The story is a cute comedy, the characters are funny, entertaining and not deprived of humanity (so far)
Wow. Lucky Paradise is the manhwa to see the case of how a toxic relationship damages someone. The only one who deserves a happy ending in that triangle is Ho-in. I hope Chunwoo ends up in a psychiatrist (or anywhere that is far away from Ho-in), that should be his happy ending, that kid has TONS of issues and Taesoo should end up in hell.

Yo, whatās up Given fandom? (Or whatās left of it)
I havenāt paid attention to the manga more than one year so I am curious if anything has changed?
Likeā¦
-Have Mafuyu and Uenoyama talked each other?
-Has Mafuyu acknowledged his issues?
-Have we seen more Aki and Haruki even as passing by?
-Is Hirragi "the selfish brat" develop a tiiinnny bittty self awareness?
-Have even one character has acknowledged that Uenoyama is doing his best and deserves better (mangaka, fandom, friends, bf etc)?
-Have Kizu stopped thirsting for Yuki?
No? Not even one of them above have happed in one whole year?
Good that I gave up that dumpster fire, I just wish that I could take out Uenoyama with me tooā¦
@smuggled-bagels Did Hiiragi say these to Uenoyama though? He will be the ultimate brat to me until he treats Ue better, I donāt care the rest about him. And Yukiā¦ah our lovely and pretty dead "main character" I have been saying this for 2 years that Yuki is the downfall of this manga and story. All because some fangirls in Twitter get wet when it comes to him and Kizu caters to them. What a way to write a manga huh?
Well for your first question whether Hiiragi developed any sort of self-awareness, the answer is yes. For your second one, no, Hiiragi talked about this with Mafuyu. I hope we'll get a moment where Hiiragi (and Shizu) acknowledged the pain they caused to Ue though. And yea, fully agreed, Hiiragi is always a brat as far as I'm concerned.
I don't hate Yuki or Mafuyu's thought processing (I love Mafuyu, in fact), what I dislike is Hiiragi and Shizu constantly going on and on about Yuki and how "Yuki and Mafuyu were meant to be" and how they were surprised that Mafuyu would even choose Ue. There was a part where Shizu straight up went "If you think less about yourself and your pain and devote yourself to him more, you wouldn't be in such a difficult spot." And that all is so unnecessary and straight up Mean Girls vibe. From a realistic standpoint (pretending theyre real people), I get that people say Hiiragi and Shizu haven't processed their grief, but that's no excuse to unload your unprocessed trauma on someone else and make them carry your burden. From a narrative standpoint, that whole thing (the surprise, the meant to be, etc.) is unnecessary because the lack of it doesn't take away the tension between Mafuyu's withdrawal for fear of abandonment versus Ue's pressing forward because he wanted to connect with Mafuyu. But then again, if Kizu's decision to add these snippets is to show that Hiiragi and Shizu haven't processed their grief, then I expect some sort of apology from the both of them for unloading their shit on Ue to show their complete development arc.
About Ue appreciation, at least from what I saw on the reddit fandom, no one blamed Ue? Most agreed that Hiiragi is at fault and look forward to a proper conversation. So I'm still here hoping for the best.
Also can we keep this convo out of the fandom tags?
@smuggled-bagels Well honestly, your take is much more positive than mine. I genuinely think that a lot of distortions happened in the story and characters because Kizuās apparent fan service for some Twitter Yuki fans, that is it. I explained a lot why I think that way in this blog so I will not repeat myself but long story short, story has shifted from 4 main queer guys struggle in life to Yuki-Hiraagi and Shizu. Aki and Haruki are nowhere to be seen, Mafuyu is regressed a lot after first volume, he is all over the place now, Uenoyama is a mess, they supposed to date what what we have seen about it so far? All we see for one and half year is airhead Hiiragi, Shizu and his toxic love (that idiotā¦I have never wanted to slap a fictional character more than Shizu when he did that talk with Ue) and MORE AND MORE shining, glorified Yuki panels and listened how wonderful he wasā¦
And I am sorry but I donāt buy "but they are grieving!" excuse for every damn thing⦠So their way of grieving is to take out everything from Ue, disregard, disrespect, compare with Yuki to downgrade him, a guy with good intentions who just wants to date Mafuyu and be good to him? That is not grieving, that is being inconsiderate assholes for characters and sloppy writing for Kizu.
There might have been a good storyline for Yuki to dig a bit why he committed su*cide because imo, he was deeply depressed. Now that would be a good reason to keep Yuki in the story but no, Kizu didnāt go there either. Only explanation was that he lived in the extremes like his father. Ok then. What we have is this dead figure looming above every characters head and worshiped and no one can convince me that has nothing to do those Twitter fans who screaming about Yuki and his oh"unending love" for Mafuyu, even if their relationship was pretty problematic, just like Shizuās understanding of love. Ue and Mafuyuās love was the most healthy one in the manga and they were good for each other but now all is a mess just because Kizuās insistence to keep Yuki a center point in the story. I said this all the time that Mafuyu will not allowed to move on until Kizu and fandom does.
I have read the latest volumeās summary and if you (I mean Kizu) feel the need to explain to the reader from another characterās perspective that means you are not doing a good job as a storyteller.
And a question for you, think about all the volumes of Given manga, all the storylines and panels etc and tell me which one is Kizuās favorite characters in your opinion? For me, the answer is the source of all those problems above.
I liked Given for the 4 main guys but especially for Ue and Mafuyu, I liked how level headed Ue was, how much he cares about Mafuyu and how strong Mafuyu was when he was trying to get his life back. They were good for each other because they were learning from each other and together and growing. I wouldnāt change all those panels that 4 of them hang out to all those shiny Yuki panels. I couldnāt care less about brat Hiiragi, asshole Shizu and deader than dead Yuki.
Honestly I have nothing to add you pretty much hit the nail in the head here lol. To your question, yea Yuki is no doubt her favorite... but that's why I thought she spent so much time around Yuki regardless of fandom's sentiments. I don't know much about the fandom side though, is the Japanese side of the fandom all over Yuki?
I guess I'm just hopeful (or naive?) that after this arc we will once and for all stop hearing this endless talk about Yuki. I want to wait and see what Kizu will do with Hiiragi and Shizu's characters after the concert and whether they would apologize/change their minds about how they viewed Ue. If yes, good, if no, then like you said, it's sloppy writing aimed to glorify Yuki Yet Again.
I also wonder if this feeling of 'when will we stop talking about Yuki' also comes from the fact that arc 1 and 3 are separated and thus making it feel like we're going in circles because after an arc things are supposed to be resolved! That's what an arc is for! Arc 2 focuses on a different issue, which hammers in the fact that whatever happened in arc 1 is over, but arc 3 happened and here we are again, talking about Yuki *Again*. But again, I still want to see to the end of arc 3 and a rough idea of arc 4 before saying more.
And yes, fully agreed with your last statement, I just cannot care less about those three and just wish we move on from them already.
I really enjoy Ue and Mafuyu's relationship just like you. I just hope that Kizu can make things right; maybe she doesn't usually write such a long story like this and ended up dragging things, but at the end of the day hopefully she knows how to tie everything up. Either way I'm waiting for the concert (and arc 3) to conclude so I can once again stop reading Given and let it marinate for another 2-3 years.
@smuggled-bagels apparently Kizu herself has answered the question about our discussion. She has indeed planned Given as one volume and end it.
"2- What are the origins, like the character settings of the 4 main characters.
It was originally planned to be completed in one volume, similar to many BL works. Initially, the plan was to end with the first live performance.ā

