I miss you, Mama. You were so good to me and I didn’t appreciate you like I should have. You’re gone now and I miss you so much. Yeah, you weren’t perfect, but you were always there for me. You weren’t even angry at me when I spent three thousand years avoiding you. I miss you so much, Mama ~ Persephone (Hadestown)
I have a lot of guilt because the time loop was definitely a thing; only a few of us knew it was happening. Hermes and me, maybe Mama. Some of the other gods might have known, but I doubt they knew why, nor cared.
I remember the last time just begging Hermes to stop; I couldn't do it anymore, I couldn't keep going through all that again. I couldn't keep going back to Hades hurting me, I couldn't keep seeing Orpheus being beaten and then crushed like that again and again — even if he couldn't remember, I still couldn't handle seeing him so unwell over and over. Hundreds of times, again and again, I couldn't, and I just begged Hermes to stop making it happen.
I feel awful, I hate the idea that I could have stopped Orpheus from getting a happy ending with Eurydice, but it was breaking me. I broke down crying to him during that last summer, begging him to let it go; I'm not sure he realised I remembered before then, but he apologised for putting me through it all and promised he wouldn't make it happen again. I'm so sorry, Orpheus, I just couldn't keep going through that again.
Hades used to help me care for my hair, the last time for well over two thousand years being just a few days before we lost our first child. It was always one of my favourite times, we didn't have to talk and he was always so gentle and careful; we could just care for one another, and I loved that. I always felt lost doing it in our bath during autumn and winter thereafter because it had been such an important thing for us and suddenly it just... wasn't.
I know Orpheus caught me crying more than once, particularly as a child, and I have a feeling he asked Hermes why, because I never would have told him; I didn’t want to worry him, he was a child and didn’t need to know I was chasing after a love long gone.

When I was still singing Orpheus to sleep, I'd usually end up crying by the time he fell asleep; Hermes caught me on the regular, either as I was leaving his room, or because I'd be wiping my eyes when I made my way down to the bar. He'd pour me a drink and offer to talk about it, but I never would, though I really should have. I do appreciate that he never tried to force the issue though, but I knew he knew, even when I wouldn't say anything.
Hadestown, Hadestown, he became so self-absorbed that he felt it necessary to remind everyone just by the changing the name that it was his town. It was Tartarus, and he stopped doing his actual damn job just to turn it into nothing but mines and his wall.
The one time Hades caught me up on the wall was so vastly different to everything else that had happened since we lost our child, and I feel I should be far angrier at him for it than I was or am.
I was far too drunk to tell up from down, and I remember just shouting at him that it was all his fault and he should just let me die. I didn't notice (probably the wine) him getting closer to me until he grabbed my hand and I snatched it back; I told him I wasn't doing it anymore, and stepped back off the wall. He caught my wrist and pulled me back up and into his arms, and wouldn't let me go, no matter how much I kicked and screamed for him to just let me die.
I eventually settled down enough to stop trying to fight him in his iron grip and let him cradle me there — it took a while for my anger to burn out, and by the time I did, I realised that he was crying. Apparently it took me trying to kill myself to get even a glimpse at the man I married again, for the first time in a long, long while; I should have been angrier at that than I was, but all I felt was relief, and love. All I could do was hold him close and cry with him.
He carried me all the way back home once he'd stopped crying enough he could see. It was so comforting to be back in his arms like I used to be so often when we were young, and as soon as we were inside, I pulled his face into mine and he carried me to bed; he made me feel more loved that night with his just eyes — let alone anything else — than he had in centuries combined. I just wish it'd lasted more than for the night.
Sometimes I wondered if I should just climb the wall and throw myself off it; there were a few times I got all the way to the top, just about ready to do it. Most of them, I just sat there and drank until I felt numb enough to climb down and make my way back to my husband for a beating, but once... once, he found me there, and was up there with me in a flash, and that time almost ended terribly.
There was plenty more times that I found myself at the bottom of it before breaking down in tears and waiting for the bottle to numb my senses again; plenty of those nights I just slept there once all the alcohol was gone.
It was fairly normal for me to come back covered in bruises, and not uncommon for me to have accompanied broken bones. I could hide bruised cheekbones and black eyes with makeup, most others with clothes, but it was hard to hide bruised or scraped knuckles or broken bones, particularly from Hermes, who was particularly attentive, and knew better than to believe me when I said I’d fallen or whatever other excuses I came up with.
The first time he saw any of the bruises, he was furious — the first time I came back with anything broken, I had to beg and try to physically stop him from marching down to Hadestown himself to give Hades a piece of his mind. I was his baby sister, and he hated that I was hurt, especially hurt by my husband. While even he could admit he probably didn’t stand a chance against Hades himself, he was most certainly ready to physically fight him for me.

As I started drinking more and more, Hades would get angrier and angrier at me for it; we would argue the moment I got back from wherever the fuck, completely plastered, for gods know how long. I always lost, entirely on account of him being far bigger and stronger than me.
Fucking hypocrite was often drunk too.
I kept trying every now and again to fight back against Hades, and it always ended badly; it’s usually what prompted the more severe injuries I sustained. Punching him was always a bad idea because not only was I fairly weak, but he was also mostly built of muscle and could withstand pretty much any hit I could land; I was more likely to break my knuckles than to actually hurt him.
Sometimes, I’d try and glass him, and if I was quick enough, I’d get in a good hit and draw blood — if I wasn’t, he’d catch my wrist mid-swing and rip the bottle out of my grip, then punish me tenfold than if I’d just left it be.
If I closed my eyes and tried real hard, when you were sleeping, I could imagine it was how it used to be. I could pretend you were still gentle. I could convince myself you still loved me.
Until you woke up.
Orpheus had been working on his song all winter, so I hadn't even known he even remembered what I sang to him as a baby; he didn't sing it around me in the time I was there — not that he was hiding it from me, but I was only there for a couple of weeks at most, so we hadn't really gotten the time to sit down for him to show me what he was working on.
I know you were grieving, I know you were angry and in pain, but I should never have been the outlet for your rage. Those poor people you brought there should never have been the outlet for your rage.
It was no one’s fault, Hades. Not yours, not mine, not theirs. It was just a sad twist of fate. ~ Persephone (Hadestown)

There were a few times Hermes tried to convince me to leave Hades; he stopped eventually because he was my brother, he knew I was stubborn as an ox, and when I said my word was final, I meant it. Even if I tried to leave Hades, I doubt it would have worked — Hades would have either tried to drag me back, or I would have gone crying back to him; I loved him more than life itself, even if he didn't love me anymore. Doesn't matter how shattered my heart was in his hands, I didn't want to be without him.
I worried Hermes more and more every year; I was always later and later, drunker and drunker, high off my head. He didn’t like to indulge my habit, but I think he knew I mightn’t’ve survived without it, which is why I wasn't banned from the bar.
He tried to get me to talk more about everything going on with Hades and I, but I was always closed about it. He knew vague details, some because I’d told him, others from observation; he’d seen bruises, he’d helped treat a broken collarbone, and all manner of other things Hades had caused. Even he knew when I needed a drink; I didn’t like talking about it, because I was still deeply in love with Hades, I didn’t want to admit he hurt me. If I didn’t talk about it, it wasn’t real, right? Probably the only thing I actually admitted to Hermes was when I’d miscarried.
