PhpStorm Won't Open on Linux
Recently PhpStorm suddenly failed to start under Debian Sid. Digging around in the log (~/.WebIde70/system/log/idea.log) I found this strange error:

Turns out that I had somehow lost my JDK installation. i.e.
> dpkg --get-selections | egrep "jdk|jre" openjdk-7-jre:amd64 install openjdk-7-jre-headless:amd64 install
The fix is easy!
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk
Even though OpenJDK isn't officially supported by JetBrains, I've had no issues running it for years.

Disable Screen Lock in GNOME Shell / Cinnamon
Iāve recently switched all my Linux workstations to Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) with Cinnamon as my desktop environment. Overall this has been a joy, and I feel free of the Ubuntu weight that Iād been carrying around for a few years. But since Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME Shell, Iāve also had a few instances where things werenāt quite working the way I wished they would. One such case is the screen lock. Anytime the GNOME Shell āscreensaverā (actually just a black screen) comes on, I was forced to type in my password. In a work or public environment this protection makes sense. But when Iām home step away for a few minutes, itās a nuisance to have to repeatedly type my password just to get back to what I was doing. Searching around the Internet didnāt immediately reveal a quick fix. I figured it must be something I could control with gsettings, but I had no idea what the key would be. So I decided to take a look at the source code for gnome-screensaver and stumbled upon the following snippet:

Ohhh, now that looks promising. Letās see if the lock is enabledā¦

Voila! No more screen lock. I certainly felt lucky to have found that code so quickly. Now, thereās a caveat. This will entirely disable your screen lock. So you canāt hit Ctrl-Alt-L to lock your screen if you are working on something sensitive. Turns out someone filed a buge with GNOME, so at least the developers are aware of the problem. Happy hacking!

Mom was going through some old files recently and discovered a strange envelope labeled

A quick check of the calendar revealed that this letter was indeed 8 years overdue for opening. Thanks a lot, Mom. Geez. Inside I was surprised with a hand-written note, dated June 2, 1993, from my 12 year old self to my 22 year old self! Enjoy.
Fix upside-down iPhone videos with mencoder
Accidentally shoot a video upside-down with your iPhone? Don't worry, it's easy to create a flipped copy that retains just about all the quality. Here's how to do it using free tools on Mac OS X, though this should work on any *nix platform.
Use MacPorts to install mencoder with the H.264codec.
$> sudo port -d install mplayer-devel +mencoder_extras
Use mencoder to make a flipped copy of your video
$> mencoder -oac pcm -ovc x264 -vf flip,mirror -of lavf -x264encopts subq=6:partitions=all:me=umh:frameref=5:bframes=3:b_pyramid=1:weight_b:threads=auto input.mov -o output.mov
Of course, replace input.mov with the path to your input movie.
Ideally we would just flip the video without re-encoding it, but turns out this is impossible. I'm not a video encoding expert, but this will produce a copy of your video that has no noticeable quality degradation. I like H.264's quality/compression ratio, so I grabbed a few of their recommended high quality settings. One minor issue is that the flipped video has no video stream, only audio, in Quicktime Player 10.0. Oddly, they'll play normally in a browser with the Quicktime plugin. Plus the videos will upload to Flickr or YouTube just fine. See the difference for yourself

New Year's Fun
Three weeks late, but I wanted to share what an awesome time Melissa and I had on New Yearās 2010. My favorite local brewery, Port Brewing of Pizza Port fame, teamed up with my favorite local beer bar, Toronado San Diego.
After 14 hours and a nearly cancelled flight coming back from Pennsylvania (with a delightful free upgrade to first class), I arrive in San Diego around 6pm. We hit Toronado around 8:30 p.m. to find it not too crowded. I think we were both expecting it to be slammed. Instead we sat right down at the bar and ordered the IPA flight, which consisted of 11 IPAās at 4oz each. Being good students, we took notes on eachā¦
Oh but the night was just getting started! We then decided to switch gears and did the stout and porter flight. Another delicious 11 brews with notesā¦
We both agreed the best beer of the night was the California Honey Ale, of which we both got a pint or two. Pizza Port also brought down some sort of a mobile pizza oven to cook really cheap pizza in the alley out back. Sweet. All in all a great time. Made me love Port and Toronado even more, and I hope they do something like this again!
A Tribute to Dr. Rod
My dad worked with Carlisle High School Athletics for as long as I can remember. He would do the physicals for the athletes before each season, and he stood on the sidelines during football games as the team doctor. I could tell he enjoyed the work - much of it was volunteer based. At the first football game of this season on September 25Ā 2009, Dave Hutchinson (a friend of Dadās) read the following tribute before kickoff.
Ladies and gentleman, about six weeks ago, one of the most dedicated friends of the Carlisle High School athletic programs passed away. Dr. Rodney Hough was just 65, but throughout his life had spent countless hours giving of himself to others āand our athletes here at Carlisle were frequently on the receiving end of his generosity. Dr. Hough was a pretty fair athlete himself; a scholarship football player at the University of Virginia, who went on to graduate from the UVA Medical School. He established a practice here in 1975, and as the years went by, became a constant presence on the sidelines, often caring for injured players at his own expense. His sons proudly worth the Green-and White a decade ago, and contributed to the championship squads of the late ā90's and 2000. We ask that you please rise, and help us observe a few moments of silence to honor the memory of Dr. Rodney Hough, an Air Force veteran during the Vietnam War, and remain standing as the Carlisle High School band plays our National Anthem.
