I feel that all the people who say they don't understand Tenet don't understand it for a very different reason to what they think the reason is.
[spoilers follow]
Like, they think that they're not understanding the time-inversion stuff, and though I'd argue a large portion of the film is bogged down in techno-babble where it doesn't need to be (and the big battle could have been handled more interestingly) everything visually on the screen is more than enough to understand how the concept works on first viewing.
But then detractors are saying Nolan has gone too high concept at the expense of Character. Even Mark Kermode, who enjoyed the film, claims there's nothing philosophical about it, as previous Nolan works have been.
But I'd argue that this is a film in which Character doesn't actually matter. Washington's lead is only named as The Protagonist, after all.
Instead the film is about the philosophical theme of predeterminism. What's happened has happened, and going into the past does not - can not - change that, because everything in the past has already happened, even if it was someone from the future doing it.
Time and again Nolan shows us this. The woman diving off the boat. The conversation between The Protagonist and Priya where he calls her out for lying, but she says she'll have to in order for him to have done what he's done. Neil going back into the bunker at the end so he can save The Protagonist. Even all the talk of The Grandfather Paradox - it's a Paradox, it literally cannot come to pass. They literally cannot lose because otherwise there wouldn't be a future for Sator to come back from.
The Algorithm doesn't matter or even need to be explained, it's literally a McGuffin - the catalyst of the plot. The characters are purposefully two dimensional (though I'd argue Debicki plays one of the more fleshed out Nolan Women). There's a reason Neil is so suave, a reason Branagh hams it up - these are all archetypes, not real people. The film isn't about the characters (the fact that The Protagonist is unnamed is that he's an audience surrogate, being thrown into this world alongside the rest of us).
The film is about predeteriminism, what's happened has happened, so don't try to change the past, you can't no matter how much technology you have. It is the now that matters. It is only the now that can change the future.
Seven things that will be gamified
1. The house of the future will have an exclusive tie-in deal with Nintendo. As a result, your pipes will be full of Mario. Every morning, you will wake to the sound of banging from the radiator. Mario is in there again. He never remembers where that pipe leads. Now he is in literal hot water and you’re probably going to have to switch the heating off again before you boil a beloved game character.
2. In the gamified future, Amazon will make deliveries in crates. Book? Metre-tall crate. Pair of shoes? Metre-tall crate. Book and a box of chocolates? Two metre-tall crates on top of each other. No longer will you have the option of leaving your parcel unopened. You will need to open it to get out of the door. Of course, you can also use it to get onto the roof.
3. You will want to get onto the roof because there are coins up there. In an innovative campaign designed to improve physical activity, salaries and other payments are no longer delivered straight to bank accounts. Instead, coins will appear in hard-to-reach places at random intervals.
4. House-building will be gamified by introducing special bricks which disappear as soon as a full horizontal row is made. Houses can only be built by leaving selected gaps in each row; however, as soon as the bricks reach roof height, the builders will be deemed to have lost. Therefore the most skilled builders can never finish a house, but must keep working endlessly. It is a cunning scheme to move towards full employment. Or it would be, were many future houses not built by robots. However, it has certainly increased employment levels at robot-construction factories.
5. If you can catch every cold and flu virus across the course of a Winter season, you may get the chance of catching a special limited-edition norovirus. Better yet, you can set the cold and flu viruses to fight against each other. It’s almost always worth it to go down with the flu, because one flu can reliably win in battle against three or four colds.
6. Hospitals are repurposed as mazes. If you can find your ward, you may or may not be rewarded with extra health. If you explore the rest of the maze, there may be additional goodies to find; for example, limp sandwiches, mysterious items of public art, or a water dispenser.
7. For no reason that can adequately be discerned, the rewards for jumping on mushrooms in the future world are substantial. It is a terrible problem for supermarkets. As soon as they put out a tray of mushrooms, some hob-nailed chancer comes along and puts their feet in it. Hardly a mushroom farm in the world has remained financially solvent. Come Autumn, everyone is out on the woods looking for mushrooms to stomp on. Worse yet, the lesser-spotted gnome has been squished almost to extinction. But the last few gnome advocates have put together an investigative team and they are determined to follow the mushroom money trail back to wherever it comes from. Who knows what murky secrets they will reveal?

d-2 to start of exams... really stressed because everything was pushed forward this year by one week and my school’s exams start like,, 3 weeks before that of other schools which means a lot less time for revision! but that’s life so sometimes when life gives you lemons you just gotta deal with it
👻 today feels like a b/w day lol... wasn’t as productive as i wanted myself to be which is slightly worrying since exams have already started but oh well,, good luck everyone who has exams and for the lucky souls who don’t,, start revising now so you don’t have to chiong (singlish for “rush”) your revision the weekend before (like me!!)

