congrats on your first year anniversary! can i have a jaehyun x reader fic, unrequited love to lovers au (both as working adults) with the prompt âIâm not jealous.â? Thank you â€ïž
[a/n]: thank you so much and apologies for taking so long with your request! i had a small writer's block for this request and wondered just how exactly should i write this. decided to go with friends-to-lovers instead of unrequited love-to-lovers because it was easier for me to write that. i think i took a different path from what people would usually imagine with the prompts you picked, so i hope all my readers will enjoy this very subtle romance drabble!Â
PAIRING. office worker!jaehyun x female office worker!reader
GENRES. romance, office!au, friends-to-lovers!au, domestic!au
PROMPT. "i'm not jealous"
WORDS. 1047
WARNING. mentions of alcoholic drinks
You and Jaehyun were assigned to cook for a small party. Doyoung got promoted recently and his new position required him to go to your companyâs Singapore office for a period of six months. The only logical thing for you and your friends was, of course, to throw him a party at your place.
A sigh came out of you as you perused your fridge that was luckily stocked with a lot of meat, knowing the boys will surely eat a lot of them. Jaehyun raised an inquisitive brow at you and chuckled.
âIs deciding how much meat we need for tonight something that warrants that big of a sigh?â he asked you kindly.
You shook your head. âNo, actually, I was just thinking about how you, Doyoung, and I joined the company at the same time, and look at him now, promoted and shipped off to the Singapore office.â
âDonât tell me youâre going to miss him,â Jaehyun said with a snort, jokingly.
âHar, har,â you replied. âHeâll be back in six months. What is there to miss?â
âThen why the sigh?â
You gave Jaehyun a small look and closed your fridge. You leaned your whole body against it and then crossed your arms. âPromise you wonât make fun of me?â
He smiled mischievously. âDepends.â
You rolled your eyes and motioned him to follow you to the living room, where you had a small glass cabinet displaying some of your favourite alcoholic beverages: the Hennessy XO cognac your parents had gifted you when you got your position at the company, the Disaronno Originale amaretto you bought for yourself, your favourite moscato white wine from Jacobâs Creek andâ
âHigh Westâs Midwinterâs Night Dram whiskey,â Jaehyun said in admiration when you pulled out the bottle. You handed it to him and he turned the bottle around while whistling lowly. âYou sure know your alcohol. Doesnât a bottle cost about $300? How did you get your hands on this?â
Your eyes bulged out slightly at the price tag. âWait, is it actually $300?â
âI mean, itâs probably one of the least expensive ones if weâre talking about the nice and expensive whiskeys, but definitely one of the best ones out there, in my opinion,â Jaehyun rambled and furrowed his brows. âDonât tell me you bought this without knowing its worth.â
You shrugged one of your shoulders. âBought it? No. But I certainly didnât know its worth when it was gifted to me.â
Jaehyun suddenly went silent, his eyes still on the bottle of whiskey. âWho gave it to you?â
He looked so crestfallen. You resisted the urge to laugh at his demeanour. He looked kind of adorable with his pouty lips, so adorable that you felt like teasing him. But you knew that Jaehyun wouldnât take your teasing too well as he gets embarrassed very easily.
âAn old uni professor gifted it to me, actually,â you revealed with a reminiscing smile, âwhen I told him I got my first permanent job. Who would have thought that six years later, I would still be working there?â
He looked at the bottle again and noticed something odd. âSix years and you never opened it once?â
âNope,â you answered, popping the âpâ. âThis is the part where you promised you wonât make fun of me.â
You looked at him, making sure he wouldnât, and only continued when you got his confirmation, âI told myself I was only going to open this bottle when thereâs something to celebrate, and perhaps with a special someone if that ever happens.â
âA special someone?!â Jaehyunâs voice squeaked and you snorted. He quickly cleared his throat and repeated with a more serious tone, âI mean, a special someone?â
âYes, a special someone,â you replied with a small laugh, emphasizing the word to make fun of him. âMaybe I should open it with Doyoung since he got a promotion.â
Jaehyun scoffed loudly. âDoyoung? Please, why would you open such a precious bottle with Doyoung out of all the people?â
You tilted your head in amusement. âAre we feeling jealous, Mr. Jeong?â
âJealous? Me? Of Doyoung?â Jaehyun rolled his eyes. âIâm not jealous.â
You put the bottle of whiskey back into the glass display cabinet before you two went back to the kitchen to finish cooking. Jaehyun still seemed dispirited from your small conversation about your special bottle of whiskey, for some reason, and he didnât utter a single word while he was cutting up the vegetables.
