unfortunately hyrule propaganda worked on me in EoW because that zelda is just so delightful. Them going through the effort to show that the common townsfolk cared about her because she frequently associated with them personally is just too sweet for my little black heart to take. AND her actually putting in effort to build relations with the gerudo people? sorry. sorry. im defending this one royal. its bc she gets off her ass and gets shit done.

I do think it's strange when ppl call Zelda's decision to turn into a dragon 'out of character'. I think it's a deeply unsatisfying progression of her arc, but also entirely in character for her.

Zelda's main point of confluct in BOTW was being unable to awaken her powers, and the resulting tension between herself and her role as the princess. This conflict resolves by having her awaken her powers under a moment of extreme stress, in a desire to save Link. This end to her arc is, to me, nonsensical and unsatisfying, but nevertheless, BOTW concludes with Zelda ultimately fulfilling her duty. After awakening her powers, she sacrifices herself and uses her power to suppress Calamity Ganon, hoping to stave him off until Link returns to fight him. And it works.

So, in TOTK, why would it be OOC for her to swallow the secret stone? Of course she'd choose to sacrifice herself, using her power to ensure Link can return to fight Ganon. It worked the last time.

It's not satisfying to see the narrative reward her self sacrificial tendencies and frame them as the correct choice, but Zelda jumping to self sacrifice and believing it to be her destiny seems very in character to me. Because BOTW very much reinforced this conclusion.

#normally i love a self sacrificing character #i love characters who throw away their entire identity for the sake of idk beliefs or a cause #but the way they do it with zelda is so annoying to me and ive never been able to articulate it #because when i play through botw i got the idea that zelda's arc was her struggling to find her place in the world #and her lashing out at link because of her resentment for him seemingly having everything figured out #for him doing things effortlessly (in her eyes at least) for him 'playing his part' without a hitch #and it could have been so interesting #but in the end the way they resolve her conflicts isnt by her finding value in her own self its by having her..... repeatedly do this #and her issues with link? merely resolved by him saving her? and her being like haha well i guess i was just in love with him after all!#my power merely needed to be unlocked by the power of love!!#but scratch that because thats not even the conclusion shes drawn from it! like op says! in her mind she thinks the ONLY THING SHE CAN DO #IS TO GIVE HERSELF UP!#THAT SHES NOTHING MORE THAN A VESSEL! FOR LINK SPECIFICALLY EVEN #i dunno. is that supposed to be romantic??#it puts a bad taste in my mouth bc all throughout history in society women are just always expected to sacrifice everything about themselve #their minds their bodies their autonomy always for a man #am i reading too much into this kids game?#maybe. but if nintendo wants to start acting like theyre producing thought provoking art then im going to over analyze it. shrug!!

idk, hearing a voice i respect on reviewing horror literature bringing up that majora's mask is his second favorite zelda game oat, "right after totk!" literally floored me. Immediately started doubting my own taste.

But also at the same time I was still thinking "HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY GROUP THOSE TWO TOGETHER? AND PUT MAJORA'S MASK BEHIND THAT ONE?!"

So I really do wanna give totk a fair shake.

#like maybe its just the hype's fault #but also I'm still forever bitter that the zelda dragon thing like Did Not Matter At All #so I'm not hopeful my opinion on the game's story being bunz will actually change.
