Some pointers I keep in mind while drawing difficult angles. Posted these on twitter last month.
I get asked a lot for tips with coloring black people, so i put together a little tutorial! (and bumps my kofi if you found this helpful)
i wasnāt really expecting this to get as much response as it did on twitter but it seemed like people found it helpful so!! here you go! some friends were asking about perspective so i drew up something real simplified on the basics of how i usually set up my perspective/bgs !!
Mysteria Academy Rosetta ("Manatta") by Kakage: Coloring Guide
In celebration of his 30.000 follower milestone, Japanese artist Kakage tweeted a step-by-step explanation on how he colored a recently posted picture of his favorite character Rosetta from Granblue Fantasy. By request of a friend, and with Kakageās permission, Iāve translated the steps so they may help other artists who want to learn from his process. The PSD-file with all the individual layers is available for purchase through Kakageās pixiv booth. For more content, visit his twitter or pixiv gallery!
(Edit: I originally posted the pictures from imgur uploads because tumblr tends to fuck up the image quality, but somehow this caused the pictures to not show up in reblogs, so I reupped them directly into tumblr. If the quality turns out bad, you can still check them on imgur)

FREE ART PROGRAMS
So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so Iāve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.
Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, Iāve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, Iām not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.
Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)
Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)
GIMP - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI [cracked]Ā - (Windows) (Mac)
Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)
iPaint - (Mac)
Paintbrush - (Mac)
Pencil - (Windows, Mac)
Paint.NET - (Windows)
Seashore [still in development, ver 0.5] - (Mac)
ChocoFlop - (Mac)
Inkscape - (Mac and Windows)
ArtRage [Demo] - (Mac and Windows)
OpenCanvas 1.1[must pay for 2.0] - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)
MyPaint - (Windows)
Krita - (Windows)
Vectorian [Supports Animation] - (Windows)
Pixia[Japanese, some English versions] - (Windows)
Asperite - (Windows)
Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)
SmoothDraw - (Windows)
TwistedBrush Open Studio - (Windows)
BOUNS - CTRL+Paint [Great for teaching all kinds of stuff, like how to use digital programs.]
If you know more free programs, please add onto this!
OpenToonzĀ has made many improvements since itās initial release! (Windows & Mac)
Medibang Paint is a comic drawing software forked from FireAlpaca mentioned earlier in this post, and is available for mobile devices as well! (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android)

Webtoon VS Tapas An in-depth comparison of what either platforms provide for non-premium creator use based on my experiences.Ā Sorry if itās hard or confusing to read. I really tried my best to organize it as best I can. Hope this is helpful nonetheless.Ā