Jaehyun was the first person you befriended when you joined the company. He was popular with everyone thanks to his kind and caring nature, it was a wonder how he was still single. At first, you only thought of him as a friend, but your feelings slowly started to develop over the years and eventually, you admitted to yourself that you liked him in a romantic way.
You shamelessly used your friendship to your advantage and flirted with him whenever you could, much to Doyoungâs chagrin who had to witness your conversations every day. Not to mention, it didnât help that Jaehyun would also shamelessly flirt back with you too.
However, you two never crossed that line.
Both of you had some issues to work with. Jaehyun had his heart broken by his ex and you had commitment issues. It was hard for the two of you to start a new relationship, but there was no denying that you two had feelings for each other.
Slowly but surely, you two took steps to cross that line together.
You leaned on the counter next to Jaehyun. When he finally noticed that you were not doing anything but staring at him, he grew shy. âW-why are you staring at me? Am I that good-looking?â
âYeah,â you admitted without hesitation. âYouâre very pretty to look at.â
âYou think Iâm pretty?â You nodded and his eyes crinkled. âWell, I think youâre pretty too.â
You hummed in response and rested your chin on your palm. âSay, Jaehyun.â
âYeah?â
âLetâs open that bottle of whiskey together one day.â
Jaehyunâs hands suddenly stopped and his eyes slightly widened at your declaration. When he saw how serious you were, he dropped the cutting knife and his hand then went to your cheek, caressing it in soft circles.
The ability to seduce is oftentimes seen as a gift, a natural-born talent that only a few people possess. However, it is nothing but a sophisticated artform invented by women, using their persuasion and the manâs desire for sex to impose an indirect and psychological, yet very powerful hold on them. In fact, itâs pointless to resist seduction, for people yearn to be part of a mind game, separated from their normal routines, and experiencing the thrill of the unknown. Such everyday life mundanities in Suh Enterprises will never be the same.
- Based on 'The Art of Seduction' by Robert Greene -
Jaehyun - The Beauty
"Never has a woman been in such complete mastery of another's heart."
From early on in life, the Beauty is gazed at by others. Their desire to be looked at is the source of their power, but also the source of much unhappiness: if they are honest with themselves, they also sense that being worshiped only for one's appearance is monotonous and unsatisfyingâand lonely. When their mind and soul are being appreciated, they will grow dependent.
Jungwoo - The Novice
âYou are all soul when you want to be, when you feel it, take me far away from my body.â
What separates Novices from ordinary innocent young people is that they are fatally curious. Finding their innocence a burden, they long to be initiated into the ways of the world. Everyone sees them as so sweet and innocent, but they know this isn't soâthey cannot be as angelic as people think them.
Mark - The New Prude
"You are the constant object of my thoughts; my imagination exhausts itself in guessing what you are doing."
A prude is someone who is excessively concerned with appearances, with what society considers appropriate and acceptable behavior. New Prudes are secretly oppressed by their correctness and long to transgress. Once you open them up they may overwhelm you. They are simply asleep, waiting to be awakened.
Yuta - The Rogue
âThough I fear neither God nor devil, when I am in (her) presence I am ready to tremble like a child, and (s)he could make me go through the eye of a needle to throw myself into the fire.â
The Rogues have lived the good life and experienced many pleasures. On the outside, they tend to seem cynical and jaded, but their worldliness often hides a sentimentality that they have struggled to repress. They have tamped down their own romantic tendencies for so long that when it bursts forth, they lose control.
Doyoung - The Professor
âIt is the first time in my life such a thing has happened to me. I have made up my mind, so long as you are here, to do all you wish. My fancy for you is, after all, only a passing madness."
The Professors' minds are overdeveloped and overstimulated. Even when they talk about love or sex, it is with great thought and analysis. Underneath their intellectual strength lie gnawing insecurities; deep down they long to be overwhelmed by someone with a physical presence. They would like to escape their mental prisons, they would like pure physicality.
Taeil - The Crushed Star
"Late in the night we enjoy a misty moon. There is nothing misty about the bond between us."
