you know, maybe I'm wrong, but my interpretation of Anakin/Vader and Redeemed Anakin is that he pretty much is aware he's terrible. He pretty much thinks of himself as a monster even before becoming Vader, he considers himself one as soon as he had to leave Shmi to survive as a slave alone while he got to become The Chosen One and travel the stars (his basic understanding of love is self-sacrifice), he knows the tusken massacre was bad, he knows murdering disarmed Dooku was bad; he knew turning against the jedi and helping Palpatine was bad; he's extremelly self aware of his violence and hates himself for it.
I think it's easy to think of him as nonchalant or as sort of a shameless dick about it all because his General At War Persona was to be jokey and pretend he's having fun. He's very confident on his ability for Murder (tm), he (tragically) became one of the Best general jedis in the order by becoming good at murder, he's useful when he's being murderous at the right people; so he has no doubts on his abilities on this regard; that doesn't mean he isn't aware of how fucked up and cruel it is, but he keeps doing it, and it's all he knows; he was born in violence, raised in violence, taught to yield a extremelly dangerous weapon, groomed into violence, rewarded for violence, cheered for violence, with Ahsoka then he had to teach violence, and then violence just became something that ran in his blood, it came to him easily, too easily because he was never given the means to deal with such a extreme hyperviolent paradigm. So yep, he knows he's good at murder and little self-preservation.
And he probably despised himself for it, he saw himself as less than a being with human rights, he saw himself as a weapon and he hated not being seen as a person, and at some point he became apathic about it, the fight left him as soon as he had no future with a family. As Vader his hate and anger is just cold fury, is mostly apathy and a void of emotions, there's just pain and self-disgust and regret and old anger, there's not even trying to be something else anymore, it's all he's ever been good at and all he's being asked to do.
So redeemed Anakin (which canonically just means Ghost Anakin lmao) acting oblivious or playing the dumb or victim card it's just something I can't even imagine him to do; like Anakin is aware of being violent and messed up and Bad, but he is completely unable to concieve the idea of having been a victim because besides violence, Anakin's other big trait is that he never ever processes trauma and he horrifically has a history of blaming himself instead of the people who owned him.
This guy, when he was at his best as a Jedi, was pathologically prone to suicidal missions even when it wasn't a necessity, he thinks he's an asset, a means for his superiors to impose their stance and chose to own it, instead of blaming his superiors he just hates himself because he can't stop pathetically reliving when he left his mom behind, when he carried her corpse, when he retaliated against even innocents including kids, when he hurt Padmé, all the times he failed, and the he lived in his personal, fitly created just for him, inferno and had no plans to escape it until one certain sunshine farmer showed up, and all because he thinks he deserves the torture and the abuse and being owned because he's just good at murder and nothing else.
So yeah, no one probably hates him more than himself. Someone could tell Ghost Anakin he's a monster, the worst thing that ever happened in the galaxy and he would say "Yes." And no attempts at arguing or whatsoever, his dignity couldn't be lower if he tried, he would half-heartly agree if someone like Luke said the emperor did him wrong by, y'know, torture him? But then he would also say something like "Well, yes, but cruelty is the way of the Sith, what else could be expected", he's just terribly messed up and couldn't stop himself from defending, at least a little, his literal groomer and abuser and master, and he certainly won't expect forgiveness, like,,,,at all. He can, and will, make excuses for people directly hurting him, but he also would retaliate in terrible ways against anyone, guilty or not, if it meant doing it for someone he cared about.
So Anakin is just...used to being used, and falls easily into being used because it's what he knows best, freedom feels useless and uncertain after he lost padmé.
It's an increíble vicious circle: He worked himself hard to be useful because being useful it's what makes people like him and a means of survival, he then hates himself for being just useful and loosing his personhood, and because he hates himself and thinks he doesn't deserve any sort of...human rights, he keeps on being a mere weapon, an object, but what a good and expensive weapon at least, repeat.
