The whole thing with Doey and Poppy's relationship is so interesting, especially after Chapter 5 with that one tape revealing that Poppy ran away because of how scared she was of the responsibility and how it led to her being locked up

I think it is both deeply intriguing and frustrating to see that the beneficiaries of white supremacy are the ones who seemingly know the least about how it functions 😅 But based off of the answers received, I see that this, too, is a purposeful systemic act!

This is going to potentially upset some folks but... I'm not arguing about it. Please feel free to remove me if this is too much. 🙏🏾

There's a pattern that was contained in all your answers specifically (and I read all of them, I promise!) Someone mentioned it as "white colorism", and I want to point out what it is you're seeing- and it's still white supremacy. It comes back to how I tell y'all all the time that Blackness isn't just a skin color- to an extent, neither is Whiteness. It's a class and social designation. Whiteness, and the power that comes with, is relative.

So to use that person's example (which I appreciate, btw!), if your Greek or Southern Italian cousin travels up to Finland or Sweden, they're not going to be treated 'as white' as their Northern counterparts, right? Their Whiteness is not as powerful amongst fellow (and ✌🏾more White✌🏾) peers. That was purposefully considered during the creation of race by the way! There is absolutely a hierarchy of which white is deemed ✌🏾better✌🏾, e.g. the terminology of White Anglo Saxon Protestant (WASP). Even amongst Whiteness there are tiers!

But if I take that same Italian or Greek person, that✌🏾lesser✌🏾white, and put them in Vietnam or Thailand, in the United States, in the Congo or in Rwanda, in Brazil or Argentina, guess what they still hold on to? That Whiteness! That Whiteness that was near powerless when you were amongst your own, now becomes a source of perspective and power. The (ongoing) genocide of the Americas, the (ongoing) carving of Africa, the (ongoing) brutalization of Asia didn't happen just because Europeans thought they were better countries individually, it happened because they thought they were more human and entitled to bodies that were less than!