The problem with Crushed Stars is that at one point in their lives they did find themselves the center of attention, yet those days are gone. They suddenly receive some attention in a social setting, and it makes them glow; a little wine in the system, and they become effervescent. The reward of seducing Crushed Stars is the powerful emotions that are stirred up.
Taeyong - The Sensualist
âThe cultivation of the pleasures of the senses was ever my principal aim in life.â
What marks the Sensualists is not their love of pleasure but their overactive senses. Sometimes they show this quality in their appearance, but sometimes it is more subtle: because they are so sensitive, they are often quite shy, and they will shrink from standing out or being flamboyant. What the Sensualist lacks is precisely enough sensual experiences to appreciate and relish.
Haechan - The Aging Baby
"The most attractive women, are women full of maternal love.â
Some people refuse to grow up. Perhaps they are afraid of death or of growing old; perhaps they are passionately attached to the life they led as children. Disliking responsibility, they struggle to turn everything into play and recreation. The Aging Baby does not want competition, but an adult.
Johnny - The Lonely Leader
âLove brings to light a lover's noble and hidden qualitiesâ his rare and exceptional traits: it is thus liable to be deceptive as to his normal character.â
Powerful people are treated differently, and this has a big effect on their personalities: everyone around them tends to be fawning and courtierlike, to have an angle, to want something from them. This makes them suspicious and distrustful, but do not mistake the appearance for the reality: Lonely Leaders long to be seduced, to have someone break through their isolation and overwhelm them. Succeed and great power can be gained in turn, for in their loneliness they will come to fall dependent.

This is my 1st yandere since a year ago so, I hope it's good enough as an intro. Thanks for reading.
The library was as low noisy as usual with the constant typing of the college people, the books being open and closed and the not completely muted conversations flying here and there.
You felt a little disappointed when you started you major because all the tv shows and movies and books always talked as if college in general - but especially the library - where a magic land in which everyone was a coming of an age movie character with a shit ton of life changing experiences happening every day, when in reality it was more like an endless ocean of stress and loss of hopes. Or so you thought until you met the new librarian of this semester.
It was common knowledge that apart from the unfair amount of money that the school demanded from its students it also asked for a certain amount of unpaid working hours from them, and the library was often reserved for the seniors mainly for the ones that were researching for their degree paper, and this year senior was beyond perfect.
He looked like the classic second lead from a drama, the one thatâs the best friend and you always ask how is not the chosen one at the end, you would choose him for certain.
The first time you went there you actually needed the book you borrowed, but after his shy smiles and his awkwardness that showed how he was barely getting used to the computer system you started to create excuses to borrow new books every week.
âwow, you must be really smart! Are you from a language directed major? I donât remember having used so many books in a single month everâ It was as if he just snapped his fingers on your face, you got caught, you were nervous, you were about to run away.
âYou sure know how to make your tuition worth, eh? Whatâs your name?â This new guy, obviously another older college mate, came seemingly out of nowhere and checked you out from head to toe, but he had an aura of annoyance to him, pushing his tongue on his cheek, was he holding his anger? Did you make something wrong?
He looked rather normal, or even a pretty kind of guy, and yet⊠he was scary.
âKi be nice, sheâs just studying, probably a top student like youâ Your librarian wasnât just a dedicated worker, right now he was like a hero handing you back your school id.
But his friend took it before you could, read your name out loud, making it sound like a swear word or something and then throwing it back at you on the receptionist desk.
âRemember our thing tonight, Nunu, or Iâll get madâ He said that one last thing directly looking at your eyes and then left.
Nunu was his name, probably a pet name, but now you have a name!
and a feeling like you just got yourself an enemyâŠ. that didnât make sense at all, but oh well, as long as you didnât meet again everything would go just fine, sometimes people just donât like other people. Nunu and you shared a shy smile and you went to keep on with your life.
A few days later it was, finally, Friday, you had only two more classes and you could be free from the day, your friend and you were eating lunch at the school cafeteria when you saw your librarian from the distance, you couldnât hold your smile and then your friend noticed, looked at him and had an idea. She was a member from the film club of the school and their activities usually had a great attendant of the members of the clubs, some friends - including yourself - and one or two lost students who were killing time till their ride arrived.
So she took your hand and before you could think she dragged you to Nunu.
âHi! How are you? Sorry for interrupting, but weâre from the film club and we wanted to invite you to tonightâs show!â She was so extroverted that appearing to a seniors table filled with tired-looking guys would make no effect on her.