So nope, this guy would be completely unable to even dare to play the victim or excuse himself, even less act as if he doesn't understand he did wrong.
here is a fun little star wars scenario that has been pinging around inside my head like a screensaver:
so let’s say there’s some very zealous, very low-ranking fresh young Imperial officer on duty the day they take the Senator from Alderaan into custody.
and he is very very nervous because a) he’s been here for like a week and b) none of that week required him to be in a room with Darth Vader. which he now is. so he is trying to focus very very hard on Doing Everything Exactly According To Protocol, as a means of not focusing on the seven-foot evil wizard standing fifteen feet away.
and part of the protocol for processing new prisoners is to make a new file for them in the prisoner database, and enter all their biographical details and vital statistics and a gene sample and their known associates and the nature of their terrible crimes against the Empire and so on. which he does! very meticulously!
except the computer keeps throwing an error message. the stupid thing keeps beeping at him, this awful grating little noise that makes his shoulders ratchet up tighter and tighter every time it honks at him, and he can’t fix it and Darth Vader is right over there—
except oh god oh fuck the beeping noise must be annoying Darth Vader, too, because he’s coming over here and our poor junior officer is convinced he’s going to die before he even lives long enough to send his first paycheck home to his poor widowed mother —
he stammers out an apology. Vader just stares at him. he swears he’ll figure out the problem right away, sir, it’s probably a bug in the system, it’s just that for some silly reason it keeps saying this gene sample doesn’t match the one on file for the Senator so he can’t get her logged as a new prisoner just yet —
“Dismissed,” says Vader. the poor kid flees, gratefully.
Vader considers the matter. in fact, his underling was correct: the gene sample, which he saw taken through his very own helmet lenses, does not match the official record of Senator Leia Organa, heir to the throne of Alderaan. so: perhaps the sample on record was falsified. not impossible, but very, very difficult. and ordinarily a crime attempted by the lowly and desperate. he cannot see any need for it, in the daughter of a queen.
another possibility presents itself. Alderaan has no history of using royal doubles, as some worlds do. but Bail Organa has worked closely with royal houses where the practice is long-established. perhaps he was inspired. perhaps the girl they captured is not Leia Organa at all.
Vader runs the gene sample against the ship’s database. it is woefully incomplete, of course, containing only a fraction of the Empire’s billions of citizens: the ship’s own complement, a selection of known criminals and Rebels they might encounter, high-ranking officials whose identity must be confirmed should the Emperor require their presence. unlikely that this girl, whoever she is, would have a record here, or even a partial match—
the computer beeps at him. it’s a cheerful beep, this time, not the error message that stymied the junior officer. the computer reports that the gene sample is a partial match for Pooja Naberrie, the Senator from Naboo. they are, with eighty-nine percent probability, first cousins.
and Vader just. kind of stands there. for a minute.
when he goes to Leia’s cell, there’s no interrogation droid with him. he goes in. he shuts the door behind him. he stands there, silent, for frankly a worryingly long time, until Leia has run through her entire stockpile of “how dare you, I’m a member of the Senate on a humanitarian mission” and “whatever you want, you can’t possibly think I would be of any help” and “well, if you’re going to interrogate me, get on with it already” and “are you even listening to me?” and falls silent herself.
Vader has been listening to her. he has also been listening to the Force, which seems to think that she’s not lying. obviously the humanitarian mission part is bullshit, that goes without saying. but the “I’m Senator Leia Organa” parts and the “I won’t help you” parts? yeah. he searched his feelings. he knows them to be true. the Force is singing in his head, bright and clear, in a way it hasn’t for nearly twenty years.
there’s still Tarkin to deal with, though. Vader turns and leaves the cell without a word.
Tarkin wants to blow up Alderaan. this is unacceptable, obviously, and Vader forbids it on the grounds that the Queen and the Viceroy possess vital intelligence, not disclosed to their daughter, that must be acquired. said intelligence being, not that he’s saying this out loud, how the fuck Bail got his hands on his daughter, and who else knows about it.
