Iranian-Azerbaijani rug (ca. 1965) celebrating the successes of Soviet space travel.

Designed by Jafar Mujiri, the rug seems to have been commissioned by Iran's communist Tudeh Party to mark the anniversary of the establishment of the Soviet-backed Azerbaijan People's Government in Iranian Azerbaijan in 1945 (dissolved in 1946).

The rug shows a cosmonaut flying to space from Moscow, with rockets and satellites zooming around him. The border is decorated with a portrait of Lenin as well as portraits of various cosmonauts including Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, Gherman Titov and others.

In any case, because of my fixation, I was subjected to harassment.

I’m uncertain whether the person in question even was aware of Gagarin.

More importantly, someone in the country where I live has been hurling hurtful words at me and harassing me solely because of my fictional works and the way I express my emotions…

It stems less from Gagarin himself and focuses instead on why I’d chosen to write it, and the subject matter itself.

I’d particularly prefer to avoid causing further trouble by revealing the details, especially in public.

Even now, I’m trying to push the whole thing straight out of my mind.

No, no, since finishing that last piece, I’ve been overcome by a dreadful unease. I’m terrified everyone will think I’m a bit odd. I’m disgusted with myself for feeling this way. "As long as you’re happy" what does it really matter? Even thinking that offers little solace. Have I been feeling guilty towards him? Yet not exactly. This delusion of mine is very much mortifying, I’ve spent hours filled with self-loathing. That said, it likely stems from the fact I’ve only clocked up about an hour and a half of sleep over the last two days (day and night combined). If the truth were out, my friends couldn’t possibly conceive of me picturing him in this way.

It’s difficult to convey everything. I’m a worthless piece of humanity. I detest my own emotions. I’m not entitled to anything. Go ahead and criticise me all you like.
