you can install a light weight linux distro (like Arch) (for free) on a lot off older laptops to make them up to speed with newer computers. The issue isn’t the speed of the hardware, it’s the size and power needed for the software

my main laptop (the one I’m typing this out on right now) is 15 years old, and I still use it for all sorts of modern uses. Even if you just want to set it up as a light-night/ early-morning media center, it’s still great.

vlc can do all sorts of shit if you have an optical port. you can even make new dvd’s and cd’s

make the most of the hardware you have on hand, chances are that it’s better than you think