“the fate of the galaxy rests on it,” is what he does say out loud. from the way the Force harmonizes with his words, that might even be true.
so the Death Star just. parks there. in an incredibly threatening orbit around the planet. they issue a demand that the Organas surrender themselves, or else, but apparently the happy couple just left for a low-tech weekend retreat in the mountains, what awful timing, they’re sending someone to fetch them right away. Vader shuts himself up in his quarters, to seethe and watch the surveillance feed from Leia’s cell. he’s not really paying attention to much else.
and it’s not like a random freighter getting tractored in for being an incredibly obvious smuggling vessel is the kind of thing you’d alert Darth Vader over, anyway.
so he’s still sitting there, one great big thought filling up his whole entire head, watching Leia take a frustration nap, when her cell door opens.
and a trooper comes in.
and the trooper takes off his helmet.
and he says, “I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to rescue you.”

Okay, so. Star Wars has all these concepts that weirdo New Left boomer George Lucas tosses in there but because of storyteller limitations it would kill the plot to fully explain them all, so later writers have to come in for the spin-off materials and bat clean-up to fully explain all this crazy crap. And I would like to talk about something that made me actively angry at first, but which I now adore. And that is the Naboo.
So much about Naboo culture is infuriating from a logical standpoint. They have a queen, okay. A constitutionally elected queen? Weird, okay. Don't know why they'd do that but... She's FOURTEEN? Excuse me? Is it a ceremonial thing or, oh no it's not? Legit head of state? Why does she dress like that? Why does she talk like that? I'm so tired.
Here's the explainer. Let me go cook.
There's this joke in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where the last living human goes back in time and finds out humans aren't actually from Earth, but an alien culture that tricked all the middle managers, pedantic weirdos, and other infuriating folk into getting in a space arc which they gave the wrong evacuation coordinates to simply get rid of them. The Naboo are like this but they're all artists and poets and hippies, but like classy ones. They fled their home planet during a war and crash landed on Naboo, then did a colonism to the Gungans because, hey, they were fleeing a war and it was do or die. This spiritual rot in their creation story is later rectified by Padmé. But it's super important to their cultural psychology. They're hippies, but will subjugate if needed. They are "peaceful" but I guarantee you every single one of them has a tiny extremely shiny pistol up their sleeve and they will draw down on you if backed against a wall.
The scene that I think says it all is at the end of Phantom Menace when Padmé is surrounded by Nute Gunray and his droids, they've got her dead to rights, but Sabé her double creates a distraction so the queen can make it to her throne. This one piece of furniture is the Naboo in a nutshell. It's richly carved with artistic details, it has two seats to the side so the queen's handmaidens can read the lips of people in the back of the room and use hand signals to communicate with the queen while she can remain focused mostly on who is speaking to her. It is hundreds of years old. And it has a secret compartment in the armrest that is FULL OF GUNS. Layers of artistic opulence hiding their true intentions.
The Naboo were created to be backwards compatible with Princess Leia. They're compassionate pacifists, but they will shot you if needed.
Why do they elect teenage royalty? It's a little creepy. It's giving "age of consent is emotional maturity". It makes no sense.
The explanation they give outsiders is they want youthful idealism untainted by cynicism. What they don't tell you is that they take kids with stated interest in politics and put them in an advanced highly competitive Leadership Academy which is like Model UN mixed with Battle Royale. Well, they don't kill each other but it's intense. It's like what the clones went though just all diplomacy training and tea ceremonies all the time. Which is crazy but so Naboo.
Oh, and all the delegates for the royalty election run using pseudonyms for security. Imagine voting for the head of state but you can't run a background check. It's so crazy.
