hello! random question not related to 13 tonys in one of your posts you said that barrett (i'm assuming barrett wilbert weed) is problematic. what do you mean by this/what has she done? I'm genuinely curious as I haven't heard anything about this-
Oh ok!
um so i’m not the best person to ask and i’m sure that there are many other people whom these messages affect more directly but basically my grasp on her is this:
a while ago, in the heat of the blm movement, she posted something on her instagram story that was evidently supposed to be supporting the movement and bipoc but she talked a lot more about how she related to them. she mentioned being relatively low class and her grandmother being italian in a discussion and platform that should have been for poc. this was the main thing that tipped me off the barrett wilbert weed fan train.
the other thing i am aware of is her involvement in bare the musical. if you aren’t aware, btm is an adaptation of bare a pop opera, a beautiful musical that explores religion, harmful stereotypes, and young love. btm changed the script in lots of ways that distorted the message bapo strived to show (keep in mind bapo has issues as well, just not necessarily ones we need to talk about right now) and erased mainly important character arcs.
one example is barrett’s character nadia. in bapo, nadia is a plus sized character who plays one of the main protagonists brother and into the stereotype of “strong, not like other girls, tough, fat character” before showing how everyone’s perception of her affects her inner mentality. in btm nadia was changed to a drug dealer? i think? i haven’t seen it, just word of mouth (mostly from @/aromanticromi, the resident bapo expert). anyways she was played by barrett who is not and will not be perceived as a plus sized actress, and thus contributed to the characters fat-erasure.
these are the main things i am aware of. if anyone has any more points or criticism or any other thoughts, please add on! i am sure i’m not the best person to discuss this, and i’d be happy to hear others ideas on the matter.