You on the other hand, were slowly dying, still munching you food wishing you werenât there.
âAnd where would it be?â Now you wished he wasnât here, Ki, you kind of enemy seemed so interested that your friend got so excited telling him everything about the event without noticing your color leaving your skin.
One of his friends, a thin, gorgeous looking guy who could easily be a model snorted a laugh and assured you that theyâd be there, now you could collapse on your chair and lose all your appetite
âYou shouldnât have done thatâ
â Why? you like him and⊠the club could use some assistanceâ
Somehow, it felt wrong.
And so, the night arrived, and the movie started. It was an outdoors projection on the green areas of the school, you were on a blanket sat next to your friend, the others were with their friends or couples and there wasnât a sign of the special guests of tonight, which you saw as an opportunity to relax and enjoy the show.
âsorry weâre late, we stopped for a presentâ Said Ki, when you and the other turned around you saw him looking from above, you felt like if this was a threat of some type, but your friend was excited as Nunu and another strong guy placed a cooler in the ground, it was filled with beer.
your friend rewinded the movie and you all watched it again, at some point, when all were relaxed one of the guys from Nunuâs squad came to sit with you. He was nice, all bubbly and easy going, his name was Minhyuk and he introduced all of his friends officially to you, he assured you that Kihyun didnât hate you, personally, he was just having a bad time at the moment and was bad at controlling his temper.
The movie ended up being enjoyable and you all ended a little tipsy, after the film ended you still stayed talking, slowly all ended up going little by little, the first one to leave were Kihyun and Hyunwoo - your librarian - then some of the club crew and the strong guy and the model like guy from Hyunwooâs squad followed, the two youngest friends of him stayed until the beer ran out and then it was only your friend, Minhyuk and you.
Your friend and Minhyuk seemed to had gotten quite closer through the night so you decided to leave first, they gave you the good night and you went to the front part of the school to call for an uber, it was a little scary due to the great abandoned school but, you knew it was a safe place so, forced yourself to wait patiently and ignore that sensation of not being alone
âHey! you going already?â Changkyun, the youngest from the guys was standing behind you, you turned around and smiled, he was a little weird, but cool.
âoh yes, but I thought you left a while agoâ
âyes, but I promised to Kihyun hyung to clean before leavingâ You didnât understood because they actually did that before taking care of all the beer bottles and snacks bags so, for a moment you thought you heard wrong.
âwell, the place itâs clean and Minhyuk and my friend are still there so, you should probably go, itâs lateâ
âYeah, Min has to take care of the other trash bag, but we still have to get rid of the biggest one, itâs not personal thoâ He shrugged with his hands in his pockets, soon you heard steps coming behind your back when you turned again it happened in a fraction of a sec: Jooheon another of the guys, then a bottle of beer, a dry hit, the ground getting really close to you, your vision fading to red and then, total darkness.
Once again thanks for reading, next part will be up soon and that's gonna be way more yandere than this one, sowwy if I was out of touch due to the hiatus I took I'll improve for sure, thanks for your time once again and if you want, I'd love to hear your opinions on my work

Monsta X as the guy from school you have a crush on
(a/n: this is subpar, but also this is what happens when you go for the one guy in your entire major who has a girlfriend. enjoy!)
Shownu
He gives you the boy chin-nod gesture, sitting in his regular seat beside you.
âHow was your weekend?â You ask casually, pretending not to notice his lightly disheveled hair, the ratty old band shirt heâs wearing; you even pretend not to notice itâs a band you like. He shrugs, setting his things down.
âI was staying with my girlfriendâs family at their cabin.â
âOh? That sounds fun,â you dial the enthusiasm all the way up. He sighs.
âThey were asking me when weâre going to get married, have kids, start a family,â he runs a hand through his hair, âI just- sheâs a few years older, you know? I never thought it was a big deal, but thereâs just no way Iâm there yet, I mean Iâm still in university, clearly.â
âRight,â you smirk. Youâve been feigning interest in his girlfriend for months, waiting for a breakup. âSo, what did you do?â
âI excused myself, went for a run. In a blizzard.â He shakes his head. âItâs a wonder I didnât get pneumonia.â
You gape at him, trying not to picture him brooding, running in the cold, cheeks pink.Â
Wonho
Since the classes had been moved online, your communication with Wonho had gone from flirting in hallways to texting every few days, and it had your morale pretty low. You tried to text him during classes, and although it wasnât the same, it was nice to see a smile brighten his features when his phone screen lit up. You had a cat that wandered behind you a lot during classes and liked to settle between the back of your chair and your shoulders.