Why does Padmé dress like that? Well, fashion is one of Naboo's major industries so it's like she's wearing the entire Fall line catalog at once. To advertise not only the talent of her people, but to show how much they favor her. BUT that dress has multiple layers of padding and resin armor. And aforementioned spots for those little silver blasters. And it breaks up her silhouette making her harder to shoot. And it's so elaborate you pay more attention to the crazy dress and not if the person wearing it is really the queen or a decoy. Everything about Naboo is like this.
Queen Amidala has that weird accent while Padmé does not. Because all her handmaidens helped create the accent together so they all can imitate it. It's like if you gave girls at a rowdy sleepover the job of federal counterintelligence. That's what they came up with.
The handmaidens wear colorful identical clothes so you can't tell them apart, hoods to partially conceal their identity, and they don't wear the queen's fancy makeup. So one of them can be the queen and spy on people in the audience. Because the Naboo don't trust shit for shit.
Their public face is so silly to hide all the truly weird shit they do behind the scenes.
They use their reputation as artist hippies to conceal multiple layers of subterfuge and disguise their methods of self defense and assuage their paranoia due to wartime trauma and their disturbing colonial past. All of them are completely off their rocker even by Star Wars standards. And I love them so much. They put on a show so everyone thinks they have them figured out but what they have going on is far more weirder and more sinister than meets the eye. You know how catty, neurotic, and competitive art school students stereotypically are? Yeah, planet art student. Love them!
There you go, @charmwasjess
honestly this goes further than anything else to explain why padme heard this bonkers greasy teenage anakin confess to her that he wiped out the entire village of native people who killed his mother, and padme (ostensibly our conscience) (actually a valedictorian of the naboo political school of move fast break things and look gorgeous doing it) was just like '👍'
also Darth Sidious is from there, too, so you can interpret him as to some extent the intersection point of everything weird about the Naboo and, uh, everything about the Sith.
like...a planet destroying laser is pretty Sith Lord, and having a Galactic Empire is classically Sith, but faking your way into being Emperor via elaborate indirect election fraud and a whole faked-up proxy war, and mounting your hyperspace-capable space laser on a deeply gratuitous whole-ass artificial moon? there's distinct traces of Naboo aesthetic sensibility showing through there.
also he hates his home planet, which we may assume is why after becoming emperor and having no more reason to please anybody but himself, he wore nothing but an ankle-length hoodie for twenty-five years.

when you show up to the met gala you should immediately be faced with a panel of fashion experts and art historians before you even get to the red carpet and you have to explain your outfit choice and why it is on theme for that year’s event like you are defending a phd and if you can’t produce a coherent defence they turn you away at the door and the people of manhattan are allowed and encouraged to throw rotten produce at you as you get back into your car in shame
Some of the discourse around the Game Changers books comes across as so pseudo intellectual to me, and all my issues with the various, aggressive discourse online has everything to do with this. These books are not hobbit or god of small things; these books are romance. That doesn't mean they get away with bad writing or that the standards for critique are, for some blasted reason, lower—it means the standards for critique are different. The readers of this genre are not looking for intellectual insight or a dissection of social tragedies; they're looking for compelling main characters with good romantic, and in some cases, sexual chemistry. They're looking for tension, resolution, and a happy ending. The romance between characters is the story. Everything else that exists in this world—the universe of the story, discrimination, grief, other characters, mental health issues—are props to affect the relationship between the characters. As long as a romance novel reads like a compelling romance, the writing style can be anything. Because all the skill, all the muscle work, lies in the construction of the characters and the romance between them. That's all it takes to make a romance novel people want to read.
This is not easy to do at all. It's very difficult to create characters that stand out as new. Fanfic writers borrow aspects of original characters and often create less complex versions of them in their own romance fics, but creating interesting original characters, suited especially for romance, takes incredible skill. You see a lot of this in shows like bridgerton, for example, where most of the characters in the show are derived from their originals and have the hallmarks of complexity but not the depth. Or After, where the characters are based on Harry Styles and come across as caricature-ish.
