āAriel sold her voice for legs just because of a guyā
Meanwhile Ariel with legs;
Ariel already loved the human world long before meeting Eric (you donāt get a collection like hers overnight)Ā and when she finally got a chance to explore it, she took it.
Ursula made it more about Eric than Ariel ever did.
and i mean hell this has been talked about before in more depth than i can, but when people complain about how the ending was changed (the original fairytale does not give ariel a happy ending, she dies trying to protect the prince), i think about the fact that this was written by a gay man in the 1980s
and i think itās entirely valid (and gives her an extremely strong connection to the queer community) to change the story so she doesnāt die because of who she loves
Triton made escape a necessity. Once someone goes to the point of destroying your possessions in a violent rampage, there is no staying and sticking it out, thereās no safety. (And Ariel, even in Ursulaās lair, gave Triton more thought than he deserved at the time.) Nowhere in the ocean she could go and be safe. Everyoneās always āwhy donāt they just leave :|ā in abusive situations until the leaving is not something they find 100% worthy of approval.
Ursula made it about Eric. She didnāt have to. Ariel had to get out from under Tritonās thumb, it could have been literally anything. Ursula took advantage of a desperate victim for her own agenda. Realistic predatory behavior toward a vulnerable person.
And also
Thereās always the āEric didnāt want her until she was silent and meekā criticism - FIRST OF ALL he started out looking for a woman who wasnāt silent, and second of all what part of the carriage driving bit (or any of her other actions on land) is meek, exactly?
People above have noted the queer subtext. Now, on the subject of Ariel being willing to leave her family, aside from the baseline āthis is an abusive environment and she was not safe thereā angle I already mentioned, consider: Arielās father made it clear he would stop at nothing to crush and tear down who she was and replace it with what he wanted her to be. Now - what demographic might that resonate with? And given Ashmanās involvement, do you think that was a coincidence?
there has been scholarly discussion about the idea that the og little mermaid story, where she dies at the end, was written as a queer allegory.
so taking that into account⦠there is something very touching about taking this story from hans christian andersen from beyond the grave and being like āthings are different now. they get to be happy. she gets to live.ā
At the gate for my flight home from visiting friends and there's a woman here with a service Shiba Inu. No pics because he has a Do Not Disturb vest and taking pics of strangers is illegal but I need to stress how ON DUTY this animal is. Ears up. Eyes doing Lazer scans of everything. Examining everyone who passes within 10ft like a security guard. Ass planted on her feet. I have never seen a dog with such intense chivalric guardian energy before. He has tiny eyebrows and they are FURROWED with concentration.
Man behind me having unhinged phone conversation. There is an internationally famous dairy in the area I was visiting and he was commissioned by the lady on the other end of the phone to collect specific cheeses from there. The lady is very high strung about the type and condition of the cheese.
The man does not know from cheese. The man "ain't never seen no cheese but orange before" and "I showed ya list to the cheese lady so if it's wrong it's her fault ok?"
I am 80% sure she sent him there for a really specific bleu cheese, 40% sure he does not have the very specific bleu cheese, and 100% sure he's done with her shit.
Our flight is delayed.
He does not have the cheeses in a cooler, just a regular backpack.
I need to emphasize that there is no cooler bag in the backpack. He has Jansport backpack that is jam-packed with cheeses. There is apparently $405 dollars worth of cheeses in that backpack, which I know because he has been trying to get the lady to venmo him the expense, which she has failed to do. It is unclear whether his relation to the lady is romantic, familial or what, but I'm leaning towards "what".
Two more people have joined us. One is a very elegant man with a perfect manicure in a tailored business suit, the other is a neon-haired person of indeterminate gender wearing a fox kirigumi. The Shiba Inu has been staring at the latter for three minutes now.
Uh oh.
Cheese man has been demanding payment because apparently he went like six hours out of his way and paid with his own money and between the cheese and price of gas, he is pretty sure he does not have enough money in his account for an Uber home.
The lady is FLABBERGASTED that he is demanding payment at all, as she was under the impression he was doing this for her out of the goodness of his heart.
He's not having it. He's insisting she told him she would pay him back- he would have gotten her maybe one cheese somewhere closer to his business in the area out of love, but he went out of his way because she agreed to pay him costs+ extra to cover it.
HE RECORDED THE CONVERSATION IN WHICH SHE PROMISED TO PAY FOR THE CHEESE, SHE'S THAT MUCH OF A FLAKE.
I am about to offer this man cash for some of these cheeses because our flight is now more delayed.
