"Blorbo from my shows" this, "blorbo from my videogames" that. What about "blorbo from my DnD game" that only three other people know. Do you ever think about that-
can't believe the only options are 30 minutes early or 10 minutes late. if only there were some other way. but what can you do
They wear suits, but they don't even know basic etiquette.
Based on @cowardsexual 's post of a very sleepy phm science team and Grace's teacher instincts
ok nah I'm gonna keep talking phm to myself. Because while I think Grace's characterization as well as most Rocky scenes generally speaking were an improvement, I do, I do think they very much filed off the edges of my girl stratt. I don't think it was adding emotional depth there so much as reducing her ideological complexity - sure the novel execution was less technically proficient and far less emotional or psychological, but as with many aspects of the movie there's such a high level of polish that it feels almost mechanical. I can see the gears turning - look at her sing and leave awkwardly, look at her sad sack face lying about not regretting sending grace to die. Like god, let her blow up Antarctica and do silly power posturing. Let her ruin the climate by covering the Sahara with astrophage farms and jailbreak criminals. It's not a crime for her to actually be a ruthless pragmatist, in ways larger and more alarming than simply sending a schoolteacher on a suicide mission in space. To respect and care about Grace while truly also fundamentally viewing him as a tool in her mission to save the world. But the movie knows its mission is to be About Ryland Grace, (it's tight screenwriting. it's the gears meshing together) which ultimately meant that her character (as well as Rocky's and everyone else's) simply warped around him, to hit The Expected Emotional Beats.
... particularly unpleasant was the very mechanical decision to code her as a kind of doomed love interest to dr. grace, because ofc right? Granted they could have done worse than they did, they could have warped her much worse and made a relationship an actual thing. I had held the optimistic view going into this that it was simply egregious audience heteronormativity that was responsible for that reading but no, no they're cutting to her "I'm a soft tortured soul beneath it all" scenes and soulful gazes riiiight after the adrian-has-a-mate conversation. You're supposed to make this connection. These scenes are in conversation with each other and that element of romance is what the scriptwriters wanted the audience to see. Gag.

Sidenote there are many things I think are excellent in the movie, and others that are neutral to positive adaptational changes. The movie lasered in effectively on the core emotional journey and character growth that was a bit blunted in the book - also it was super funny, I'm cool with whatever in the service of a good joke, visual drama and a good cry. I DO in fact have a gripe with how Rocky was translated in the epilogue scene. Wtf, there's no reason for Grace to still understand him only in terms of simple cute babyish language. Where's my foul mouthed mechanical engineer? Rocky's written a bit too much like a cutesy mascotish character in the movie at times imo, although to be fair his chemistry with grace had a LOT more heart.
saw phm in the theater, which mainly confirmed for me once and for all that I just don't like theaters very much. it was a lovely movie (I'm pretty sure!), but there's so much other sensory garbage going on, there are no subtitles and the sound is a Loud Yet Indistinct Bad Time, so it's tough to get completely immersed
the bad thing about having unhealthy habits due to mental illness, is when you DO do something healthy style you can't brag about about it because then people will then know you've been doing it yucky style all along. Like you can't brag you changed your sheets or brushed your teeth because then ppl will be like oh did you not brush your teeth regularly before? Thats yucky disgusting! So you just gotta keep it to yourself. And be proud alone, I suppose.

Cellulose nitrate was used to make dice from the late 1860s until the middle of the twentieth century, and the material remains stable for decades. Then, in a flash, they can dramatically decompose. Nitric acid is released in a process called outgassing. The dice cleave, crumble, and then implode.

we DO grow old and happy. btw.
And you find love and it stays with you.
Older women are so, so beautiful, and older trans women are no exception. Celebrate the beauty of our elders! Celebrate trans beauty!
I wanted to share some more of these, specifically trans women of color. The images I'm posting are from a project called To Survive On This Shore and it's an interview project. I am only posting a handful so it's so worth checking out!
This is Linda, 60
Alexis, 64
Helena, 63
Kendrah, 72 (!!)
Tasha, 65
It was deeply healing to me to discover this project. The site has selected photos and attached interviews and it's definitely worth your time. I didn't include any because the focus of this post imo is transfems but there are a lot of beautiful interviews with transmasc people too if you're interested! But that'll have to be another post π
for those interested, the photographer is Jess T. Dugan. The link to this particular project is as follows:
