Hi, I just saw your post about Inda Navarrette playing in possession instead of Margaret and now can’t unsee it. Now I want to see Inda in the role. She was absolutely incredible in obsession. It’s performance that’s going to stay with me for along time. I have liked some of Margaret’s projects like the Maid and the Substance, but I think that’s the only projects that I’ve liked so far. Nikki deserved better and I also feel that Sarah deserved better too but some people seem okay or that she deserved what happened to her ( I don’t agree). I think it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. I will say that I think that I had a problem with the pacing, but It’s still a great movie and that ending is going to haunt me for along time.
I have question it’s about the cat. It’s probably a silly question but why do Nikki give Bear the cat ( I don’t want to spoil the movie lol) ?
i'm glad you agree with me! lol. i find margaret qualley to be one of the least-compelling actresses working today, and it is beyond frustrating to watch her be handed these high-profile roles that call for specific skills she demonstrably doesn't have. i'm afraid that we're going to be in another situation like with lily rose-depp and nick hoult in nosferatu, where the supporting male performance needlessly and consistently upstages the central (female) performance due to the frankly exaggerated gap in acting competence.
i can almost guarantee that margaret was hired for the possession role because she "looks" the part. luckily, so does inde. and, more importantly, inde has demonstrated that she is capable of tackling the physical and emotional range required for the role. obsession is a fine script (i especially love the monologues), but her performance is what makes the film work. without her, it would not be the phenomenon it is. i would be, i fear, on par with less-interesting feminist 101 navel gazing like companion.
vague slight spoilers: as for your question, i think the writer has niki do That Thing with the cat to illustrate for the audience that 1. she has no control over her actions (she is possessed by the specter of what bear wished for) and 2. the specter that possesses her is a kind of malevolent force that turns expressions romantic love into something nefarious. this is better illustrated, i think, by the hansel and gretel incest monologue. niki told sara that she saw bear as her little brother; her specter has eaten that thought and turned it into a violent, controlling, incestuous impulse. niki felt bad for bear when he lost his cat; her specter turns that empathy into something dark, because she cannot comprehend not wanting to literally consume the thing she loves.
