Yuri's Birthday Bash

Summary:

Bar-hopping (and trying to evade Viktor and Yuuri) in Stockholm, Yuri and Otabek make a series of increasingly ridiculous bets. It’s all fun and games until the scores are settled and Yuri has to put his money where his mouth is.

“No bike tonight?” Yuri asks, doing a piss-poor job of concealing his disappointment, even to his own ears.

It’s not that he isn’t also excited to see Otabek again. Obviously he is. Only getting to see his best friend in person once every three months is shit. But there’s just something about being on the bike with him. A thrill he doesn’t get anywhere else.

And he’s not going to examine that too closely tonight.

Otabek doesn’t seem offended. He’s probably used to it by now, anyway. “I’m planning on drinking tonight,” he replies with a chuckle.

Well. Yuri can’t argue with that.

Or with the feeling of warmth that blooms outward from his hand when Otabek grabs it and tugs him out into the streets of Stockholm.

As he’s pulled through the hotel foyer, he barely registers the distant sound of Yakov yelling at him to “get back here” and “remember your responsibilities” and whatever else. What he does register is Yakov yelling at Viktor to “get after him.”

He looks at Otabek, who seems to have heard the same thing.

“Run,” Otabek says, looking and sounding like an action movie star.

Yuri nods, and then they’re off, hands still clasped in each other’s.

“Hell, yeah, I’d wanna be me too!” He yells to the nearest bystander who, oh, shit, happens to be that kid. 

The kid who, he notices way too late, is already looking upset, and now that Yuri’s gloated in his face, is starting to cry. His stomach lurches. And oh, shit, his English sucks, but he’s pretty sure the attendant is admitting to Otabek that the kid had been trying for the bear all day.

“At least we’re moving,” he mutters, speaking before he thinks too deeply about the way that Yuri makes him feel safe. Moving towards a torture device from Jahannam.

“Yeah, but it’s awkward,” Yuri whines, hitting the kid with his absolute best and well-rehearsed death glare. She blinks and takes another bite of her apple, getting caramel-slobber all over her nose and her chin, but remains completely unfazed, giant-saucer eyes locked on to her target.

The words exploded out of Yuri’s mouth before he could stop them, echoing around the conversation pit, which Chris insisted on calling the fucking passion pit to everyone’s disgust. It took everything in him not to cringe back at how loud he was, even over the shitty music playing in the background. Especially when he flicked his gaze over to Otabek, who had broken out of his haze at the sudden outburst, suddenly stiff at Yuri’s side.

He hated that he’d disturbed him.

But he sure as fuck wasn’t about to apologize to Phichit, who was clearly lying through his ridiculously white teeth.

Still, he knew Otabek had trouble with conflict and loud noise, that he was only at this party because of Yuri. Under the coffee table — a couple of breeze blocks stacked together and topped with a half-door Leo picked up on the side of the road — he snuck a hand onto Otabek’s knee and gave it a gentle squeeze by way of apology, holding there just long enough to feel Otabek relax a little before he took his hand away.

“Shut up!” Yuri snarls. He made it a point to learn those words in particular, in almost every language. “I… I saw your dad cry!” he shoots back, also in English. It made more sense in the Russian in his head, he thinks, but the intended vitriol definitely comes across. Probably. 

Otabek is in the bed next to Yuri, their conversation for the day already dried up. Yuri’s chest hurts, and they try to take deep breaths but they can feel their hands shaking. Yuri knows they have to jump the gun now or have a full-blown panic attack five seconds later. “Do you think you could stop calling me your boyfriend?”

“Not really,” Yuri replies with a frown. As much as he adores his best friend – and he really does, in every sense of the word – he isn’t sure he has the mental capacity right now for another one of Otabek’s thought experiments. “I mean, they’re fine, I guess, but I’m more of a chicken nugget man.”

“Yura.”

“In any case, we literally just ate 20 minutes ago. I might actually explode if I have to think about food right now.”

“Yura,” Otabek snorts.

“What?”

“I was trying to say something like… poetic.”