I like the cat, Wonho texted one morning.
Thanks, but sheâs a little evil
She wants an attitude like yours, he answered quickly, still typing and when you looked at your computer screen, you found him grinning down, his phone out of frame
Minhyuk
Itâs been a few weeks since you and your friend decided you didnât like this guy in your class who was consistently rude, interrupted you every time you spoke, and always had a snarky comment to throw your way. To top it off, he was rarely ever in class, and when he did show, he was entirely disrespectful to the professors. One morning, Minhyuk comes in, takes his seat near the professorâs desk. Even though you sit a bit further off in the room, he joins your conversation.
âMinhyuk, whereâs your little neighbour?â The prof asks, meaning the rude guy. âHe hasnât come to class in a while, is he okay?â
Minhyuk scoffs.
âI donât know, I donât talk to him.â He laughs.
âOh, I just thought, because he sits next to you every class-â
âOh, I donât associate with guys like him.â He glances your way, essentially demonstrating a quiet form of loyalty.
Kihyun
âI hate when the stories are bad,â you roll your eyes.
âThatâs sort of why we workshop them. To better them,â Kihyun smiles. You roll your eyes, leaning in.
âEasier to do when the person can actually fucking write,â you whisper, not wanting the writer of the story youâre looking over to overhear. Kihyun stares at you, jaw hanging open in mock scandal.
âYouâre so mean.â He scolds, looking away. You shrug.
âPlease, I add life to this class,â you giggle. He laughs.
âI think you add life anywhere you go.â
You smile to yourself but move on, until Kihyun gets a shine in his eyes.
âBy the way, I started that book you told me to read. Itâs really good.â
âOh!â You get excited, âhave you met Boris yet?â You ask about your favorite character.
âNot yet, but youâll be the first to know when I do,â he leans in again, biting his lip, and you wonder when you started flirting with him openly.
Hyungwon
Itâs your one evening class of the semester, itâs finally over for the week, so you gather your things and make your way to the metro station.
âHey, wait up,â Hyungwon calls, hurrying to your side. âIâll walk you to the station.â
âYou really donât have to,â you chuckle. You pause to wait for the elevator down to the lobby.
âWell, maybe I want to, how about that?â You pull your car keys out of your bag with a jingle. âDo you need that many keychains?â He laughs. You hold out your set of keys for him and he takes it, looking over every little thing, souvenirs, knick-knacks and all.
âThis is cute,â he holds out a fuzzy little bear, the size of the tip of your pinky finger. The elevator doors open and you step in with a dozen other people from your class.
âYou want it?â
âOh, no itâs yours-â
âI have more than enough, obviously.â
He stares at you for a second, but pulls the bear out of your keychain. He reaches into his pocket to fish out a single key.
âYou donât have a keychain?â You ask.
âI do now,â he grins. You blush and look away to find a classmate watching the both of you with a raised eyebrow.
Jooheon
You sit with some school friends around a table at a bar. Youâre all shouting over each other in the tradition of sharing stories and getting to know each other at the beginning of the semester. Jooheon gives you special attention, something youâve been getting used to over the past couple weeks of classes. Out of nowhere, a strange voice booms over all the others:
âJooheon, man, holy shit!â A guy a few years older than the rest of you leans over you, grabbing Jooheonâs shoulder from across the table and shaking it. âHey, howâs your sister?â
âSheâs good, man, sheâs good,â he flashes his dimples, clearly mildly uncomfortable.
âThatâs good. Man, you grew up, last time I saw you, you were, what, fifteen?â The guy asks, still leaning between you and your other friend. âLast I heard, you got yourself a girlfriend, that right?â He asks. Jooheon bites his lip, giving you a quick, guilty glance.
âUh, yeah. Yeah.â
They chat like this for a minute before the guy disappears again.
âSisterâs ex-boyfriend,â he explains, smiling shyly and seemingly only at you. You nod and everyone returns to their evening.
An hour or so later, the guy reappears.
