Madeline Miller effectively flattens both Achilles and Patroclus into man and woman archetypes and i don’t see it talked about nearly as much as it should be. I’ll start this off by saying that I love The Song of Achilles and everything it was for me. My introduction to mainstream queer media, one of my first queer books, nostalgia, it was a lot. I really did love it and unfortunately still do. But if we want this world to change and grow we can’t ignore the issues just because we love the material.
My first point, Patroclus is ruined by TSoA. In the Iliad, he is a warrior. He’s older than Achilles, he’s a fighter, he’s *good* at what he does. He’s not a doctor. He’s not a caretaker. And he certainly doesn’t need Achilles to protect him from.. literally everyone??
Which brings me to my next point. Why on earth is Patroclus so inept in the book? Why is Achilles fighting all of his battles? Patroclus, who rode into war in Achilles’s armor, who had to be taken out by Apollo. Like.. guys come on

Hi guys, does anybody know more about that Antiloque guy who apparently shared the urn with Patroclus and Achilles ?
I didn’t read the Iliad (yet) or any others ancient sources but I feel like we barely talk about him.

as you might know, Patroclus had 9 dogs. 9!! that’s quite a lot. and none of them have names as far as i’m aware.

Patroclus being weak man in need of Achilles' protection must be the funniest misconception. In the Iliad, in his final battle he killed like approximately four dozen men (one of them a son of Zeus), tried climbing the Trojan war four times, stopped by Apollo, who popped up to tell him to quit that, then got divinely unarmored, his weapons shattered, got wounded by a spear (by a man too afraid of him, armorless and weaponless now, to finish him off) and THEN fatally wounded by Hector. That is not a man in need of anyone's protection, that is a beast
Achilles has just the right amount of reckless determination to beat any video game level for their kiddos 😤
