It cracks me up when someone goes on about how AI poses an existential threat to humans, when the biggest and most immediate existential threat to humans is humans. We have spent the last several hundred years since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution on an overarching project to take down not only ourselves but literally every other living thing on the planet. I don’t think we need to be afraid of the thinking rocks gaining sentience and exterminating us. We’re doing the job quite well ourselves.
Rather than being trained by a commune of consenting minds, AI was trained by the colonizer using the colonizer’s traditional tactics. The technocratic billionaires feel entitled to help themselves to anyone else’s intellectual property for their own betterment, all the while piously claiming that their depredations are for the betterment of humanity. It’s the same mindset that informed Manifest Destiny.