âJooheon, Iâm headed out, take care of yourself, man. Tell your sister I say hi.â
âSure, sure,â he laughs.Â
Changkyun
You wait for your friends at the bar, spinning lightly on your bench, chatting with the bartender. Itâs a quiet evening, early yet.
âHey, can we get some sangria?â Changkyun asks the bartender as he slides into the seat beside yours.
âYouâre buying me drinks now?â You smirk, looking up from what was a vodka-soda but is now just an empty glass.
âMaybe,â he leans conspiratorially into you, âdonât tell anyone.â He whispers.
âI donât know about anyone, but Iâll make sure not to tell your girlfriend,â you challenge.
âRight,â he leans back quickly. âYeah, especially donât tell her.â
Homewrecker, your mind shouts. Your mind can go to hell for tonight.Â
ah yes, one of the favorite tropes in fanfic and i did not do it justice at all lmao. truthfully i was really excited about this, but the fic took a left somewhere and grew its own mind or smth. i think the poor writing is a combination of burnout and getting really distracted lmao.
tried to make kihyun the savage guy that he is, but still polite and considerate and i think i did that???? question mark???? please tell me what you thought about this lmao, i've never been to a high school reunion (except for my grandma's) and will never go to one anytime soon.

âAct natural,â you say as you smooth down the lapels of your friendâs coat, dust some lint off the shoulders. âLike, just act like normal. We just have to say hi to a few people and then go after an hour or something.â
Kihyun is looking you over as well, straightening out the sleeves of your shirt and making sure your hair is nice and styled and perfect. âIâm taking that as a go signal to tease you in front of everyone then, gotcha.â
You roll your eyes and take his hand, tugging him towards the glass door of the events hall. âVery funny, but you know what? These people might buy it even more, so go ahead.â
He intertwines your fingers as he pushes the door open for you. Thereâs a smirk on his face that says youâre going to regret what you just said. âIf you say so," he says, as you pull him along with you.
Everything is decorated like a senior prom from the early 2000s--balloons everywhere, streamers hung up on the walls, a disco ball suspended in the middle of the room. There's a stage set up at the far wall, and popular tracks from your high school days play softly on the sound system. People are already mingling, table hopping when they see a familiar face.
You go to the small registration booth off to the side, Kihyun in tow, and sign on the space next to your name, walking away quickly to find a table. It's easy to weave through the thin crowd to your spot, and thankfully no one goes up to talk to you as you settle in.
A relieved sigh escapes your lips as you deflate against the seat; Kihyun chuckles at the sight.
"Why are you so nervous? You were so confident when you asked me out,â he says, smirking at your flustered state.
âHey,â you counter, sitting up straight and pointing at him. Thereâs a smile of embarrassment threatening to crawl up your face, but you force it down. âThis isnât a date. I didnât ask you outâI respectfully asked if you could come with me to my high school reunion and pretend weâre dating. Thereâs a difference.â
He tilts his head and laughs. âOkay, fine, this isnât a date. But youâre shaking like a hamster, dude. Whatâs got you so jittery?â
Before you can open your mouth to say something smart, a yell of your name behind you makes you stop. Suddenly a flurry of pink silk ruffles envelops you, cold metal bracelets press against your face and neck, and a tinnitus-inducing squeal is blasted in your ear.
âOMG, I canât believe you made it!â The offending classmate plops down the seat beside you and⊠you canât say you remember her. You know you have a questionable memory, but you canât recall anyone with a scarily-toothy smile and long acrylic nails. âI was wondering if you were gonna show today, I missed you!â
You smile warily. âYeah, I thought Iâd stop by, just for a biâ,â
âAnd who is this with you?â she interrupts, gaze fixed on your friend now.
Kihyun still has a polite smile on, eyebrow raised and patiently waiting for you to introduce him. You meet his eyes and take a steadying breath.
âThis is, uh. Kihyun. My boyfriend.â
Your batchmate immediately extends a hand out to him. âHi there! Iâm Danhee. Itâs very nice to meet you.â
Kihyun grasps her hand and shakes it firmly. âLikewise.â
Danhee (apparently, thatâs her name. Still doesnât ring a bell.) turns back to you, props an elbow on the table and rests her chin on her hand. âSo what have you been up to lately?â
âOh, you know, nothing much,â you say, twiddling your thumbs under the table. âWorkâs keeping me busy, mostly. Itâs prettyâ,â
âGreat! Howâd you two meet?â Her eyes are sparkling, in that menacing way youâre familiar with when someone is hunting for gossip. âProbably work, right? I know Y/N isnât that outgoing so I doubtâ,â
âYou know what, Iâm gonna go get a drink.â You turn to Kihyun, desperate to get away. âYou want a drink, Kihyun? Cool, Iâll get you something.â The chair screeches as you push away from the table and make a beeline for the buffet.