Made this because my friend didnāt know this was a thing, so I thought maybe others donāt either? Hope it helps someone out!
Do you draw your comic on paper or digitally, or both? And whatās your process from concept to finished piece?
I use both equally. Drawing traditionally and digitally has different advantages for me so my process is a little convolutedhere it is:
step 1- do a thumbnail on paper to figure out page layout
2. model the background in maya if there is one
3. printout light version of just bg on my cheap paper. Iām drawing on 11 x 17in
4. sketch over printout
4.5 draw a better drawing if my first attempt sucked then scan that and place it in photoshop
5.get the figure looking acceptable in photoshop. I use a cintiq to draw
I have an easier time drawing digitally if I have an undersketch from a paper drawing. Donāt know why it just helps.
6. turn curves to red and printout on my fancy vellum bristol
7. final lines in pencil ( Iāve tried using real ink but I donāt enjoy it and I hate inking digitally) I ended up not liking how the arms on this panel looked so I fixed them with my red colerase pencilĀ
8. scan page and get rid of red channel
9. coloring! (bg isnāt finished here)
thatās my process!
overview of my comic style process
Hey fellow artist here, since Iāve followed your web comic for awhile I wanted some pointers in how you go about backgrounds and character expressions/poses? Ik they arenāt the most complex but they still remain charming nonetheless. And while I intend to make mine in a more āelaborateā style Iād still love to learn your thought process ^^
Thereās a lot of ground to cover, Iāll just show you some of my drawings, and tell you how to research it!
Draw some studies of different areas, try to break down the perspective, find the vanishing point, and re-apply it to your drawing, find the horizon line.Ā
Practice some different perspective methods.1 point perspective, 2 point perspective, 2 point verticle perspective, three point perspective. You can also research isometric perspective, 5 point, and fisheye!
remember that backgrounds can have as much personality as the characters, treat them how you treat your characters! Theyāre fun too!
I do a lot of gesture drawings in my free time especially when Iām warming up.https://www.quickposes.com/en/gestures/timedĀ you can practice on this website, it makes it very fun! Line of action is usually straight for dynamic poses and S curved for relaxed poses.
practice different body types, break down what people look like into simple shapes! when you stylize you can push these things further.Ā Learn the muscles of the face for expressions, and observe the faces of others.Ā I hope my drawings help you understand the stuff I do to practice, good luck with your art!
Some ESPECIALLY good stuff here!
Been doing a lot of pen doodling at work along with redrawing some old sketches lol
Comic Pages Storyboard Tutorial
OKAY SO! @biazerod asked me a little help on storyboarding and i decided to make this tutorialā¦iām not a professionist. so donāt take these as golden rulesā¦just advices! Ā and as always sorry for the englishĀ FIRST THING FIRST! the storyboard part is the most important phase in a comic page !Ā you can spend an entire day storyboarding! because itās the structure, the essence of the page!Ā hereās some tips : 1- a page can start from 1 panel/frame (called splash page!) until how many f*cking panels you can fit ! (some pages , especially in french comics/bd Ā can reach 24 panels/frames!) Exaple of splash pages:Ā
(these are from the green lantern,DC and the newest Thor ,marvel ) Splash pages are a priority of American comics, you rarely can find them in french Bd ! they represent a scene of impact! a fight! a revelation! be careful! use it only one if two times on a range of 50 pages! cuz it cut the narration!Ā instead in french bd Ā you find this :
first one is from Blacksad 2# and second one is from Atar GullĀ see how high the number of the frames is??Ā the number of frames is very important in a page because it decide the narration time! :D also it all depends on the kind ofĀ āādirectionāā you want to use on your comic! so be really careful when you decide the number of the frame!Ā LETāS PASS ON THE CREATION!Ā 1- when you have a page that contains more than 3 Frames ALWAYS. ALWAYS HAVE AN ESTABLISHING SHOT!Ā
the establishing shot is fundamental! BECAUSE READERS CAN UNDERSTAND WHERE THE CHARACTERS ARE!Ā DONāT DO A COMIC PAGE FULL OF FACES !Ā
DONāT DO THIS! LET THE CHARACTER BREATH! LET THE READER BREATH! PLAY WITH YOUR CAMERA! YOU HAVE THE POWER!Ā in a comic page, is important to put the camera far away from the character most of the time! play with the different shots! Ā
(found this on google)Ā WATCH MOVIES AND TV SHOWS.Ā lot of them can help you so much you have no idea! Ā a comic artist and a director do the same job when creating a story 2- Candy eye this is a tricky trick that can help you with the audience! when a character is saying something important or you have to introduce them , USE THE CANDY EYE DUDE.Ā
the candy eye is , basically, a bust shot where you show the character, their features , usually with a cool or a funny expression ( or of course it depends from the situation) and believe me WORKS 10/10 with the audience ;)Ā 3- HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANT SCENE IN THE PAGE!Ā
FINAL TIPS:Ā - when youāre doing dinamic poses try and try again! the first one isnāt always the best!Ā -USE REFERENCES. -A STORYBOARD PAGE CAN REQUIRE EVEN 4 HRS IF NOT AN ENTIRE DAY IF NOT AN ENTIRE WEEK. REMEMBER THAT THE STORYBOARD IS THE ESSENCE. AND THE REST IS DECORATION. - IMAGINE THE SEQUENCE! NOT THE SINGLE PAGES.Ā THINK IN SEQUENCES! imagine what would happen after the page you are creating! connect the various pages NOT THE SINGLES FRAMES !Ā YOUāRE CREATING A STORY! NOT A SINGLE ILLUSTRATION!Ā -AGAIN DONāT DO PAGE OF FACES. most important thing:Ā
if the page youāre creating it stresses you! STOP. continue it when you are in a better mood ,dude. our job requires lot of time and effort, but it should be the job we love.Ā so donāt stress yourself and keep calm. hope this is useful. donāt take this as golden rules, this is just the way i work :)
