VICTORIE VESNA
AGAIN
http://noiseaquarium.com
I posted about her before I will post about her again, Vesna has enlarged the sea plankton in the sea to make them the size of whales and has also manipulated the sound they make so that we can hear them with our ears. So you are walking through a space with large plankton, and whale like sounds, playing on the fact that they are food for whales. The artists statement is one of awareness to the “invisible” world of plankton. Just because we can not see them, does not mean they aren’t there.
“The ecological crisis is a human crisis. Oceans must not be considered as flat blue surfaces which serve as dropping holes where we can let vanish all our anthropogenic remains. There are vast amounts of organisms that live down there and some suffer pain from our waste and noise. Many are aware of mammals such as whales and dolphins and there have been discussions about the chemical and waste pollution. But – often ignored is the invisible and the inaudible environment to us that is deeply secluded. Therefore, in this installation, we have created 3D enlarged plankton to be like whales. In addition, we amplify the noise as participants move closer to the animations to simulate how these organisms might experience and perceive this anthropogenic noise. This is a highly interdisciplinary artist led effort with biologists, chemists, nano-toxicologists and an animator all working together towards a common goal – to raise consciousness. “

“the piece is called clinamen v.2, created by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot and included as a part of the Soundtracks exhibit in the moma.
the exhibit is a large shallow pool filled with white ceramic bowls in varying sizes. the bowls are pushed around the pool by a gentle current, and the sound created as they hit each other is somewhere between a wind chime and a haunted bell.”

It’s a beautiful sound to listen to, It’s something beautiful and tranquil enough to have in your backyard. It’s fragile and majestic and calming. Really it’s beautiful to listen to and to watch.
1) some of the common threads in the constructed spaces were how much story was behind most of the pieces. Each artist seemed to have stories to their pieces that helped really make an impact with the message going for. For example I resonated with Kurt Ikens. Who used wood flooring referencing his fathers flooring buisiness.
2. I found Kurt Ikens more interesting because I also had a past in the construction business. As a kid I would go to school and on weekends and all summer it was “take your kid to work day” and I learned from a young age as Kurt did how hard it was to earn money. So I really resonated with the floor pieces before I even heard his story. To learn they were bamboo colored as if they were wood was amazing. I would probably try to take materials and distort them to a point where the original object is almost invisible. Or perhaps take excess pieces from construction and make things from them.
I would probably stop trying to please others with my work and try to please myself instead.
Flower mobile.
a) I chose noise aquarium and biological exploration because it’s interesting in conceptualization of exploration of the world around you. The way Vesna explores the digital and physical realms interests me and it seems interesting to watch and even to explore. They are very interactive pieces of art and the exploration and depth they exude is enticing. The pieces she creates ask for you to investigate them within their space.
b) Vesna feels there is no time and so she portrays a sort of time pocket in her work. She created a way for people to experience multiple times at once and also for people to replicate themselves and turn themselves into meme’s. Which are reproducible, cultural phenomenon. c)
One influence is that is it lifelike. It is meant to replicate the participant even when they are not present. She is also trying to replicate relationships between people and how they interact with others. For example and IP that is popular will probably have a more difficult time running than one that is not. From what I understood in the reading, even something digital can get overwhelmed.
RUTH ASAWA WIRE SCULPTURE
Ruth Asawa makes organic shapes from manmade loops through interconnected wire. Seems as methodical as a crochet bag. The organic shapes are something I would like to incorporate into my work wether through the wire or materials I put into the piece.
The way she makes the pieces are heavy in pattern and almost solid in shape. It’s so interesting to look at and allows me to not be bored looking at it, through the layers. It’s delicately intricate and you know it was not a rushed job that required patience. It’s almost meditative in structure.

https://www.widewalls.ch/artist/alexander-calder/ Alexander Calder Wire art and mobiles.
2-D art bends the mind of the viewer and tries to pretend it’s 3-D. So when 3-D wire art comes into play it bends our mind to go between the 2-D and 3-D worlds and can be seen in both ways. Calder is an expert and the manipulation of wire and 3-D art.

Question set #5
1. Name one source of influence in Caroline Burton's art and how does it manifest in the work.
One of the influences was her father and his work brought the grid like effect into her own art. Another influence would be the phrase “A bone,a rag,and a hank of hair” to which her art pieces in this particular show revolved around.
2. What is Caroline Burton's process like? Does she have a set plan in the beginning?
She does not seem to have a plan when working on her pieces and stated that most of the work was created through play. Most of it was experimentation and letting the objects decide how they wanted to be put together, and how the patterns made through play interacted with eachother.
3. What is the main purpose of the grid in Caroline's work?
The purpose of the grid (as stated in her artist statement) was to create a continuity from piece to piece, for herself as well as the viewer when she creates art.
4. Briefly discuss two limitations the photograph poses when used to experience a three dimensional artwork.
Texture is lost and sometimes depth is lost, because we are translationg somehting three dimensional into a 2-D platform. Texture something we usually can feel is lost, unless the shadows bring out a visual texture but it is still nothing compared to acftual texture.
5. In the future what will likely be one potential technological alternative to the photograph when viewing an artwork? Do you see this alternative as a valid addition to the photograph or as a replacement all together?
In the future Videos can be a replacement for the camera’s photography because there it is something that can imitate the human eyes better. You can explore the piece better, get a better sense of depth and size. If the object being filmed has texture it may be lost still within the video but as stated before it could be imitated with visual texture.
Tampon gun 2.0. Sorry for not posting 1.0. The gun was done before that. Shoutout to my brother being totally normalized to my shenanigans and being a model!! There may or may not be a 3.0 because I’m debating wether or not an addition is needed. I am stuck between the questions, would it extend and enhance my message, or would it be an addition for the heck of an addition.
When a nerd snake invades your bed. Again this nerd snake was finished before I knew we had to take pictures of the process. Sorry guys for lack of background.

Question set #4
1: Vik Muniz feels as though the art community is based around the rich. That it’s exclusive to those who know about art, and it’s still a very closed field. Even though art is meant for everyone, it feels intimidating to those who don’t understand it.
2: According to Muniz the worst part of Brazillian society is that it has a large gap between the rich and the poor. The rich feel entitled and better than the poor when the reality is that the rich and poor are both still humans at the end of the day and each deserve respect.
3: The garbage pickers can sort through the rich and the poor. If the bags are small it’s a poor persons. If the bags are large with books and shoes they can assume the garbage came from someone with money.
4: He likes the moment where a viewer sees the painting or picture for what it was created to represent from a distance, and then when they break the barrier and look closer they are able to see the material. He enjoys experimenting with material and manipulating it to create something in which the viewer can explore it.
5: Primary art market is the exhibit where the piece establishes a price. The secondary art market is when it goes to the auction!
6. Tião ended up paying out the rest of the workers in a lump sum of $7,500. In the end he also carried the 2012 Olympic torch with other brazillian natives! So I believe his life has become vary great and he still continues to make a difference.
