Otabek dismounts, but doesn’t take his helmet off. He will not be here long. He does, however, remove his gloves, shoving them into the pocket of his leather jacket.
There’s a plain silver band on his finger, and he stares at it. It was supposed to be a promise of love and a new, better life. Instead, it’s a reminder of trust broken, of lies and infidelity. And that, once again, he had not been enough.
It was just a piece of shit picked up in a variety store for 600 Tenge and it wasn’t even genuine silver. His ex said there wasn’t money for anything more, and that was fine with Otabek, actually. It had been so romantic and bohemian at the time. They were two young artists, declaring their love despite all the struggles.
The metal burns his skin in the icy mountain air, and he wrenches the ring from his finger, gripping it until it makes a dent in his palm.
“Fuck you, Aslan Aidarbaev,” he roars, but the wind carries the words away as he tosses the shitty ring into the gorge. “Fuck you.”
He gives himself a moment to absorb what he’s done, to feel the emptiness in his palm, on his finger, in his heart. Then he tugs his gloves on, gets back on the bike, and speeds away.