I donāt know much about Japanese side, I meant international fans on Twitter. I am not looking for a long time though so I donāt know the current situation. But then, whenever I took look at Twitter to read some analysis, I came upon fangirls that are screaming about Yuki and his unending love for Mafuyu etc.etc.
So it can be both, if Yuki was only her favorite, then as you pointed out, why wrap up the story in first volume and turn back again? Sometimes we forgot that this is Kizuās art but also her product to sell. If she has an impression that Yuki keeps the reader then why not to continue? It just means she didnāt have a long plan how the story will continue so she just get along with it.
I am sure that you know Jujutsu Kaisen, itās creator Gege Akutami locked the most popular caracter of the manga down. Gojo is not in the manga more than 3 years? And Gojo is super duper popular but creator hasnāt given up and give Gojo back just because fans want him. So as a reader, i am okay with it because I believe that they have a plan for that character. There is a reason that he is absent for that long. But I donāt have the same feelings for Given and Kizu. Either she distorted the storyline to insert Yuki as much as possible or she didnāt have a long term plan for the story and doing what becomes popularā¦I just canāt explain why else to go back to the same story.
Anyway, like you said maybe she will turn everything around and connect everything and make perfect sense but I have zero belief so I will continue just check the general storyline. Even if she will be able to connect everything, I will still be bitter how poorly she handled Mafuyu and Ueās relationship, the absence of their scenes etc. THEY ARE TWO TEENAGERS WHO STARTED TO DATE GOD SAKE! There was so much potential there and she wasted it with supporting shitty characters.

