I love using the "locate" command in Unix based systems to find what I am looking for.  It's powerful and easy to find all the instances of a file or name.  

There is a great GUI alternative that I found that I sometimes use when dealing with clients sites who don't have a "real" hosting environments.  It was news to me, so I figured I should share it for all the website developers who are struggling to locate all the instances of a file.  cPanel search feature is actually as strong as the locate command in my opinion.  Just open up the web based file manager, and "search" is right at the top.  Hopefully this will save someone some time.

On the web I believe we have 3 seconds or less to reach our client when they hit our web page.

Tonight I laid down in bed, mind going crazy as usual, and thought up the brilliant idea that I should install Wordpress using only my hacked iPhone. It worked and only took me 40 minutes.

In Cydia I grabbed OpenSSH, aDownloader, and also I grabbed FTPontheGo from the Apple App store.

I used cpanel on my hosting account and went to work.

The Apple iPhone actually has by default or through my jailbreak (most likely default) locate installed in terminal.

With a simple locator file "findme.txt" in FTPintheGo's file bin I tagged that location.

Then I downloaded "latest.zip" from Wordpress.org using aDownloader.

I ran "updatedb" from my SSH Terminal App, located the two files and copied the Wordpress zip file to the FTP app so I could upload it to the web server (this command was the most time consuming since typing in a 6-7 dir deep location takes time on my iphone).

I opened FTPontheGo and uploaded the latest.zip Wordpress archive. The app crashed during upload, but on relaunch the zip file had uploaded properly. (I am on wifi Internet at home BTW).

I then logged into cpanel, ran the database creation wizard, copied the credentials into Evernote and then in-archived the zip file using cpanel.

After that I simply browsed in Safari to the /dirwhereiplacedwp and pasted in the database credentials.

Done.

I think it took 40 minutes or less.

Being awake, bored, and with a hacked iPhone 4 can be fun :)

In my never ending search for a virtual desktop that follows me everywhere, I always look for apps like Lastpass, Evernote, Dropbox and Xmarks.  This week I found the coolest editor I have found for coding: ShiftEdit. 

ShiftEdit lets you store your sites and access them from anywhere.  ShiftEdit is the closest PC/Browser editor to the Mac Coda App that I use on my desktop.  It also lets you share sites with others.