"YOU ALWAYS DO THIS! YOU ALWAYS DO THIS AND I FALL FOR IT EVERY TIME! NO! NO! FUCK YOU! IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA PAY ME, YOU DON'T GET FANCY CHEESE."
"OR ELSE WHAT?"
"I'm gonna-? THE BABY SHOWER? MONICA CAN'T EVEN HAVE THIS CHEESE SHE'S PREGNANT!"
"The cheese lady asked if it was for someone because the mushrooms or whatever in the cheese are dangerous for the baby or something?? You wanna poison Monica?"
"WHY WOULD I LIE ABOUT THAT?"
"YEAH OF COURSE I GOT THE CHEESE, THATS WHY I DON'T GOT MONEY FOR UBER!"
"YEAH, GO TELL! GO TELL MOMMA I STOPPED YOUR STUPID ASS FROM KILLING MONICA OR THE BABY! FUCK!"
*hangs up phone*
*head in hands, borderline hyperventilating*
The man in the three piece suit is in the chair next to him. He waits a moment, then reaches into his carryon and pulls out an entire bottle of wine with the TSA pre check sticker on it, and taps cheese guy on the shoulder.
"If your friend doesn't want it, would you be amenable to having it right now?"
Naturally, I have volunteered my box of wheat thins and offered to buy one of the harder cheeses which should be fine if it makes it home.
Meanwhile, Kirigumi has noticed that the Shiba Inu is staring at her and is correctly intimidated.
1. This is some fucking great Camembert. I have compensated cheese guy accordingly. So have like six other people. He's recouped like half his losses.
2. Cheese guy is crying a little about the cash and opening up about his problems. The cheese lady is his younger sister. Suit guy is being very generous with his Pinot Blanc. We are having a picnic/improv family therapy session.
3. This is apparently the latest in a long string of his sister asking for something and then flaking when he asks to be paid back. Started with paying him back only some of what he was owed, then claiming something she paid for him was of equal value when it was not, then recently telling him his memory is wrong and he said it was a gift or that he'd do it for free.
"Yeah, the specific thing of trying to convince you your memory is unreliable is called gaslighting and it's really fucked up." I say
"yeeeeah. The other stuff I forgave because she's never really had a good job so she can't pay me back all the time but at least she was making an effort y'know? But that was. That was over the line."
"If you haven't already, check on the rest of your family's finances. My brother started trying to gaslight everyone when he started stealing from our parents." Says Pinot Blanc.
4. Shiba Inu Lady has purchased a cheddar. Apparently, the dog's name is Donut, and he's her service dog because she's severely visually impaired.
"Oh, he's a guide dog?" Asks cheese guy.
"oh, no." She laughs. "He's too short, and the way my eyes are, it's easier for me to navigate with a cane. No, the problem I have is that some morally impaired people see the cane and think they can get away with stealing my bag or assaulting me because I wouldn't be able to give a description- which is wrong, but rather than deal with that I got Donut, and he helps me by howling at anyone who gets in my personal space and biting anyone who grabs me!"
"Uh." Says Kirigumi. "He's been staring at me do I need to back up or..?"
"Ohdear! No, no- He wasn't looking at you! He loves cheese but he knows he's not supposed to beg so he decided the way to deal with something he wants but can't have is to stare in the other direction."
"OKAY!" Says Kirigumi. "I'm wearing fox pajamas and thought like. He thought I was another dog or something."
"No, no- he doesn't care about dogs, and you get a warning before he goes for the calves. Very helpful, when I was living in Italy!"
"Oh what part? I have family in Tuscany." Says Pinot.
"Does he want a cheese? There is still so much cheese." Says cheese guy.
Plane may be arriving. I am paying for in flight WiFi to keep y'all updated.
1. Cheese guy has sold all but two or three cheeses that he an Pinot are going to eat on the flight.
2. I know they're planning to continue because Pinot talked to the gate agent so he and cheese guy can sit together and talk about family drama and cheese.
3. Pinot has been teaching him about different types of cheese and how to enjoy them.
4. Cheese guy apparently repairs computers and other technology devices for a living and is currently doing the software version of scraping barnacles and other crap off Pinot'macbook.
5. Pinot is now convinced that cheese guy is the smartest and most interesting man in the world.
Ok so the Wifi wasn't working on the plane (also like, nonstop turbulence) and also they got seated in a different row from me, but:
Now that I've heard the word aloud, and they are an astrophysicist. Who correctly believes in being comfy as fuck on planes. They are also familar with the concept of a meet-cute and is rooting for them too.