The air conditioning helps cool down your flaming face as you leave to get some reprieve from the suffocating air of the table. No matter how much you wrack your brain you canât seem to remember anyone named Danhee; maybe she was in another class and part of the popular clique, a group you tended to stay away from.
You take a deep breath, surveying the array of finger food and wonder briefly what the main dishes are. The arrangement is no different from the ones youâve seen at company partiesâsave maybe for the small picket signs that have slang from your high school days speared into some of the food. Despite looking delicious, you feel nauseous at the thought of taking a bite.
The drinks corner offers coffee, the kind that tries to pass off as Americano but ends up tasting more like candy because people keep putting too much sugar in it. Itâs what you and Kihyun call âconference coffeeâ and shit on for the entirety of the conference youâre attending, even as you keep drinking it because thereâs usually no other choice. Water is an option, as well as a fruit punch of some kind. If youâre being honest, youâd really like a beer right now, but you know the alcohol wonât come out until later.
In addition to the mound of paperwork you forced yourself to finish earlier, this week has just been plain exhausting. Youâd hoped that coming to the reunion would help you relax, but apparently not.
Ice cubes clink as they go down the tall glasses. The coffee, however sugary it turns out to be, still smells heavenly and wakes you up some. You water both servings down a bit, if only to tamp down the syrupy sweetness.
âHey,â a familiar voice says, hand coming down to rest on your shoulder. Kihyun moves into your line of vision, brows slightly scrunched. âYou okay there?â
You donât answer, thinking of words to say that wonât make you look pathetic in front of your work partner. Youâre usually great at explaining and justifying your actions to your superiors, but words fail you this time.
So you just shrug and hand him his drink. âCanât say for sure.â You take a sip and cringe; your mouth feels like itâs coated in a thick layer of sugar. Kihyun watches you and decides wisely to put his drink down, but pours two glasses of water.
âDo you know her?â he asks, concentrating on the drinks.
âDanhee? Nah. I mostly avoided her type back then. Being around them made me uncomfy.â
ââCuz she looks like a part of the Plastics from Mean Girls?â
You scoff. âNo,â you say, but smile all the same as you walk back to your table. âBecause I was a loner and operated on the mindset of âIâm not like other girlsâ throughout high school.â
Kihyun laughs loud. âGod, I didnât think you were the type.â
âUnfortunately, yeah.â You sigh as you sit back down. âThankfully outgrew that in college, though. Turns out being surrounded with a lot of open-minded people does something to your personality, and,â you open your arms, presenting yourself to Kihyunâs amused smile. âNow you have me, your beloved hardworking partner that throws snark at you everyday.â
If anything, his grin gets wider. Kihyun raises his glass of water, and you toast. âIâm proud of you for becoming so mature.â He takes a drink, making faces like heâs downing whiskey instead of regular water. âAlthough, apparently not mature enough to just ask me out plain and simple.â
You want to strangle him, you really do.
Heâs right, though. Part of the reason why you invited him as your plus one is for moral support and to show people that the wallflower can also nab a man as great as Kihyun. But the other reason is that youâve wanted to ask Kihyun on a date, but just didnât know how to without embarrassing yourself.
You sigh and take a swig of your water. âYeah, well, can you blame me, though? We always keep professional at work and I barely see you outside the building, so I havenât really gotten a chance to ask.â Youâre not lyingâKihyun being here is only possible because you left the building at the same time last week and asked him then before you chickened out.
He tilts his head in assent and takes another sip before crossing his arms on the table to whisper at you. âHow about we make this a date, then?â
You raise an eyebrow, smiling like you canât believe he suggested such a ridiculous thing. âWhatâhere? My high school reunion that I only invited you to because I didnât want to be alone?â
And maybe itâs the trick of the light, but you think you see his eyes go soft. âWell, yeah. I mean, itâs not ideal, but weâre here anyway. Thereâs free food, shitty coffee, and some entertainment.â He tilts his head to the stage, and you follow his gaze to where a couple of your batchmates are discussing something, mics in their hands. âWhether itâs the good kind of entertainment or the cringy kind though, weâll find out soon,â you hear him whisper.