Barriers To Intimacy, Olivia de Recat
how to study when you REALLY don’t want to
we’ve all been there. You have a paper due in the morning, it’s 10 pm, and you’re sitting at your desk, feeling dead. Or maybe it’s 3 pm, and you’re just SO overwhelmed with an endless to do list and so many pages to read or annotate or take notes on that you just think,
screw it. I just won’t do anything.Â
Listen, I get it. I understand. I LOVE learning, but I often find myself bogged down by homework, that incessant, painful reminder that you’re being forced to learn. Nobody likes that.
So below are some of my tips for studying, especially when you really, really don’t feel like doing it.
What’s your absolute dream school? Columbia? That’s amazing. Harvard? Incredible. Florida State? Awesome. Wherever you want to be in two years- whether it be college, grad school, teaching, etc. Picture yourself learning in your dream learning environment, doing what you love the most. Maybe for you, that daydream means picturing yourself in a New York City coffee shop, working on Literature homework from Barnard College. Or maybe it means cramming biology in a crowded, raucous library at UMass. Whatever makes you get excited about learning- take the fuel you feel from those daydreams and use it to fan the flames of your love for learning.Â
Treat every single class like it’s your absolute favorite class ever. Listen. I don’t care if you have the shittiest teacher on planet earth. I don’t care if you couldn’t give less of a fuck about quantum physics or functions or whatever. You have the privilege and the opportunity to learn anything and everything, and we could all do good to stop taking that for granted. Treat AP Calculus like it’s your favorite subject EVER, even when- especially when it feels like pulling teeth. But how? You might be asking. The secret is that it’s really, really not that hard. There are so many ways to motivate yourself to do that subject you’ve been putting off for days, and you know it!! Use studyblr to find inspiration for That Subject™, make a study group, trap yourself in your dorm/library/coffee shop until you just finish one problem set, just START. Chances are when you see other people being productive and getting shit done in that subject (cough studyblr cough) you’ll want to do it too.Â
Eat, sleep, and live. Listen to me: you HAVE to stop killing yourself to do more school. Your to-do list ISN’T GOING TO JUST GO AWAY. There’s always going to be things you have to do and things you could be stressed about. But stress, school, and homework are not excuses to abandon self-care, friendships and having a social life. Go out with your friends! Go to the movies! Go to that football game! Get the important stuff done and stop worrying about your endless list! Having somewhere to go will motivate you to get done faster, and you’re going to feel a lot better after going out and having fun than sitting at home alone procrastinating. Chances are, you’ll be more energized to get some work done too.Â
Pay attention to what your body’s telling you. Switch out midnight iced lattes for smoothies and fruit. Eat lots of food that makes you feel good, healthy and fulfilled. Stop snacking on the same 4 chips every time you study and start learning how to fuel your body and your brain. If you know you can’t eat a full breakfast before school, find things you can eat, and I mean MORE THAN JUST COFFEE STRAIGHT FROM THE POT. Track what you eat for an entire week, and I mean EVERYTHING. Track your water intake, coffee intake, and soda intake. On top of food tracking, also track your mood, productivity, and overall feeling of wellbeing. At the end of the week, see what’s up! Look for patterns, dehydration, food inconsistencies, gross stuff you eat a lot, things you want to change, all of it. And then actually MAKE THE CHANGES.
I know I’m going to sound like your mom friend here, but that’s kind of what I am, so: drink👏🏻more👏🏻water👏🏻!!!!!!! I cannot STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!!!!! FUEL YOUR BODY!!! YOU WILL FEEL BETTER!!!
in conclusion…
- picture yourself learning in your dream learning environment
- picture the payoff, you doing what you want to do - nursing or teaching or building fancy ass AI robotos or whatever it is
- do NOT take your education for granted!!!! learning is such an opportunity and not everyone gets it
- treat yourself like a normal human being. take care of yourself. shower. eat.
- pay attention to your body. pay attention to what you need. pay attention to what you WANT
- drink your water, listen to some jazz, and just start somewhere.
- small progress is still progressÂ

d-2 to start of exams... really stressed because everything was pushed forward this year by one week and my school’s exams start like,, 3 weeks before that of other schools which means a lot less time for revision! but that’s life so sometimes when life gives you lemons you just gotta deal with it
Hey guys, so I’m nearing the end of my senior year, and it’s been great so far! I accomplished my academic tasks efficiently and didn’t burn myself out, and I think the main contributor to my success as a student is my organization system. This system has been refined throughout my high school years, but I think now I’ve finally found the most effective methods.
Please remember that this isn’t the only organization system you can adopt; this is just the one that works the best for me, and I hope that by sharing it with you, you’ll gain a new perspective on how to stay organized as a high school student.
The first thing I wanna talk about is my notebook system, which I briefly mentioned in my Guide to Note-Taking.
My notebook system comprises three types of notebooks: the Everything Notebook, the subject notebook, and the revision notebook.
The Everything Notebook
The first stage is in-class notes. I only bring one notebook to school every day. I call it my Everything Notebook, and this is where I write down all of the notes I take in class. This way, I don’t have to lug around six notebooks where I’m only going to use a few pages in each of them that day.