Got to walk the nice lady and her Tactical Assault Shiba to her next gate because it was on the way out and talk for a bit. Donut is called that not because he is the color of a Donut (which he is) but because he likes to sleep curled up in a perfect circle. He has a sister who does the same thing named Bagel.
Lost track of Pinot and Cheeseguy for a bit but when I saw them again at Baggage claim, Cheeseguy was holding both their jackets, and Pinot was on the phone to his hotel about "Well do you have any rooms with TWO beds?". The rest of the call indicated that yes, there were rooms with two beds, but Readers, I Had A Moment.
:)
Anyway, it's 2AM, I need to sleep, if you feel like supporting this kind of hard-hitting reporting, I have a Tip Jar!
yeah okay, ill reblog that!
I can count on one hand the number of things I've reblogged in the last several years, but this is 100% worth it

Things are maybe getting a little too real in a convo with one of my playersā¦
I know tabletop RPG players being stumped by first-grade logic puzzles is a funny meme and all, but as a GM the thing youāve gotta realise is that nine times out of ten, your players are getting roadblocked by bone-simple puzzles for one of three reasons:
a. they donāt realise that there is a puzzle;
b. you didnāt clearly or completely communicate the information required to solve the puzzle; or
c. they came up with a perfectly valid solution and you rejected it because it wasnāt the specific solution given by the source you stole the puzzle from.
These arenāt unsolvable problems, but their solutions require you to really think about what youāre doing.
First, you have to make it obvious that a puzzle is present. Engaging with the gameās fictional world as a puzzle-box to be solved is not many playersā default mode of engagement; they may be more inclined to approach it as a simulated reality, or an improvisational theatre exercise, or as an opportunity to Talk About Their Feelings.
You need to explicitly signpost that itās time to go into puzzle mode. Sometimes this means breaking the fourth wall and just telling your group āokay, itās puzzle time nowā; if thatās what it takes, do it.
Second, you need to be absolutely rigorous in identifying the minimal set of information thatās needed to arrive at a solution.
Donāt assume that whatās obvious to you will be obvious to everybody, especially if itās unstated. In particular, be wary of clues that rely on catching pop culture references, as your players definitely donāt have the exact same set of referents that you do.
Donāt assume that your players are going to perfectly recall information that came up hours ago (or, heaven forfend, in previous sessions!) ā they donāt have your notes to refer to.
Write shit down, make a checklist, and actually, physically check each clue off as you provide it to make sure you havenāt missed one. Youād be amazed how many puzzle-based adventures come to a crashing halt because the GM misremembered which clues theyād already provided and ended up entirely omitting one or more critical pieces of information.
Take a hard look at your phrasing, and ask yourself whether the way youāve phrased any of your clues admits multiple equally plausible interpretations, particularly ones you didnāt intend.
(Incidentally, that last point is why it isnāt safe to assume that players can rely on their own notes to keep the clues in order. Even if you phrased the clue perfectly to avoid ambiguity or multiple interpretations, the player responsible for note-taking may have written it down wrong! If a puzzleās solution must rely on note-taking, write the notes yourself and make them into player handouts.)
Thirdly, recognise that a tabletop RPG isnāt a puzzle book or a video game. Puzzles whose intended solutions arbitrarily rule out certain approaches arenāt going to fly. In video games these arbitrary limits often take the form of the proverbial waist-high fence, but at the tabletop, waist-high fences can be less obvious.
For example, you might present a puzzle that can trivially be bypassed by using an ability that you just plain forgot the party has. When that happens, donāt resort to evil genie logic to explain why it doesnāt work ā accept your failure and move on.
On no account should you reject a perfectly reasonable proposed solution just because you didnāt think of it first; as the saying goes, thatās pride fucking with you.
Finally, accept that you can do everything right on paper and still end up with a puzzle that wonāt work for your particular group because they just donāt have the skills or the temperament for it.
Sometimes itāll be obvious, like ādonāt give a party with a dyslexic leader a word problemā.
Other times itāll be more subtle. For example, some players are so constitutionally risk-averse that, when presented with a course of action whose potential outcomes are unknown, theyāll prefer to do nothing at all, even when inaction will definitely get them killed ā and when it does, theyāll blame you for putting them in that position in the first place. If youāve got a group like that, you should probably avoid puzzles whose solutions depend on trial and error.
If it sounds like Iām making GMing puzzles out to be this big, scary monster, well, I kind of am. As a GM, puzzles are hard; there are a lot of ways to run them wrong and only a few to run them right. Youāve gotta know what youāre getting into!