In theory, you have nothing to lose. Nothing really to hide. Perhaps the worst part of the night passed when you had that panicked moment with Danhee earlier, and all thatâs left is to enjoy the night. You can still leave in an hour or two like you planned, but now with a higher chance of getting a few drinks afterwards, too.
So you make your decision and look back at him. âAll right, Yoo Kihyun,â you say. âYouâve got yourself a date.â
His smile morphs into a smirk, the trademark confident grin making a small shudder run down your spine. You try to keep your composure as he slides a hand to your thigh. âPerfect. Wanna bet youâll last an hour before you want to leave?â His fingers are massaging your knee, soft hands gentle on the meat of your thigh.
You scoff, grabbing at his hand to make him stop. âDeal. Iâll bet you an hour and a half.â
And before you turn your attention back to the stage, you see his smirk again, excited for the challenge.

âIâm so sorry,â you apologized quickly, turning to the person, a very attractive man with flawless skin and adorable brown eyes. You couldnât help but show a small smile as he refused your apology.
âNo, Iâm sorry. I just needed some creamer.â
His hand hovers over the small of your back as he reaches around you for the creamer. Your heart races slightly with him in such close proximity but you try not to show it. When he finishes with it he gives you a quick smile and walks towards a small two-seater table close to the door. You try to calm the thumping in your chest as you stir your drink and take a seat at a two-seater on the opposite side of the store. You pull out your phone to catch up with your friendsâs endeavors on your social media. It goes on like this for about ten minutes before the bell above the door rings, naturally drawing your attention to the sudden sound. A man with dark hair, probably in his early thirties, strolls in and goes to the counter to order. You donât think much of him until you notice that the attractive guy from earlier is staring at the man, and his expression was definitely not as warm as it was when he looked at you less than twenty minutes ago. You wondered if something interesting was about to happen. Were they two guys fighting over a girl? Was a potential fight about to break out? You shook your head. Donât be silly, you thought to yourself.
That night you had the news playing in the background as you cooked your dinner. You were pouring yourself a glass of water when something the anchor said caught your attention. You pressed the volume up button on your remote a couple times to catch what he was saying.
ââearlier today. The local police have investigated the manâs home and concluded that there was foul play. However, no suspects have been found at the moment. If you have any further information on this case we encourage you to call the number at the bottom of your screen. Next, we have-â
So as the door shut behind him you made the quick decision to stand from your table and leave after him, keeping somewhat of a distance. Though that proved to be useless when he rounded a corner and as you rounded it just a few seconds after him, you bumped into someone. Him.
âYou know I donât appreciate being followed. If you wanted my number or something you couldâve just asked.â
He smirked down at you, making a shiver run down your spine. Suddenly your tongue was dry, and you didnât know if you could speak.
âCat got your tongue? Itâs okay. Iâm Shownu,â he outstretched his hand and raised a brow when you didnât retaliate, âThis is the part where you tell me your name and shake your hand.â
âI didnât follow you for your number,â your voice trembled. His hand fell slowly down to his side as he looked at you inquisitively.
âOkay? Why were you following me then?â
âBecause . . . I- I was watching the news the other night, and-â
His expression swiftly turned dark before he straightened up and the muscles in his jaw clenched. Suddenly he wasnât the same warm persona he had been showing you. You got nervous.
âLook,â he cut you off, âI donât know what youâre talking about, and honestly I donât think you even know what youâre talking about. So, why donât we go our separate ways, and you wonât have to see me again, got it?â
He turned to walk away from you, and by some grace of God you managed to squeak out, âThen Iâll go to the police! Theyâll find you, and if youâre guilty, youâll get the justice you deserve.â
If looks could kill, you would have been seventeen types of dead right then and there. You swallowed the thickness in your throat before he responded, âI wouldnât do that if I were you.â
âYeah? Why not?â
You got silence as an answer before he turned on his heel and continued to walk down the sidewalk, rounding another corner and out of your vision. You were left alone on the sidewalk, the sounds of passing cars and leaves and loose newspaper rustling along the concrete deafening. Goosebumps erupted all over your body as you replayed his last words to you over and over. If you thought you wouldnât get sleep a few nights ago then you definitely werenât sleeping today.