Subject Notebooks
At the end of the day, I would revise my notes and compare them to the syllabus so I know where we are in the learning process. I would then transfer my class notes from my Everything Notebook to my different subject notebooks. This is stage two. I also start to jazz up my notes because I use the notes in my subject notebooks to study for tests.
In addition to my class notes, I include material from my teachers’ notes that they might not have elaborated on, as well as points in the syllabus (I’m currently taking A2) that were only glazed over briefly, or not at all, in some cases. (Note: this does not mean they completely skip a chapter or topic; it’s more like they missed a few bullet points that should be in my notes but aren’t. An example would be if we’re learning about phenol reactions and the teacher forgot to mention the use of FeCl3 as a test for phenol.)
Revision Notebooks
Stage three comes a little later, when exam week is just around the corner. Essentially, I rewrite and improve my notes from my five different subject notebooks into a single revision notebook or binder. (Recently, I’ve opted for a revision notebook because they’re lighter and easier to carry around.)
Because my teachers don’t always teach in the order of the syllabus, the first thing I do is organize my notes according to the syllabus. I would then fill in any other missing gaps in the material that hadn’t been filled in stage two.
When compiling material for my revision notebook, I use as many sources as possible: my own notes, my teachers’ notes, youtube videos, online sites, and my favorite, the mark scheme! I add in some answers from past papers (explanations only, so no calculations) mainly to secure marks. It’s safer to memorize definitions straight from the mark scheme than from the textbook or from handouts. I also do this to ease my memorization, especially for topics that require lengthy explanations. It’s a lot easier to remember the 6 points I need to explain the principles of NMRI than to remember everything in the four-page handout my teacher gave me.
Folders and binders are essential to organizing your papers. Some people keep a single accordion folder for all their papers, but for me it’s just too heavy to carry around all the time. The same goes for subject folders that are brought to school every day.
Instead, my binder/folder system comprises my Everything Folder and my subject binders.
The Everything Folder
The folder I carry with me to school every day is this A4 folder I got from Tokyu Hands. It has 5 pockets, one for each day of the week, so all the papers I receive on Monday will go behind the first divider, and so on.
Some people also keep blank papers in their folders; I don’t because my school has its own lined paper and graphing pads that I keep under my desk that I use if a teacher asks us to do an assignment on those papers. If I do work at home, I prefer to just use a plain A4 paper or a legal pad.
Subject Binders
At the end of the week, I’ll sort my papers into my subject binders. Sometimes I’ll keep some papers in the folder if I think I’ll be needing it the next week. This usually only applies to worksheets because all my teachers’ notes are available on Google Classroom, so I can access them even if I don’t physically have them.
Each of these binders have sections inside them:
Physics: 1 for handouts, notes, and tests, 1 for Paper 4 (Theory), 1 for Paper 5 (Practical Planning). I included extra tabs to mark the different topics in the handouts section.
Chemistry: same as Physics.
Economics: 1 for Paper 3 (MCQ), 1 for Paper 4 (Case Study and Essay). A lot of my Economics material is online, though.
English: 1 for Paper 3 (Text and Discourse analysis), and 2 for Paper 4 (Language Topics, which includes 1 for Child Language Acquisition, 1 for World Englishes). Past papers, handouts, and notes all go under their respective topics.
Mathematics: I just keep everything together because I never revise math and just constantly do past papers.
This makes it easier for me to revise each subject because I can just take one binder with me instead of a messy folder with everything just shoved in there.
I keep a magazine file for each of my A-Level subjects (English and Mathematics are combined). All my textbooks, revision guides, and subject notebooks are kept here, so if I need to revise one subject, that’s the magazine file I’ll take out.
These magazine files prevent any small things (like my book of flashcards) from being shoved to the back of my bookshelf, or materials from different subjects from getting mixed up.
In my senior year, I mostly plan using this app called Edo Agenda. It syncs across all my devices for free and has all the features I need: a to do list to organize tasks, monthly and weekly calendars to organize events, a journal to organize notes and memos.
I used to bullet journal regularly, but it takes too much time during weekdays, so now I just bullet journal for the therapeutic effects it gives me, and I use an app for organizing tasks and events. Sometimes at the end of each week, I’ll transfer my tasks to my bullet journal and then decorate the page, but again, this is just for its therapy.
Organizing your school supplies is just as important as organizing your papers and notes. With a more organized backpack and pencil case, you won’t waste time looking for your things at the bottom of an abyss.
Pencil Case
I don’t find it necessary to bring so much stationery to school unless I plan on making notes at school (usually during revision week).
Backpack
Because we’re already in the revision term, I don’t really carry a lot of things in my everyday backpack, just the following:
Pencil case
Everything Notebook
Everything Folder
Revision notebook
Kindle
Phone
Wallet
Earphones
Calculator
Speaker
Drinking bottle
A pouch with things like a hairbrush, pads, and lip balm
And that’s all for now! I hope this post will help you organize your school life (if you haven’t already) or at least provide some useful insights on some ways to stay organized as a high school student.
