Shane nodded, unable to look away from Ilya's gaze. Ilya leaned forward, his cool breath fanning across Shane's skin. Shane closed his eyes, bracing for what was coming. His heart hammered so hard it felt like it might crack his ribs.
"Look at me," Ilya said softly. When Shane opened his eyes, he found Ilya watching him intently. "I want to see your eyes. Know if it's too much."
Shane nodded, unable to look away from that piercing blue gaze. Ilya lifted Shane's wrist to his mouth, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin there. The touch was so light that Shane might have imagined it if not for the goosebumps that raced up his arm.
Ilya's tongue darted out, tasting his skin, and Shane's breath hitched. The sensation was strange but not unpleasant—cool and wet.
"Ready?" Ilya asked, his eyes darkening.
Shane swallowed hard and nodded. "Ready."
The first press of fangs into his skin was sharper than Shane had expected—a bright, hot flare of pain that made him gasp. His instinct was to pull away, to protect himself from the invasion, but Ilya's grip tightened slightly, holding him in place.
"Breathe," Ilya whispered against his skin.
Shane forced himself to take deep breaths, focusing on the sensation. The initial sting began to fade, replaced by a strange warmth that spread from the puncture site up his arm. It was uncomfortable but not unbearable—like the burn after a hard workout, his body protesting but also somehow welcoming the strain.
Then Ilya began to drink, and everything changed.
The first pull of blood from his veins sent a shock wave through Shane's system—not pain but something else entirely. A warm, liquid heat that flowed from his wrist to his chest, pooling low in his belly, hardening his cock. The second pull was stronger, and Shane couldn't stop the small sound that escaped his throat, a soft, broken sound he didn’t recognize as his own. Shane's free hand instinctively gripped Ilya's shoulder, fingers digging into the firm muscle beneath the soft sweater. He hadn't expected this—this rush of heat, this overwhelming sensation that was part pleasure, part surrender.
Each pull sent waves of pleasure radiating through his body. His skin felt hypersensitive, every nerve ending alive and crackling with energy. The room around him blurred at the edges, his focus narrowing to the cool pressure of Ilya's mouth against his skin, the gentle but insistent tug as he fed.
Ilya's eyes never left his face, watching his reactions with an intensity that should have been daunting but instead felt oddly intimate. Shane couldn't look away from those eyes, now darkened with something primal. The connection between them felt tangible, as if Ilya was taking more than just his blood—as if something essential was flowing between them, creating a bond that transcended the physical.
"Fuck," Shane whispered, his head falling back against the arm of the sofa as another wave of pleasure crashed through him. His cock strained against his jeans, the pressure almost painful. He should have been embarrassed by his body's response, but he was beyond that now, beyond thinking clearly at all.
Ilya made a low sound against his skin—approval or hunger or both—and the vibration sent another jolt straight to Shane's groin. He shifted on the couch, trying to ease the growing discomfort of his arousal, but the movement only intensified the sensations.
Time seemed to stretch and contract. Shane had no idea how long they'd been like this—seconds or minutes or hours. The world had narrowed to this point of connection, this exchange that felt both sacred and profoundly carnal.
When Ilya finally withdrew, his tongue lapping gently at the puncture wounds to seal them, Shane felt the loss like a physical ache. His body hummed with unfulfilled need, his breath coming in short, shallow pants. He now understood why sex was added to contracts.
“Perfect,” Ilya murmured, his voice rough with something Shane recognized as desire.
Shane stared at him, dazed. The room seemed to spin slightly, whether from blood loss or arousal, he couldn't tell. The hardness between his legs was obvious and impossible to hide. Part of him wanted to run from the intensity, the pleasure. But the other part of him wanted more, more of Ilya.
"You okay?" Ilya asked, his thumb stroking gently over the puncture marks on Shane's wrist. The touch sent another wave of pleasure through him, making him shiver.
Shane nodded, not trusting his voice. His body felt both heavy and weightless, anchored only by Ilya's touch. The room tilted slightly when he moved his head.
"Dizzy?" Ilya's eyes narrowed with concern.
"A little," Shane admitted, his voice sounding distant to his own ears. "I didn't expect it to feel so..." He trailed off, unable to find the right words.
Ilya's lips curved into a small smile, a hint of fang still visible. There was a flush to his pale skin that hadn't been there before, a vitality that made him seem almost human. Almost.