On the topic of information, I relate the one and only time I allowed the party to undo 30 minutes of play.
The game was Exalted, and there was a tower that was on fire. I gave some information about how big the building was, potential people stuck inside, and the like. I expected them to do external firefighting things. The party, being the heroic Solars they were, dove in to get directly to rescuing. They realized rapidly that the damage they were taking was MUCH higher than expected and they would not be able to complete their planned mission, nor even a quarter of it.
They asked what was going on, and I said that they were the ones who dove directly into an inferno of blue flame. The party informed me that I never said it was blue flame. Oops.
Iām reminded of the possibly-apocryphal story of the party who openly walked into a dragonās lair and promptly ate a TPK because their GM had gotten so caught up describing the various wonders of the dragonās hoard, theyād entirely neglected to mention the dragon.
On a conversant side of things, it also helps if you as DM actually understand what a puzzle actually IS. I had a one-shot game run by a former friend who had set up a secret lock puzzle for a trapdoor with āELEVEN = NINEā written on the floor around the door, and bits of wood nearby that looked like thin branches and twigs, etc.
We spent 35 minutes discussing how to decode the clearly nonsense phrase of ELEVEN = NINE, absolutely CERTAIN it had to be a code or maybe a lateral thinking mathematics thing.
It was the password. We just had to write out that phrase in bits of wood. This āpuzzleā was the equivalent of hacking a computer with PASSWORD written on a post-it and stuck to the monitor.
That last one is a great example of when to accept a separate solution because I would have gone āAha! You can spell out the word NINE in all caps using exactly eleven sticks!ā
Have a guess as to what MY first idea wasā¦
DBZ-style fusion mechanic for player characters; on a successful fusion, for the next 30 seconds of combat the 2 players share a character sheet that includes all features from the original characters and the sum of their ability modifiers and hp; on a failed fusion, they share a sheet with no proficiencies, half the spell slots and the average of ability modifiers and hp
Iām pretty sure @5theditionhomebrewing already statted this up

What are some holidays in your setting?
Holidays can help make your world feel more alive. Here are some examples from my setting:
New Year: Everyone stays up until sunrise, celebrates, and gives gifts to those they are looking forward to spending the next year with. Also, everyone offically turns one year older (this replaces birthday celebrations)
Riot Day: On the anniversary of the riots against the government that had been infiltrated by an infernal cult, the people honor those who lost their lives fighting for justice
Hollyday: The dark elves that have escape the oppressive drow queendom celebrate the anniversary of the first enclave of elves escaping, led by the archmage Holly
I love these, what else do you have?
Iāve got Reclaimation Day, that marks the day the Drow first split off from the rest of the elves and made their own way in the world.
Here are all the other holidays I currently have:
Full Moon: When the moon of Ne is fully visible, worshippers of Ne burn some incense and thank the goddess for all the good that has happened recently
Fullest Moon: When both moons are fully visible, worshippers of Ne have a feast and thank the goddess for all the good that has happened throughout their life.
Day of Lovers: On the anniversary of Hildegard and Bonifatia falling in love, people spend time with their partner(s), or confess their love
RaāVaāQue: Every 6th day, people go to the temple and partake in mass. Originally it was only the Raven Queen that was worshipped on this day, but nowadays it is a day for all gods.
Iridus: To celebrate Iri leading the Gnomes out of the Underdark, they fast during the first week of mechanus, and then have one big celebratory feast on the last day.
Slaughter Day: One day each year, worshippers of demons and other chaotic evil gods are especially bloodthirsty and often kill people just for the fun of it
Day of Drow: On the anniversary of Queen Drow embracing Lolth, the Matriarchs give out small gifts to the daughters of the house
Feyday: Once a year, worshippers of the fey come together in large gatherings and dance until they canāt anymore. The fey often disguise themselves and partake in these festivities.
Day of Rebirth: On the day that the goddess Maxtra was reborn to be cleanes of her sins, her worshippers take baths with the entire worshipping community during which they confess their sins to be metaphorically reborn too
In addition to these there are various founding/independance days
I love these, and I need to do more work on this sort of thing myself. The one absolutely canon holiday in the setting is the Festival of Fears, a sort of Halloween-esque ādress up in costumes and have a big partyā feast day at the end of Harvest, marking the first day of Winter.
i still donāt get why bards are the horny class bc their main stat is charisma when the sorcerer, warlock, and paladin both have charisma as their main stat and like i can kinda get paladins bc the phb kinda has them look like youth pastors with a great sword but like warlocks literally cannot exist without some magical sugar daddy granting them magic powers and sorcerers are literally all descended from monster fuckers and yet iāve yet to see anyone make a warlock or sorcerer that was just the biggest fucking thot in the material plane and you know what you can make your paladin follow the god of fertility and boom they can be the sluttiest one in the entire multiverse have you met a catholic person???????