@potato-longsocks than you very much for the summary, appreciate itš as for the current storyline, I donāt know and I donāt have much expectations tbh, i will be glad if someone/anyone acknowledge and appreciate Uenoyama for something/anything. Yes, the bar that low for me.

The Old Fashioned Cupcake fact of the day:
Togawa leaves (or tries to) the house/place whenever he feels like he might not be able control himself and canāt handle even the thought that he might force Nozue about something/anything.
Stan Togawa instead of all those asshole BL mains who think saying no means yes. No means NO!
Aghhh, I am MAD!! Nobody tell me they have taste when they cry about all these BL mangas full of sexual violence and sleep on this masterpiece! Same for those publishers who publishes many trashes and pass on this wonderful piece of work! This is my favorite BL ever! So much that I want to print it and bring it everywhere to read anytime. Someone publish this in English damn it!
I didnāt know that itās published in polish, that is great, lucky you! English manga publishers are really sleeping on this wonderful piece of art really. But I read that they are doing a miniseries of it so maybe that will put more light on the manga and get more attentionš¤
This will be probably my last comment on Given for a long time because I can hardly be bothered anymore, completely lost my interest. I will check general storyline from a far. I just saw some comments that explains Mafuyuās grief process and how important Yuki was and we all should be more understanding etc. This insistence as if the problem is Mafuyuās grief. No. It is not about Mafuyu because we donāt see Mafuyu at.all. THAT has been the problem for me.
And as someone that criticize recent storylines in manga, I will explain my stance in this for the last time:
Personally, my problem was never Mafuyuās grief or Yukiās importance in his life. The first volumes of the manga are still my favorite and it is all about Mafuyuās grief. But we were following Mafuyu. Mafuyu used to have a character focus and development. My criticism is, Kizu Natsuki and the fandom have focused on Yuki and his glorification so much that the story totally shifted from its axis and the backbone of the story, hence: Mafuyu and Ritsuka, then Haruki and Aki. Four guys coming together, tries to make music and found their ways in life. But at one point it just turn into who will love, glorify and NOT forget Yuki more, we are just listening him from different characters and how attached he was to Mafuyu (And I donāt forget you, Yukiās mother, how you put the blame on Mafuyu like you werenāt Yukiās MOTHER! You know, supposedly the responsible ADULT!!) For a while, the story is mostly about his another wonderful/perfect/glorious side that we would see for each chapter. Pay attention on the shining and sparkling Yuki panels each chapter, if not with words, we are told with visual storytelling how wonderful he was, only him, just him only. It is a must now. That is my main criticism about the manga.
The manga completely lost its focus on Mafuyu. I cannot get angry at him about anything because I have no idea how he is doing, thinking etc. Ritsuka is also a mess. We literally left their character developments at the end of first periods. Thank god, we could see a glimpse of Haruki and Aki in last chapter. Where are their character developments of these four so far? Struggles? Thoughts? Relationships between them? Mafuyu and Ritsuka about to graduate and what we see from that so far? Their daily life? Their relationship (umm they are supposed to date, you know? Yeah I remember time to time even if manga completely forgot that)
And here we are, all we think about Yukiās song!!! Then what? What will we expect from Mafuyu now? Breaks down and cry how much he misses Yuki and couldnāt get over him so fandom could cry with him? Just like he kind of did at the beginning, after his first stage? Then what have we done in between all those years? What was the story so far? What was the development? There were/are a lot of wonderful characters with potential and we are going round and round, around the same thing and it.was.such.a.waste⦠is what I am saying.
I said this before, Mafuyu isnāt allowed to move on and continue with his life because Kizu and fandom havenāt. This story is not about his healing anymore, it is about his unending misery.
Eh, at least I have the first volumes of good storytelling, a developing story and characters. I can always turn back and read them when I want to read Given.
@nooneels I already gave it up though? Like I said in the beginning and the end of my main post? And this post was written long time ago. Not sure what you are lecturing me about.

Another day, another standard Given chapter:
-Hiiragi is being a obtuse, inconsiderate, insensitive brat
-Uenoyama is doing his best but no one appreciates his efforts
-Aki and Haruki are nowhere to be seen (they are supposed to be the other two main characters but who cares right?)
-Mafuyu isā¦justā¦thereā¦I guessā¦
