This was my first submitted piece to the challenge. Not sure what I wanted to get out of this piece exactly, such an awkward bird!

My first crack at a "Maori Warrior" for this months Character Design Challenge. Happy with the turtle idea, but some of the people that have submitted are so dynamic I want to really get some movement into the pic. He looks so static!

The final product, first round. I never saw some of the more realistic ones, they were shipped around Australia though and I could found sets in airports and National Geographic shops.
The designs were used for the coasters initially but pot stands and book marks were also produced.
Itβs one of my favourite pieces of work and itβs fun to check shops and see if they are still selling so many years later.

As time went on we replaced some of the more βcartoonyβ animals with something a bit more βrealisticβ.
Lots more drawn than ever produced though! I enjoyed the challenge of getting the critters to fit the shape :)
Post 1 of 3 Brent McKinstry of Five Oaks Australia wanted to laser cut some timber coasters for sale in tourist locations. His idea was to make circular illustrations of Australian fauna as coasters that could then be made into different packs for different regions of Australia. Some of these illustrations were then re-drawn in Adobe Illustrator, then the vector art was used with a laser cutter for the finished articles.

Logo ideas and final product for Churchill United Soccer Club
Scarabs and beetles have been an inspiration for a long time and the Blue (Ted Kord) Beetle is one of my favourite characters. It would rock as a logo!
I used to love Yowie eggs. Much better than Kinda Surprise.

So I sat in a fairly boring class one day sketching a cute Firestorm I saw in a comic ages ago, then things progressed into a page full of flaming heads and the best into a series of characters for a story. Think Smurfs or Snorks with elements as the character types and dictating the personality. Like phosphorous would be likely to fly off the handle easily, etc. The "Flame heads" would be a group of kids that burn constantly.