Draconic Sorcerers: āListen. My father fucked dragons. My grandfather fucked dragons. I hail from a proud line of dragonfuckers, and if you think for even a second I am going to deny my offspring these sweet-ass powers, or, more importantly, deny myself the ultimate pleasure of dragonfucking, you are 100% insane.ā
You you get it
My warlock is basically explained as āSarah Sanderson, but make her hornierā¦no, hornierā¦no, hornier.āĀ There is no peak horny for her.
Itās a running joke in the campaign Iām a player in at the moment that my bard is constantly being out-hornied by our Cleric of Sune.
i found a website where you can make your own achievements for dnd :)
these are the ones i made (minus carl, ehich was made by one of my dms)
Here's the link: http://www.naturalcrit.com/badges/
You are a devout Paladin trying to prevent the resurrection of a dark goddess. Ultimately you fail. When the goddess awakens, she claims that she doesnāt know who she is or what has happened. After a few days youāre struggling to determine if she actually has amnesia or if she is just lying.
It wasnāt what I had expected.
I had expectedā¦. Oh⦠ the usual things. Clouds of smoke, maniacal laughter, some monstrous being⦠they were always monstrous, whether fair or foul of face.
Not this. Not an egg.
It is already hatching, a jagged opening showing in the greyish, mottled shell. Even as I watch, small pale hands show, gripping the edge and breaking another piece of it away.
When I approach the egg and look down into it, I see a child. I would have guessed her at eight or nine, if I wasnāt seeing her hatching before my eyes. If I didnāt know she was Rekāna reborn.
When she sees me she lifts her little arms to me, like a toddler wanting to be picked up. āHelp⦠plāsā¦ā she says pitifully, her voice wavering and uncertain. Are they her first words? They must be. Even though I know what she is, they pull at my heart. This is a child. I have never harmed a child, even one that might grow to be the darkest of goddesses. When she looks up at me, I know I canāt do it now.
I open the egg a little further, so the sharp edges wonāt scrape her soft skin. When I lift her out with gauntleted hands, I try to be gentle. There were preparations made for her hatching, I can see⦠lengths of silk cloth to wrap her in, dishes of raw meat and bowls of what might be wine or blood. The priests and priestesses had their plans.
But they are dead or fled, and I wrap the child in my cloak and cradle her against one shoulder. She wraps her small arms around my neck trustingly, and I carry her out of the hidden temple to where I hid my horses. There I dress her in a spare shirt ā four of her would fit inside it, for I am big and she is very small ā and feed her her first meal. I donāt have fresh meat, and am not sure it would be wise to give it to her if I did, but I feed her bean porridge with salted meat, and a round of dry journey-bread, and she eats it eagerly.
I know I should destroy her. But she is a child.

A dragon hearse⦠a dragon hearse with harpoon launchers
a dragon hearse with harpoon launchers
it undoubtedly isā¦ā¦ a dragon hearse with harpoon launchers
I kind of love that D&Dās most iconic monster is this giant floating ball of eyes and teeth from a realm of inchoate madness beyond time and space that brings low entire kingdoms with its merest gaze, but rather than being unfathomably alien in its mentality, itās just really racist. Itās like the gameās designers came up with the most Lovecraftian monster they could possibly imagine, then gave it the personality of the actual H P Lovecraft.
people with only passing knowlege of D&D might not be aware- yeah, one of the defining traits about beholders is theyāre so xenophobic they are unable to form alliances with other beholders because theyre racist to each other to the point any beholder that does not look nearly identical to themselves is considered an inferior breed. and thats on top of seeing all non-beholders as vermin. and their problematic trait that if they dream about a beholder it physically creates the beholder they dreamed about so they typically create clones of people they hate they dont trust each other, they dont trust their own henchmen, they could easily turn entire continents into a pile of stone statues and ash but instead they primarily lurk in a cave alone wearing a tinfoil hat making elaborate doomsday prepper plans that go nowhere because their genius level intellect is primarily devoted to second guessing itself
The Runesmith has a pretty good (and funny) video about this! I thought it was really interesting
