My favourite math fact is that 0.9999999.. is equal to 1. Exactly. Not approximately. Not as a rounded number. 0.9999 (recurring) is exactly 1.
Question. How the fuck does that work?
I tried explaining it here:
Hereâs another perspective on why .999⌠repeating is exactly equal to 1.
For any two distinct real numbers, we can always find a rational number strictly between them, i.e. that rational number must be able to be expressed as a terminating decimal or a repeating decimal. To be clear, that rational number is strictly between the two values; it is not allowed to be equal to either.
Suppose k is a rational number strictly between 1 and 0.9999âŚ. If this is possible, then, I can write k exactly as either a decimal with finite digits, or I can write k as a repeating decimal. The problem is, there are no decimals with finite digits between 1 and 0.999⌠, and there is no way to write a repeating decimal that is greater than 0.999⌠and still less than 1. Either way, a k strictly between 1 and 0.999⌠does not exist. The only way this can be true is if those two numbers are not actually distinct. That is to say, 1 = 0.999âŚ..
i truly appreciate how math seems like itâs this infallible always-true only-one-answer thing, when in reality math is just like:
This holds for the reals, but not the surreals.
If you see a homeless person begging on the street and you want to help them in the most effective way, give them cash. I know lots of you rather give them clothing or food or other things along those lines because âtheyâll just use the money for drugs/alcohol and thatâs not what it should be used onâ, but really, GIVE THEM MONEY. And if they do end up using that money to buy more drugs or alcohol, then thatâs actually GOOD.
I donât think many of you realize that withdrawal can fucking kill people to go through when they are homeless. Withdrawal from alcohol/opiates/benzodiazepines/etc can have very dangerous symptoms like seizures, extreme dehydration, the inability to regulate body temperature, convulsions, etc, that are hard enough to deal with when you can go to the hospital for help or you have a home you can be comfortable in, so imagine dealing with these symptoms while literally having to sleep on the street with nothing.
Even if the withdrawal doesnât kill them, a person canât function while going through it. Doing the things that might help better their situation, like looking for a job or applying for any aid, are impossible to do when withdrawal is impeding your ability to function.
On top of that, most homeless people are mentally ill and have no way to manage it. Homeless people canât afford medication since they most likely do not have insurance. A bottle of cheap whiskey can be $5 and a dose of heroine can be $10 vs the hundreds of dollars medications for different mental illnesses can cost. Let them self medicate in the only way thatâs available to them. Let them drink if it makes the voices calm down. Let them do heroine if it means they wonât have any episodes or meltdowns. They deserve to use whatever drugs they need to self medicate when they literally have no other options.
Another thing I know a lot of you wonder is âwhat if they use my money to buy drugs and then they OD and die?â But thatâs not really how this shit works. Most homeless people only buy enough drugs to function and be well, whatever money is left tends to go to other necessities. Also, with the way drug tolerance works, a lot of homeless people rarely ever have enough money to buy enough drugs to cause an OD because theyâve been addicts for so long that their tolerance is very high. On top of that, the quality of the drugs theyâre able to buy isnât usually that high, which is another factor that plays into why they arenât likely to OD.
Give homeless people money above all else unless they tell you that giving them other things is okay. Stop acting like you know better than they do about where their money should be going. Stop concern trolling them when you donât have the slightest clue how addiction and homelessness works. Stop looking down on homeless people when you see them drinking or nodding out.
GIVE HOMELESS PEOPLE CASH.
THANK YOU In addition to the above:
The food you want to give them could kill them, give them money so that they can buy food that wonât The stuff you want to give them instead of money they may already have, let them buy what they need. Old clothes and toothpaste wonât pay for travel, or a phone call to a loved one, and it certainly wonât pay for a homeless shelter (yes, they do charge!) so that they can avoid freezing to death during the night.Â
Just give homeless people money please.Â

i dont understand half of the words here but god if this isnât the funniest thing iâve ever read
im pretty sure red and blue werenât programmed but just sort of⌠mutated into cartridges
Red and blue are why QA teams were invented
for fuckâs sake they werenât badly programmed. They were bleeding edge. Itâs so easy to forget that but Red and Blue were literally pushing the limits of what they could fit on the cartridge. They used every trick in the book. In that way, the programming behind them is GENIUS. Itâs frankly a lost art, in this era where hardware is insanely cheap and scalable, when you can just keep throwing more resources at the problem. But Red & Blue were when programmers had to get creative. Not currently using a piece of memory? Repurpose it, we canât just leave it lying around. Only have a couple registers? Juggle them, keep careful track so we can restore them when we needed. Does this data need to be single purpose, or can we also use it for, say, a seed value? And all this WORKED. I guarantee you 99% of children playing this never saw a bug in casual play. MODERN games are buggier by a landslide. Remember when X&Y came out and there was an ENTIRE CITY you couldnât save in because itâd DELETE YOUR SAVE? Imagine that happening in the days of Red&Blue. It couldnât have. I can turn on my red cartridge TODAY and have it work. And the bugs that did exist, those edge cases they missed? They produce this behavior because the game REFUSES TO CRASH. Sure, you can make it crash if you try hard enough, but goddamn itâs resilient. It just plugs away with garbage data in memory for as long as possible. Y'all looking down from your 64-bit quad-core smartphones with 128GB SD cards like Red & Blue were programmed by amateurs. What, you also going to bitch that the Wright Brothers didnât make a jet engine? These are artifacts from pioneers who wrote the goddamn book that others would use as gospel. Sincerely, a pissed off goddamn programmer.
I feel like people still donât quite understand, so hereâs some context:
This post, including the icons and hyperlinks and formatting, takes up more space on your browser than the entire Pokemon Red cartridge could hold
If youâve ever made an image that was more than 2000 pixels in each dimension, that image was larger than the entire game
if you open a single tweet in your browser, that tab by itself will typically be larger than all four of the Gen 1 games combined
Fun-ish Fact: this is Arm Joe (Aa Mujou), a fighting game based loosely upon Les MisĂŠrables. By which, I mean itâs basically Jean Valjeanâs Bizarre Adventure. When asked in an interview as to why he spent five years working on it, Takase, the sole developer of the game, said it was because he had no friends.
Notable characters include: Cosette (that fights like Dio Brando and uses Valjean as a Stand), a stuffed toy, and Robo Jean Valjean (because reasons).