One of the reasons Heated Rivalry was famous even within the MM romance genre (and I've read a ton of books within this genre), is because of the characters. They're incredibly well constructed and their romance is very believable. This is a good romance novel; it fulfills it's intention. Everything else in this book is a prop for the romance, and, again, it's a romance book! It's not an academic textbook on gay sex and mental health disorders!
However people seem to treat it as such. Calling the books too trashy for their taste or that Jacob 'elevates' the books—Jacob's adaptation is successful because he stayed as true as he could to the source material, because, guess what, he is a romance reader and understands what makes a romance story work. The reason you like his show, additionally, is because it's beautiful to look at. The cinematographer and the editor did a wonderful job as well. And of course, the actors get all their flowers. But it's still romance! So you are consuming romance, and sneering at the creators for creating romance as a lesser artform?
It frustrates me additionally that the readers of these books are put down as stupid or as seeking cheap art. Firstly, people who read romance also read other genres. Secondly, people who read romance understand that they're reading romance and have defined expectations for them in most cases. If they consumed romance as a form of 'cheap art' due to lacking standards, ALL romance books to ever exist would be popular. Not saying bad romance novels don't get popular, they do, as in any genre. My point being, people judge a good romance differently than how they'd judge a good murder mystery, because the expectations are different. And Heated Rivalry, and the Long Game are good romance books. Otherwise, so many talented people wouldn't have rallied around it to bring it to screen while repeatedly emphasizing that the key to success was staying true to the source material.
everyone saying they wanted ilya to sniff shane’s boxers after shane threw them at him but i am a it's perfect that he didn't truther. because ilya was fighting for his fuckin life clinging to the threadbare control he had in that moment. he told shane to get on the bed (shane did), he told shane to touch himself and show off because ilya wanted to watch (shane did!!!!!) and shane continued even after ilya continued to rile him up one way or another: no, you're not getting vodka; no, you give me a show, hollander; hey let me remind you i won the cup and you didn't. he was in control! shane was following orders so beautifully. but then—but then, shane snaps, its, all things considered, light-hearted and teasing, he takes off his underwear grinning and just full on yeets them at ilya. he even hits his glass and almost spills the vodka. he challenged the control, even shane himself didn't know or realize. and if ilya had sniffed them. well. that would've destroyed the whole picture he was trying so hard to paint. him just dropping the boxers (t'was sexy as hell y'all) was a show, look at me, i don't care, i have the upper hand. do you think you have anything on me? while inside he was gnawing through steel bars because shane had taken him by surprise again with that little move. and ilya, my baby boy, he knew he had no control, not really. but he fought tooth and nail to make it look like he had. because he could not allow himself to admit that he hadn't, because that would mean admitting to something else that he wasn't ready for.
obviously there’s nothing morally wrong with the projectionist lens through which a large portion of fandom operates but it does get kind of tiring to constantly feel like. hey guys what if we stopped talking about ourselves and instead talked about the character

siriusxmhits1: asking all the important questions 🫡 🇵🇰 🇮🇳
[01.04.26].
New interpretation of Tuna Meltdown that I'm rotating is that Shane heard Ilya say Shane, thought oh thank God this is real, said Ilya, remembered that Ilya just sat on this same couch and talked about women for ten minutes, realized that he fucked it up AGAIN, just like Vegas 1.0 and just like Sochi, and immediately decided that he had to yeet himself completely out of the room before Ilya started saying We Are Not Anything Hollander again. For a third time. Oops sorry about that but I know better! I will see MYSELF out! And then following the established pattern he just assumes that there will be anywhere between six months and two years of radio silence. And he copes with that by hurting himself with heterosexuality. Nobody's ever done it the way Shane Hollander is doing it (Badly)
I get why Shane calling Ilya "sir" is a big thing in the Heated Rivalry fandom. I both understand that it's something people find hot in a D/s dynamic and why people specifically think it makes sense for them but, honestly, those boys went years being unable to say each other's first names. Years of Rozanovs and Hollanders that tried to cover up their desperation for one another. Years of masking the depth of their desire in names that lent them fabricated distance, hoping it would provide cover from the aching vulnerability their connection inspired. So, in my humble opinion, being able to call him Ilya and being able to hear his first name from Shane's lips remains infinitely hotter to them.