“Intense,” Ilya said. His gaze dropped briefly to the obvious bulge in Shane's jeans before returning to his face.
Shane felt heat rush to his cheeks. He should have been mortified, but he was too caught in the afterglow of whatever had just happened to feel proper embarrassment. "Is it always like that?"
Ilya shook his head. “No. Depends on person.” He leaned in closer to Shane and Shane felt the overpowering urge to kiss him. “You like me.” He glanced pointedly at Shane’s reaction. Then he leaned back.
“I get orange juice and snacks.” Ilya released his wrist, fingers lingering. He rose from the couch. “Stay. Rest.”
Shane watched as Ilya crossed to the kitchen, his movements still carrying that predatory grace even as he performed the mundane task of opening the refrigerator. The room still felt like it was gently spinning, his body heavy and light at the same time. He lifted his wrist, examining the two small puncture marks. They were already healing, the skin around them slightly raised but not bruised or bloody as he'd expected. Just two perfect little dots—evidence of what had just happened between them.
The sensations lingering in his body were unlike anything he'd experienced before. Not quite like being drunk or high (not that he'd done much of either), but something entirely different—a languorous warmth that seemed to pulse in time with his heartbeat, concentrated most intensely where Ilya had fed but radiating outward to every extremity.
And then there was the arousal. Shane shifted uncomfortably on the couch, his erection still straining against his jeans. The pamphlets had mentioned "physiological responses" in clinical terms, but nothing had prepared him for the intensity of his reaction. He'd gotten hard the moment Ilya's fangs had pierced his skin, and even now, minutes later, the ache hadn't subsided.
Ilya returned with a glass of orange juice and a plate of cheese, crackers, and sliced apples. He set them on the coffee table in front of Shane.
"Eat," he instructed, sitting down beside him again. "Sugar helps. Protein too."
Shane reached for the juice first, surprised by how thirsty he suddenly felt. The sweet-tart liquid was heaven against his tongue, and he drained half the glass before coming up for air.
"How much did you take?" he asked, his voice sounding steadier than he expected.
"Less than half pint," Ilya replied, watching him carefully. "Very small amount for first time. Will increase gradually as your body adjusts."
Shane nodded, reaching for a slice of apple. The fruit tasted impossibly sweet and crisp, his senses heightened in the aftermath of the feeding. "It felt like more."
Shane tried to focus on eating, but it was difficult with Ilya so close, with the memory of what had just happened between them still so vivid. He felt raw, exposed—as if Ilya could see right through him now that he'd tasted his blood.
"What... what was it like for you?” He didn’t know why he wanted to know. For Ilya, it had probably been nothing, something he had been doing for so long, it was just routine. He didn’t understand why that thought made his chest ache.
Ilya smiled slightly, his knuckles grazing over the freckles on Shane’s cheeks. The touch sent another flutter to Shane’s lower belly. “You don’t want to know.”
“I do,” Shane said softly.
“I wanted to keep going. Your blood is so sweet. So complex. I wanted to bite your neck, your inner thighs.” Ilya's gaze dropped—neck, throat, then lower like he was deliberately not naming it. “Wanted to hear you make more of those sounds. Where I could touch, lick, kiss, suck, to make them louder. You sounded so…beautiful…”
Shane’s breath caught, and heat rushed through his body. A trembling started somewhere deep inside him, radiating outward until his fingers shook against the glass he was holding. He set it down hastily before he could spill it.
“Oh. I—” He didn’t know what to say. Nothing seemed adequate for the storm of emotions churning inside him. The naked hunger in Ilya’s eyes told him he meant every word. He once again felt the urge to run, and the desire to stay.
“Are you scared now?” Ilya asked. He seemed worried about Shane’s answer.
Shane swallowed hard. “No. I—I wanted to know.” It was so hard to think with Ilya’s eyes on him and the erection that refused to disappear in his pants.
The corner of Ilya's mouth quirked upward. He reached out, his cool fingers tracing the line of Shane's jaw with exquisite gentleness. The touch sent another wave of pleasure through him, making his still-hard cock throb painfully against his zipper. He had to calm down. This was just supposed to be business. Clinical, a mutual exchange. Nothing more.
"You are very responsive," Ilya murmured, his thumb brushing over Shane's bottom lip. "Makes it difficult to be... restrained."
Shane's tongue darted out instinctively to wet his lips, accidentally grazing Ilya's thumb in the process. The vampire's eyes darkened further, pupils expanding until only a thin ring of blue remained.
“I—” Shane started, then stopped. His thoughts felt sluggish, his body heavy with desire he’d never experienced before. He’d been with other people, dated other people. But he wasn’t drawn to them like Ilya. He wanted Ilya to touch him, to kiss him, to bite him again—anything to recapture that moment of perfect connection.
Suddenly, Ilya withdrew his hand slowly, creating space between them. “You should go,” he said firmly.
“But I—”
“First time is overwhelming. You will make decisions you regret.”
The loss of contact left Shane feeling strangely bereft. Part of him wanted to reach out, to pull Ilya back, to surrender to the intensity of whatever was happening between them. But another part—the rational, careful part that had served him well his entire life—knew Ilya was right.
Shane exhaled, nodding slowly. The room still spun slightly, but clarity was beginning to return. "You're right. I should go."
He reached for another piece of apple, trying to ground himself with the simple act of eating. The sweet juice burst on his tongue, almost painfully vivid. Everything felt heightened—the texture of the leather beneath him, the sound of Ilya's breathing, the metallic scent of blood.
"Finish juice first," Ilya said, his voice gentler now. "Then I call car for you."
Shane drained the glass, feeling the sugar hit his system. The dizziness receded further, though the strange, floating sensation remained. He glanced at his wrist again, at the two small marks that were already healing. Evidence that this wasn't a dream, that he'd actually done this—offered his blood to a vampire. To Ilya.
"What happens now?" Shane asked, setting the empty glass down. "I mean, when do we... when is the next time?"
"Two days," Ilya replied. "Your body needs time to recover. I text you, we arrange meeting."
Shane nodded, trying to imagine incorporating this new ritual into his life. Feeding sessions with Ilya three times a week. The thought sent another shiver through him, part anticipation and part lingering arousal.
Ilya rose from the couch, extending a hand to help Shane up. "Come. Car will be waiting."
Shane accepted the hand, allowing Ilya to pull him to his feet. The sudden change in position made the room tilt alarmingly, and he swayed slightly. Ilya's arm wrapped around his waist, steadying him. The contact was brief but electric, Ilya's strength evident in how easily he supported Shane's weight.
"Careful," Ilya murmured, his breath cool against Shane's ear.
"I'm okay," Shane insisted, though he didn't pull away immediately. The solid presence of Ilya beside him was reassuring in a way he hadn't expected. "Just stood up too fast."
Ilya guided him toward the elevator, his hand remaining at the small of Shane's back. The touch felt possessive, though Shane tried not to read too much into it. This was a contract. A business arrangement. Nothing more.
The elevator ride down was silent, the air between them charged with something Shane couldn't quite name. He snuck glances at Ilya marveling in how attractive he was, beautiful, solid, like marble statue. He looked away mentally yelling at his body to calm down. Everything was too sensitive, including his thoughts. He needed to go lay down.
When the doors opened, Ilya led him through a private exit that bypassed the main club. A sleek black car idled at the curb, its driver standing at attention beside the rear door.
"This will take you home," Ilya said, his hand still at Shane's back. "Text me when you arrive safely."
Shane nodded, suddenly reluctant to leave despite knowing it was the right decision. "Thank you. For... everything."
Ilya's eyes softened. “Good night, Shane.”
Shane watched Ilya's lips form his name, the sound of it somehow different in that accented voice, like it was being carved into something precious. The cool night air hit his face as the driver opened the car door.
"Good night," Shane said, sliding into the backseat of the car.
As the vehicle pulled away from the curb, Shane twisted to look back through the tinted window. Ilya stood perfectly still on the sidewalk, watching the car depart, his tall figure illuminated by the blue lights of the club entrance. Something about the sight made Shane’s chest ache in a way he didn’t have words for yet.
It started with a sound.
A low hum beneath the cliffs. A pull in their chests. A pool that shimmered with moonlight and memory.
Something ancient has stirred—and now, three girls are caught in the tide of something vast, something old, something that doesn’t want to let them go.
Saltwater sings in their veins. And the surface?
It's not home anymore.