I am a fan of the dynamic where there's no leak and Shane moves to the Cens of his own accord and then Shane and Ilya never come out exactly but they just live openly and all these dumbass hockey players are just like
"Oh yeah they're just like that. They live together and room together and vacation together and get mad if they're separated on the bench. And they kiss in the locker room sometimes but it's you know. They're joking around. Good guys. Gay? Well---no I don't think so. I mean that's weird. Roz is a pussy hound. I mean I've never seen him with a woman but you know he is. Anyway Hollander had that whole thing with Rose Landry and he still talks about her, I think he's still hung up on her. Poor guy. I did walk in on Hollander sleeping on Roz's lap the other day but they were just getting in sync for power play you know? You reporters always want to make everything gay it's so weird. What do you mean 'why do they kiss so much' they're the top goal scoring duo in the league"
i’m blocking out the @ in case they don’t want to be blasted on the tumblr jumbotron but this was posted by someone at a jacob q&a today :)
look sorry this quote is explicitly designed to derail my evening in favor of running my mouth: the above exposes one of the fundamental gaps in the logic of a guard dog ilya narrative to me. i think depending on how you draw the lines around book and show canon there are arguments to be made for ilya being a pleasure dom rather than one particularly interested in degradation and pain. fine; whatever. but even when shane is at his most textually demanding, what he asks for is amorphous: ilya asks what he wants and shane says i want...you. that's not a choice or a direction. (not for nothing it is also a completely archetypal 'idk man, i thought it was your job to figure it out' sub's deflection.)
there seems to be this idea that shane has all these submerged distinct urges that rise to the surface and become articulated such that ilya can obey and execute on shane's desire. i don't think it's impossible that they get there, as a dyad. and i think ilya is a very attuned top! but if shane can (early on) name or (throughout) direct a goddamn thing it's not onscreen. one component of this is autism and the way normative sex requires a bunch of tacit intuition/confident & resilient experimentation/navigation of ambiguity. another piece is shame and internalized homophobia. on both these valences, our shameless, assertive charisma machine is exactly what's required to bridge the gap between what shane needs and what he hasn't been able to bring himself to understand the shape of. (for christ's sake, rachel named the shame-stricken one 'shame with an n' and the one who gets things going 'my only boss is god'.)
shane doesn't know what the fuck to do with himself and his need, and then there's ilya turning towards him in the shower and showing him how audacious men cruise. it is such a consistently demonstrated asymmetry in the ability to isolate and enact a decision that it's very difficult for me to give credence to the idea that shane is any kind of puppet master. of course it becomes more playful and easeful over time. (it becomes more playful and easeful because ilya has made shane's desire into the vessel of his own; the container is defined and safe.) but straight through to their last sex scene, shane asks "this is real, right?" and then begs for what ilya is already giving him ("please fuck me"). if there's a decision there, it's the decision to be open, to trust, to give up and let himself be directed and handled and held. which is, sorry, the essence of submission, not a job you give a panting german shepherd
i dunno i just think there's something gorgeous about the shapelessness and urgency of the desire shane hands ilya. it's not an indication of weakness or immaturity! it's saying "you are my path to knowing myself, you are my path to getting what i need, my need is too big for me to manage, show me. decide for me. i trust you to decide." for somebody carrying a certain kind of weight, what a fucking relief.
and lemme tell you--for a certain kind of dom, being handed the raw fuel of trust on that scale is the kind of black tar heroin that has you abandoning your your original six captaincy in a real city during a cup window in order to move here and lose for three years
this is the mayor btw
